Do you have a Christmas movie ritual?

I avoid all the normal TV offerings and always set some time aside to watch A wonderfull Life, NL Christmas Vacation and maybe the first Lethal Weapon?? on DVD.

It just seems to put me in the xmas spirit.

Anybody else have day a where they kick back and watch the classics?

My ritual is to watch something on Christmas day but not necessarily a Christmas movie.

Peace...

My wife and I usually watch bunches of Christmas stuff. On DVD, we always watch Charlie Brown, the original Grinch and Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol. We kept It's a Wonderful Life out of the rotation for a couple of years, but it may return this year. My wife likes to watch the Rudolph special from 1964 as well, but I often skip that one.

We usually watch at least one full-length version of A Christmas Carol. The George C. Scott one is definitive, IOHO, so that one always gets watched. We also like the musical version (Scrooge) with Albert Finney. It has great songs, and Finney and Scott approach the Scrooge character entirely differently. So, sometimes, we do both.

We have an old VHS recorded off the Disney channel of a dramatization of Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales, beautifully narrated by the late Denholm Elliot. I think that's the only non-DVD show we watch.

The George C Scott version of a Christmas Carol is not to be missed...Scott OWNS the character of Scrooge.

Throughout December most of my Christmas movies get play time, but ones that are the highest priority are Christmas Vacation, White Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street, Scrooged, and Home Alone. I can guarantee that one or more of those will be viewed on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day.

My X-Mas ritual is to watch any of the DVDs I've bought during September, October, and November that I haven't yet had time to watch in December.

I actually haven't seen that version but seeing as it comes highly recommended I will check it out. I've seen it around for a good price.

my dad taped a lot of those xmas specials when I was a kid (Rudolph, Charlie Brown, Frosty, Mickey, and others) so I usually watch that while wrapping xmas presents to get in the mood. Then I usually fall asleep watching 24 hours of a Christmas Story, I'll probably watch that a few time sduring the day and probably this year i'll pop in Elf, Jingle All The Way and I've been eyeballing a dvd of Christmas Carol so hopefully i'll get that.

No foolin'. I usually go and see a movie with my wife's family. Usually we have to see something "fun and light" which I translate into sucky and crappy.

I got home tonight after a particularly hectic/crappy day at work (that included news that the transmission on our 2002 Explorer with only 50,000 miles must be "rebuilt" to the tune of $2,000).

The wife wanted to watch some of our Xmas stuff, and chose something I had forgotten: The "Raymond Briggs Double Feature". This includes the animated features The Snowman, from 1982, a haunting story of a boy whose snowman comes to life (and featuring a beautiful music score), and Father Christmas, from several years later, in which we find out what Santa does for the 364 days of the year other than Xmas eve.

I bought a DVD of these 2 animated features several years ago, but was shocked to find that Father Christmas had been edited and re-dubbed. the crochety British voice in the original had been replaced with a PC benign voice that sounded like Mr French from Family Affair. Luckily, I eventually got a Region 2 British version of the 2 features which included Santa's original gruff but loveable voice, but, strangely, The Snowman had an introduction by David Bowie that was terrible (IMO), so i have had to keep both discs for one feature or the other.

And, yes, sidcupmartin, Scott can take Alistair Sim any day. the Geo. C Scott Christmas Carol aso features such luminaries as David Warner as Bob Crachitt, Susannah York as Mrs Crachitt, Edward (The Equalizer) Woodward as Ghost of Xmas Past, Frank Finley as Marley's Ghost, and Roger Rees as Scrooge's young nephew Fred.

Well I HAVE seen the George C Scott version of A Christmas Carol, and while it is VERY good, it is the SECOND best version available (IMHO). Alistair Sim IS Scrooge. When I hear the word Scrooge I think of him, and him alone (when I think of Patton I think of Scott).

We always watch:
A Christmas Story
White Christmas
Comfort and Joy (a great little movie available only on R2)

My wife also added Love Actually for herself this year, but once was enough of that one for me.

I watch A Charlie Brown Christmas and I Want a Dog for Christmas Charlie Brown on TV and on DVD. Then I watch a Christmas movie I rent from Blockbuster. I'm thinking either A Christmas Story or A Miracle on 34th Street (the original one)

as opposed to something "dark and gory" for xmas. Dude, take charge, but your foot down, stand up to your wife, demand xmas movies at your house of your choosing this christmas.

If not i'm sure you can go over to Tomkat's for his annual It's a Wonderful Live marathon

It's not my wife so much as it's my wife's family. My wife usually isn't too happy with the choice either.

And I don't necessarily want to see something "dark and gory," I just want to see something that doesn't insult my intelligence. If it's a horror or a comedy, then so be it.

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and my all time favorite Christmas Story. Also I have to watch Trading Places. When Dan Akroyd is dressed up as Santa Claus and starts eating the ham on the subway it just warms my heart.

Oh, I get it. Why would he not go to a Christmas party? Because he's Jewish! I get it - the Jewish character is a skunk and he stinks!

I always thought that He-Man closely resembled Hitler's idea of the Ubermensch just a bit too much - this just confirms Mattel and Filmation's secrect Nazi agenda.

Yeah I watch that one everyonce in a while. That scene is funny as hell. I always thought it was a half a salmon. Whatever it is its still hilarious.

I always seem to end up watching one classic and a bunch of newer stuff. I had my fill of scrooge when I was younger.

Usually it's something like Go, but I think this Christmas afternoon I'm heading to a friend's video store in order to watch Die Hard and maybe something else. Should be a lark.
