DVDs Not Living Up To The LDs.. Ecspecialy Drunken Master!
I know most of us at least caught the tail end of the Laserdisc craze and for the most part have "traded" for their more recent little brothers, DVD. I recently bought the Thakral DVD version of Drunken Master 2 and was 2 seconds away from putting the Chinese Tai Seng laserdisc version I have on Ebay when I took a moment to watch it. The aspect ratio was so much wider on the LD than the DVD that I decided to keep it and have still not even watched the DVD all the way through.
Has anyone noticed this with other DVDs and Laserdiscs? Does anyone know if DM2 will ever get a proper DVD release? |

So you're saying that the Drunken Master 2 DVD is crap? That sucks. I've been hunting for an original chinese version (ie not region 1) because I absolutely refuse to buy the shitty "Legend of Drunken Master" re-release. But seeing as how they've already released LDM on dvd, it's unlikely that we'll see a proper DM2. Damn. That sucks.

Hi Bean,
The transfer is not "crap", but I was expecting the same aspect as the laserdisc. I find the DVD has a nice enough picture (the color correction seems slightly different) but when I ran a scene from the DVD and then immediately ran my LD I could see there was a good little crop difference between the two. Most people might say, "who cares" but my concern was this film may never get another transfer (at least as a region 1 since Hong Kong Legends in the UK has been doing some nice stuff in PAL but not NTSC) and I didn't want to give up the laser if this was the best the DVD was going to get. Granted, the company doing it is not one I have even heard of so it may have another release one day. My assumption is that Legend Of is a good enough quality transfer but I know it has been edited and dubbed. So, maybe Tai Seng or someone will give it a deserving DVD treatment one day. |
