What are some good purchases?

I know there's a topic really similar to this, so I'm sorry to everyone who's sick of this stuff...

I've only had a DVD player for a few months, and I have a fairly decent collection... so far I have:

American Beauty

Beastie Boys: DVD Anthology
Do the Right Thing: Criterion Edition

Fargo
Fight Club

L.A. Confidential
The Matrix

Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition
This is Spinal Tap

The Usual Suspects

What are some great discs that I should add to my collection? I really dislike big action movies in general, although I have The Matrix and T2 (which are both excellent DVDs), I rarely watch either... also, I'm only 16, so a lot of the older flicks seem kinda dated to me (although I loved Taxi Driver and Chinatown...)... any recommendations? Sorry guys, I know this is played out, but I really would like to expand my collection, and your advice would be much appreciated!

I hope this helps:

Frequency- kinda a Sci-Fi flick but kinda a drama very well worth the money

Ghost-from 1990 (if that's old to you)but a very good film, a bit of evrything , comedy action, some romance, no real horror though

What is old to you, like pre 1990 or pre 1985 or earler? That would help quite a bit.

Heh heh... pre-1980, generally... I'm not saying I can't/won't enjoy older films, but some films just don't appeal to people who didn't grow up with them (an example, I didn't think there was anything special about Superman, probably because I saw it for the first time in 1995...)...

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll check both those flicks out...

Hmmm, I'm only 17, and i can enjoy movies regardless of when they were released. I didn't grow up with the Star Wars Trilogy, but when i first saw it in 1995, i really enjoyed it. As for Superman, i guess its all a matter of taste, i happened to love the movie when i was younger, but only now truly appreciate the many aspects that make this movie what it is.

Anyways, i guess i can't really reccomend anything, as the best way to expand your collection is to buy movies that you truly enjoy. I've blindly purchased movies in the past, and some have been duds, others not. Just assuming you have a limited income as i do, try only buying things you know for sure that you will enjoy, or at least rent before you buy.

You should rent The Spanish Prisoner. It's a great movie and a good DVD, but not a great DVD. I won't tell you anything about the movie, but you might like it.

You should also rent Deep Cover and see if you like that.

If you like intense drama, check out The Insider. This is really intense (at least to me).

Here are some other titles you might want to rent first:

Ricochet
Men of Honor
The Shawshank Redemption*
The Hand that Rocks the Cradle
Wall Street
Boiler Room
Love Jones
The Bone Collector
Disclosure*
The Game*
A Perfect Murder

* = I would say buy this title NOW, but you should see if you like it first.....

The Game is directed by David Fincher who also directed Fight Club. You can ask Eye what he thinks about The Game.

I'll post more when I have time.

Peace.....

Awesome! Thank you very, VERY much... I'll check out each and every one of those films (the ones I haven't seen, at least).

I can't believe no one mentioned SE7EN?!?! It is probably one of my favorite DVDS and was directed by Fincher. This is definitely one you want to buy.

I had considered Se7en, but someone told me that it was ultra depressing and just not an enjoyable movie at all... I haven't actually seen it though, I should probably check it out for myself.

Definitely check out Seven for yourself. I'm 15 (16 in 15 days) and I liked it. The only person I know who thought it was depressing was my Dad. Yeah, as if he's someone you would want to take advice from.

Also, I don't think your age matters. I think age only affects how interested in a movie you are. At 16 I think you would be more interested to see Fight Club than Citizen Kane or The Third Man. With old movies you often have to force yourself to watch them. It can pay off though. For example, I never thought I would like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, a movie made in 1939, but one night I watched it and now it's my favorite movie of all time.

Anyway, if you like The Matrix I would recommend Bound. It was made by the Wachowski brothers who wrote and directed The Matrix. I think it's far more superior to The Matrix. Braveheart robbed it at the Oscars, too.

If you don't like The Matrix you may still want to check out Bound if you like, Mafia movies, The Sopranos, Hitchcock movies, lesbians , or Gina Gershon .

Hey, wassup. I'm only 17, and have just begun collecting dvd's as well. I have only about 20 discs, but It seems like u and I share the same taste in movies (I have American Beauty Beastie Boys: DVD Anthology Do the Right Thing: Criterion Edition Fight Club Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition), so hopefully some of the suggestions I give will be helpfull.

If you liked Taxi Driver, then I would definetly reccomend the dvd. It has a fantastic set of supplements, including a 70 minute (wow) documentary on the making of the film and much more. As well, It may be well worth your while to take a look at the new edition of Rocky. While it may be somewhat old (76') the new transfer and set of supplements is great. I particulary like the 28 minute sylvester stallone video commentary, he is a lot more articulate and funny than many people may think, and it is great to see all the emotion as he reminsces on his big break. Hope I could be of help

P.S. -How do you like that copy of Do The Right Thing? I just picked it up this week and I can't stop going through the supplements, every one is so good and there is so much stuff.

I didn't realize that Taxi Driver had that documentary, do you think it's worth buying?

I liked Rocky, mayhaps the DVD would be a good buy...

Oh, and I LOVE Do The Right Thing. I find that with some movies, the extras are sorta boring... I love commentaries, publicity material, and featurettes, but generally I don't bother with storyboards, or any of the technical stuff. But the Do The Right Thing DVD has all really practical extras... they're far more interesting (and plentiful) than the extras on most DVDs, I feel...

I'll check out both Se7en and Bound... thanks again to everyone who helped! Oh, and it's good to see some people my own age on here...

It's great to see so many "younger" people interested in all kinds of movies here on this board!

Although I could list you a ton of movies I'd like to recommend, I think all the other people gave you already a big list of great titles for you to check out. Don't want to overwhelm you with titles

So here's just one - Devil's Advocate.

Ditto for what Dom said, but here are a few titles I'd like to add because they are really interesting films packaged with great supplements. A rental is probably still a good thing, but it will take time to get through them especially...

...BRAZIL. This Criterion Collection release has three complete DVD's. If you've seen and enjoyed othere Gilliam films (12 MONKEYS or TIME BANDITS in particular), you will probably flip for this disc.

HALLOWEEN from Anchor Bay. Your tastes may run to Horror, but AB's treatment of this classic is a must (alternate horror choice: Pioneer's TEXAS CHAINSWAW MASSACRE special edition, one of the liveliest commentaries ever.)

and one more...DANCER IN THE DARK from New Line Platinum series. Pretty-loaded edition, and a controversial film. Rent it first, but I guarantee it will be an experience.

I would like to say that while I consider many Gilliam films to be up on my favorites lists (ie. Time Bandits, 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loatghing In Las Vegas) that Brazil did absolutely nothing for me. It is pretty boring in fact. One question though: Is the Time Bandits Criterion worth buying?

Also I would have to disagree that SE7En is depressing. Although it does contain many instances of murder and pyschopathic behaviour it is still a great film. It might not be uplifting or anything like that but it is still brilliant. Check this movie out! You will not be disappointed.

One more thing, I am also 17 (almost 18) and I share a fairly similar taste in movies and a love of DVD. I would recommend checking out Evil Dead 2 (and then Evil Dead and Army of Darkness). It is a great comedy horror movie and a true classic.

I second indiephantom's recommendation of Criterion Brazil: even though the price is a little steep, it's worth it.

My own recommendation: Criterion Seven Samurai. Oh yes.
