Do most people here watch DVDs on computer or on a player?

Player for me.

A player all the way. I just can't see sitting at my computer to watch a whole movie.

I have to agree here...I don't see the appeal of watching on a computer monitor, unless you have a really huge one

With my new laptop, now I can say both!

Can't wait for my next trip to the outer islands. It'll be fun to be watching a movie while waiting to board the plane!

It's actually not that bad. Remember, you're usually sitting only a foot or two from the screen, so you can see pretty well.

Also, computer monitors are also progressive HD displays, so the picture can look very sharp and smooth.

It can also be fun to have an audio commentary running in the background while you do other work on your PC.

Definitely the player. Not only for a better picture, but for the audio. Even though they make "THX-certified" computer speakers/setups, I still have yet to hear one that rivals my home theatre system.

Besides, part of the fun in movies for me is the whole experience, immersion and suspension of reality. I have a hard time getting that sitting in a chair in front of a monitor. I'm addicted to the cinematic experience!

I don't think your TV has a better picture than my monitor. I could be wrong, but last time I checked my kick ass 21" inch flat screen high res monitor looked a whole hell of alot better than most television sets.

I only have a DVD-ROM, and I'm not exactly sure what you people who are "player all the way" are using for you argument. I as far away from my monitor as I would sit from a TV, and picture size is not a problem. I have watched many, many DVD's this way, and am exceedingly pleased with the quality of both audio and video.

You player people are punks. :-)

This past weekend I tried watching a movie at my PC for the first time. Although the image was indeed smoother and richer, I found myself moving back to the living room after about fifteen minutes. Two reasons:

1) Psychological--I work at a computer all day, so when I sit in front of it, even if I'm watching a movie, I feel like I'm working.
2) Comfort--In front of my computer I have a desk chair. In front of my TV I have a comfy couch. 'Nuff said.

Well, the picture on my 50" RPTV might not be as smooth and sharp as a computer monitor. But as with many things in life, no matter what they say, size does matter!

My big comfy leather chair at my puter is much more comfy than my couch in front of my player, so I tend to watch more movies on my computer. Also, my computer is right beside the shelves, so it's convenient when you want to change films, and after I had my knee surgery going to the player to change movies was very painful so I got in the habit of using the computer a lot. I tend to use my player more when other people are here, and the computer when it's just me.

If I was in a college dorm room, I might use a computer, but in my house, with my nice setup, it's definitely a player.

I have a "normal" player with surround sound, a portable player with virtuality goggles for travel and a DVD player on the PC with the PowerDVD Software which I only use for screencaptures of special moments or for previews of DVDs for later viewing on the home player.

I think for conveince, it would have to be a standalone player. However, I like the fact that the computer can work as its own line doubler and scaler. Instead of paying 600+ for a progressive player, I can take the computer I already have and need and make few upgrades to make it a decent player the HDTV I hope to get in the future. I can probably do this at half the price of a progressive standalone because I have most of what I need already.

I also do not mind using my monitor. I don't get much time to actually be at the TV, but I know everyday I'm going to be at the computer. All I need to do is add a comfy chair and I'm ready to go.

I use a standalone player, for many of the reasons stated above:

* Comfy couch
* Bigger Screen
* My computer doesn't have a dvd-rom drive (it's old)
* Better Sound

I use a standalone player mostly because I upgraded from my standalone LD player and I'm not sure I want to go the HTPC route.....

Peace....

P.S. Isn't this more of a Hardware question????

I use a player to watch the movie and the computer to listen to the commentary while I'm writing the review. I find you don't tie everything up that way and it's easier all around.

Well, my DVD player is broken, and has been at the Sony HQ beeing fixed for over 3 months (!!!!!!!) they just wont give it back and keep saying "we need to order in a new part". So the only way to watch my movies is on the computer. When i first got my DVD player, i didnt have the right cable, but i had rented a movie, so i watched it on the PC. i HATED it. However now that i am used to seeing my new movies on the PC, it will be wierd getting my player back so i can watch them normally.

Computer.

But it's near my bed so it's not like I am sitting in a chair watching a movie; I'm comfortable, and the 5.1 sound is run out to my stereo. (Hey, are we allowed to call them "stereos" now that they have much more than two channels?)

I don't even own a TV set - my PC has a TV tuner built in which I use to watch tv.

That said, if wide screen TVs ever came down from $3,000 to $300, I'd buy one. But I guess they're waiting until they strip all the rich folks of their cash before they lower the prices...

True..never read it till now...

Back on topic...I use my stand alone player for most viewing, and my puter when I am working online. I'm trying to get my sisters gateway desktop case so I can modify it to make it an HTPC for a progressive unit.

Then...who knows.

j

ps...moving to hardware...
