DVD vending machines!

From IMDB

Quote:
Coming: Movie Gallery in a Box
Movie Gallery, the nation's No. 2 DVD rental chain behind Blockbuster, said Friday that it is likely to roll out large numbers of DVD vending machines over the coming months but that it has yet to decide on a manufacturer. Movie Gallery exec Thomas Johnson told Home Media Retailing magazine that the machines "let us go into markets that are smaller than we need for a store and into areas where we may not be able to get real estate." He indicated that logical locations for the machines would include grocery and convenience stores.

It does seem to have new releases. I believe it said $1 rentals and no late fees. I may attempt it as I hear more first hand.

PS It did have some older titles, but not real old.

How does it work? Do you have to swipe a membership card or something?

Credit card. I don't know all the details. Next time I go, I'll take a better look.

As I haven't seen one of these yet I did hear about them and actuall saw an add somewhere on the internet about "starting your own business" with these machines. I am curious to how the returns work, I mean you can't make money on product thats not being brought back.

I get pissed when a snack vending machine takes my $.60 and the snack gets stuck and I am screwed. I wouldn't want to even try with a $20 dvd purchase. And those Vending machines will probably seel at MSRP prices meaning WAY above normal than going to well, just about any other store.

When I consider the possible screw-ups associated with this type of rental system I get chills.

The case comes out but no DVD inside. Now you'll have to phone a number or find the manager of the store and explain what happened. Then the question becomes "maybe you removed it from the case?"

You get home and it's doesn’t work or it's covered in jam or something. Which means you'll have to clean it or if it doesn’t work return it.

I'm assuming that the machine returns the rental to the correct place in the rack ready for the next rental.

The possibilities are endless.

Give me my local B&M store any day.

You're absolutely right. What if you want to rent Sin City next week, except that you are the 2nd person to rent the title, and a copy of Freddy Got Fingered is in the case? What will prevent the dishonest person from swapping discs with an AOL disc? How does the vending machine read what disc is in the case? Is it intelligent enough to do so to check that the proper disc is in the case?

When you call a phone number to complain, you might be the one who is billed for losing the disc.

Not that having a person that checks the disc will remove any chance for error, as any Blockbuster or Hollywood Video customer can tell you about some foul-ups by employees, but there are just more chances for fraud with automated vending machines.

I stayed at a Wyndham Hotel/Suites in Dallas that had one of these in the lobbies. They had DVD players in all rooms...and offered to add the rental to your hotel bill.

Didn't use it though...had my own DVDs
