Million Dollar Baby

Well, WB hasn't officially announced it yet, but DavisDVD has black and white cover art up for three editions, and we can gleam some insight into how it'll be released by them. They're pulling a Mystic River.

Quote:
Still no official disc details for Clint Eastwood's Oscar-winning Million Dollar Baby from Warner Home Video, but we do have this black & white look at cover artwork. It looks like the film will be available in separate anamorphic widescreen and fullscreen editions, as well as a three-disc "Deluxe Edition" featuring exclusive bonus materials and a CD soundtrack (like Mystic River). Current word is a July 12th release date. Stay tuned for more soon.
Here we go again.

Fucking WB... I have never once listened to Eastwood's coma-inducing score to Mystic River after buying the 3-disc set, and his music to M$B is equally mediocre. I'm only buying the 1-disc. Warners should be ashamed of themselves!

Well hopefully everything time wise will work out nicely. I might get the Deluxe Edition of the film if i time it with the next DDD.com 20% off sale. Did that with Mystic River DE. . . . hopefully all 3 discs will be included.

Why? You don't want the soundtrack, so you're buying the standard edition. Why be mad?

I bought the 3-Disc Collector's Edition of Mystic River because I wanted the Features, I didn't even touch the Soundtrack.

I also got it for the Standard Edition price, Best Buy made a mistake pricing it. :flush:

Because I shouldn't be forced to buy a soundtrack CD I'll never listen to in order to have the extras! Spielberg pulled the same shit with the Terminal DVD, and I'd already bought John Williams' score months earlier. This trend has to be discouraged.

Bit like the Lemony Snicket box - why include the first book of a series that the film is based on and sell to an audience that is likely buying the set because they like the film and have already read/own the book??

I gotcha, I actually just bitched about something similar elsewere. Sorry, I was thinking you were complaining about something different.

I rarely watch extras and I just buy the standard edtions, but releasing a standard edition and an uber-edition at the same time does suck. It's allowed them to charge out the ass for something we used to get for cheaper. Look at this week's releases... a stacked Blade Eternity 2-disc set for $14.99, but if you want the features for Lemony Snickett, you have to buy the "collector's version" which costs $30.

I actually wouldn't mind the trend if the movie only editions were about $10 when they came out and the extras version was $20. I like the idea of choosing which movies to pay for extras on, I just think the pricing is off.

The Lemony Snicket SE pricing bugs me too. I mean, I can see pricing a packed-to-the-gills three-disc SE like Black Hawk Down and Panic Room at $30, but no 2-disc set should retail for that price, especially if the extra cost is due to stuff that most discriminating fans of the film either already have (the first Snicket book) or don't want (the boring-ass M$B soundtrack CD). It's extortion, plain and simple, and unless consumers protest this practice by keeping their wallets shut, it's just going to get worse. M$B was one of my top-20 movies last year, and I was eager to see it again, but following WB's greedy move, fuck it. I'll jst wait until the single-disc release is selling for $10 about six months for now. Hell, the Mystic River extras were no great shakes, and having to shell out an additional ten bucks for them really ticked me off.

What's bad about this is that with Mystic River, they intentionally witheld extras from the first disc to try to get you to buy the deluxe version. The single-disc MR lacks the commentary in the 3-disc version, so this is not like when a studio reissues a 2-disc version without the second disc, since any extras that were on the first disc are still there in that case. It wouldn't have cost them any more to manufacture the single-disc MR if it had the commentary, although I don't know if royalties come into play or not. Also, since it contains a soundtrack CD, it is priced higher compared to other 3-disc non-Criterion sets (because CD's are overpriced compared to DVDs).

I don't know if Eastwood or anyone else is doing a commentary, but it seems you'll have to buy the deluxe version to hear it.

I think they're doing this to make what is advertised as a "3-disc version" sound like more than it really is, and to push sales of a CD many people wouldn't buy if they didn't have to to get the extras.

Yeah, I already told Jack I misunderstood in case you missed it. I thought he meant there was a version with the soundtrack and a version without, extras having nothing to do with it.

See my above post... I agree with you

Okay, now I see.

Now that I think about it, it may actually cost them MORE to produce different versions of the disc with the movie, as they would have to author two different masters, with two different menus, two different numbers of audio streams, and possibly different artwork for the two discs. I have heard that menus can be costly to have produced, but I don't know if the company that does it charges them twice as much because it can be the same menu but without the link for "special features" or not. Has anyone seen both menus for the Mystic River versions, and if so, are they completely different or not?

Then again, I guess they decide it's worth it, since they can presumably sell more copies of the deluxe version than they would have if they didn't withold the extras.

looks like it may not be as bad as first thought. turns out it is a 2 disc release and a 3 disc release (with soundtrack cd). still no details on the extras but at least we won't be mystic rivered again.

If it's a 2-disc instead of a 1-disc, then it might work out for us extras whores. But if it mirrors the Mystic River releases, then just like that movie, this one will not be bought either. Here's another problem with this Warner/Eastwood practice. I do not remember the deluxe set being on sale and if it was, not for very long.

Exellent news; I'll be pickng up the 2-disc release. Eastwood's score was good, but not exceptional, and not something I need to have, especially when this is coming mere days before Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, so money will be needed for that.

In that post he still says the three disc will have "a bonus disc plus the CD soundtrack," so I guess it still might have more features. Anyone not happy with two baffles me though, so there should be no room for complaint. And it could be he wrote it wrong and the soundtrack is the only bonus.

I think the soundtrack is the only bonus; the cover clearly states that the Deluxe is 3-Disc, not four. For there to be additional video suppliments on the Deluxe, there would almost have to be a fourth disc in addition to the soundtrack because I'm guessing that WB will want to press idenical discs for Discs 1 and 2 of the deluxe set and the 2-disc by itself. So, I think it is just written wrong and the 3-disc bonus is the soundtrack alone. Which is fine with me; 2-disc for me in that case.

I guess that confirms there are no extra features on the 3-disc... That makes the 2-disc the one to get for me, unless the packaging for the 3-disc is uber-cool, which I doubt.

Digital Bits posted revised cover art for the 2-disc edition yesterday; it now notes the Oscar wins, which I was suprised it didn't before (the 3-disc did, but not the 2-disc.) Now both do. Other than that, the artwork is the same as before, and it's really not too intrusive; the cover art for something like Big Fish (which didn't even win half the awards they mentioned on it) or Chicago is much worse.

Definately getting the 2-disc version.

The HK special edition Region 3 has a few more things than the US version.
2 discs, (no soundtrack cd), English DTS, and a 20 minute EPK with behind the scenes footage
are included, in addition to the extras on the US disc.

It seems to be the only version out there with one extra featurette.

Gave it a rent the day it came out.
Am I the only one that practically hated this movie? I havent been that bored since I watched The English Patient.
It is exactly the kind of thing that the Academy gushes over. I didn't think that any of the performances were memorable, and Swank in particular had no business being up for Best Actress. It was just standard Swank. I thought she gave a better performance in The Core and The Gift. Thats not a slam against either of those films or MDB. I just thought her work in The Gift and The Core was more layered...seriously.

Everyone was a one dimensional character. Most of the people in the movie were there to serve one purpose and to move the story along to the next point where the next one-dimensional character did their thing.

On one level it is a beautiful, simply directed, moving story. On the other hand its slow moving, self indulgent and boring.

What do you all think of the mother/family characters and the 'all heart' wannabe boxer who gave Morgan a glimmer of hope in his sad life at just the right time ?
