CAST AWAY: so, the DTS and the DD sound the same ?

I was hoping for some extra positive for the DTS but do they thus sound identical ??

also, speaking of the day for night: did the filters use make the image a bit dark during night shots ? not sure I understand.

thanks

To answer your questions, I didn't do a comparison of the DTS and Dolby tracks in the review because I figured, what's the point? Both are included on the same disc, so doing a comparison between the two doesn't really matter. Consumers don't have to choose between purchasing one version over another, so there's no reason to try and sway someone one way or the other.

As for the day for night shots and the filters used, the intent of Zemeckis was to go natural in every way. So when it gets dark on the island, it gets dark in the film. That's not to say that you can't see anything, but rather that they were attempting to make it look as it would if you were actually on the island as well. I didn't have trouble making out detail or seeing the action during the night scenes, but I know some people are going to pop this disc in with all the lights on and it's going to mask a lot of the night stuff and make it really hard to figure out what they're looking at. It can be dark, but it's not "The Relic" dark.

Uh OK on the above, although I won't comment

However, could we ask which soundtrack you used for evaluation purposes in your review, as you do go into a small amount of detail as to the sound quality.

Also, whilst the disc may contain both tracks, not everyone has the facility to decode Dts soundtracks and surely it would be good to offer a comparison for those who can't or who are thinking of adding Dts to their systems? Just a thought and in no way meant as a criticism.

Cheers

T

hi Cliff

I see. Yet, I like when you detail the audible differences between the two (and they exist ! ) so I was wondering.

As for night shots, ouch, I really hope it's not like THE RELIC

regards and thanks

Thanks for the advice. I'm always trying to weigh the pros and cons of comparisons. For the record, I listened to the DTS track for my initial viewing and then went back to A/B with the Dolby.
