The Haunting (1999 version)

What do you guys think about 1999 remake of the Haunting? Is this DVD worth purchasing, the DTS version?

The sound design is about the only redeeming quality.

Yup, the DTS-ES sound was the only good thing about it. I found one in one of the bins at Best Buy for $6.99. I'm quite sure it was a mistake becuaser the rest were just the 5.1 version. So if you can find it for well under $9.99, then I would recommend it.

Aside from the admittedly cool surround sound, the production design, and Catherine Zeta-Jones ( ), this is one of the worst horror movies in recent memory. :flush: Skip it.

The D-VHS edition is the only way to experience "THE HAUNTING."
Its HD picture and engaging soundtrack is "reference quality" all
the way! The DVD is okay at best with a picture that's often
soft and muted in color spectrum. So far as the DTS soundtrack
is concerned, sure it sounds terrific but the D-VHS version blows
it out of the park. It has a far better low-end and a much more
realistic atmospheric tone. In short, the D-VHS edition is better
in every respect.

Sad that Lili Taylor is pushed to the side on that cover when she's the one the story is focused around.

Sorry Cherno, but I'd have to say you're right. This movie stunk. I wanted very much to like it, and I thought many aspects of it were good (decently acted, great effects, good mood), but it just let me down so bad. I guess it must be poor scriptwriting or something, I'm no expert on what makes a movie lousy. And I can't say I'm such a DVD fan to buy something just because I can show off a sound system or TV, so I'd say negative on this one.

I love the original and didn't think this was SO bad, but the second half is a big let down.

They would have done well to leave the supposed lesbian Catherine Zeta Jones character's scene in.

GREAT sound though, and still the only reason I woudpick it up if I ever saw it cheap enough.

Supposed lesbian scene??? What the hell are you talking about??? Lesbian scenes always make crappy movies better, or at least some what redeemable.

Didn't do much for Monster. It wasn't completly a crappy movie but because of the makeup it was certainly the least erotic lesbian scene I had ever scene in my life.

Are you comparing the dts-es discrete audio on the DVD to the DD audio on the D-VHS release or did the D-VHS release also have a dts audio track?

Does anyone know the bitrate on the dts audio on the DVD release? I believe the DD bitrate on D-VHS is 640 kbps.

Peace...

Well no bit rate notes but DVDFile.com did do a review for the HD-VHS version of the movie and compared it to the other dvd releases. Overall they thought the DTS-ES DVD version was the better for the sound.

I have so much fun at Best Buy sometimes...

Gomez and I went there last night after dinner, just to look around. I saw the 2-pack of The Haunting/What Lies Beneath for like $15. It was *not* the DTS version.

A Best Buy drone was restocking "Closer" about 4 feet away.

I said, "I'm gonna check out the Horror section to see if they have the DTS version for cheap. Everyone says it's a crappy movie but for oh, 8 or 9 bucks it's worth it to me to see Catherine Zeta-Jones in her tall boots and short skirt changing her blouse. RrrrRRRR."

I thought the guy was gonna get whiplash AND fall over, he turned to look at me so fast.

They had it. I bought it.

Tomdkat, the DTS soundtrack on the DVD doesn't have as much of an "open" feeling as on the D-VHS DD track. Don't get me wrong the DVD sounds terrific but there is an element of mild compression revealed when performing a direct comparison. I have found this to be true of many DVD-DTS tracks after a side by side comparison with D-VHS.
When a D-VHS transfer offers a DTS track the DVD doesn't stand a chance!

Do you mean IF this ever happens or do you mean on the occasion that a D-VHS titles does come with a dts track? I thought D-VHS only had DD audio currently.

Peace...

Tomdkat, there a several DTS, D-VHS titles available (TRUE LIES, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, I ROBOT, & ALIEN: DIRECTOR'S CUT to list a few). DD bit rates on DVD's as compared to D-VHS aren't even in the same league. I have yet to hear a DD track on DVD that even comes close to a D-VHS edition. DTS on D-VHS blows away DTS on DVD. Take a listen and I'm sure that you'll agree. Let's hope that the audio tracks on upcoming HD-DVD replicate what is already "reference quality" on D-VHS. Fingers are crossed...
