From what I understand--no. The only way to get the Production Diaries footage is to buy them. I could be wrong, however.

Hmm, wonder if we'll get an eventual Blu-Ray/HD-DVD release with the film in HD all the Production Diaries included on one disc? To dream...

Just to clarify the the 2nd disc of Diaries. These are post production diaries on creating the special effects and coverage on the Howard Shore score problem/developement.

from DVDactive.com

Quote:
nearly three hours of post production diaries (55-90) which reveal virtually every aspect of post production on the groundbreaking film

The transfer on Kong is unbelievable! One of the best seen! I can’t even imagine this in HD.

Well done. I still wish they had added a DTS ES track.

I have a question for all you Kong fans. Something my wife and I have been debating.

In this new version, does Kong fall in love with Ann? By that I mean, is his attachment to her romantic in nature, or is it something else? Give any evidence you can.

I won't say which side I'm on until I've heard some replies.

It is my opinion that Kong and Ann have no romantic attachment. Their relationship is one of kindred spirits and is based on loneliness. I got really irritated at all the inappropriate sex jokes about this film. I see no reason that their relationship should be seen as romantic in this version.

I've read interviews with Jackson in which he seems to support your viewpoint.

Quote:
To me, the relationship develops from Kong's point of view to one where he wants to protect her. It's a dangerous relationship for anybody else because it's like an animal protecting its child. In a way, Kong's relationship with Ann is like that.

So, is the Howard Shore production diary on the PD box that came out in December, or has it been buried completely? I'd love to hear even a few snippets of Shore's rejected score.

I wonder if they have made it an easter egg on the dvd. Still need to pick mine up, but i wonder if they left it off for the future EE of the movie. I would love to get a big long extra on the 2 scores for the film. . . hell Howard Shore's optional movie track/cd would be awesome. It sounded like the track had been nearly finished until PJ said it wasn't the sound he was looking for and went to James Newton Howard.

I got to say folks, there is definitely romance involved. The music, shots, pacing etc. is as romantic as it can get without getting creepy. I think it's two beings that knows they can only have so much "love" between each other, but there is certainly romance there. To just say they are "buds" or parent/child relationship would certainly preclude much of the film's itended impact.

As a matter of fact, it is that "spark" in this film that for me makes it better than the original (which I am a die hard fan of).

My R3 NTSC DVD arrived yesterday, its content is identical to R1, and the picture is great, but the DD 5.1 audio is even better. I'm very impressed with the sound! The score's volume sounds like it's been turned down though and is overpowered by the sound effects, which is a bit disappointing.

King Kong 2 Disc

Hey peeps,

I was roaming around Wal-Mart today and saw the 2-disc SE for Peter Jackson's King Kong. Has anyone heard any whispers concerning a Slam-Bang Special Edition for the film or is the current 2-disc the only way to go? I don't know about you guys but 2X dipping for titles is getting tired really fast.

I doubt there will be another SE on SD-DVD, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a new set in HD-DVD in time for Christmas, maybe containing the production diaries.

According to The Digital Bits:

"Peter Jackson has confirmed in recent interviews that he's held back significant content (like audio commentaries and deleted scenes) from the current 2-disc King Kong DVD, because Universal is planning on releasing a more elaborate 4-disc version later in 2006. Just FYI."

I can't find a link to it though.

So what I'm hearing is... there was definitely no romance involved in the relationship between Kong and Ann, except that there definitely WAS romance involved. Very helpful.

Myself, I think in this version it's entirely platonic. There's an implication that Kong had a family but he lost them all and has been alone for quite some time, and in Ann he finds someone he can have a mutually protective familial bond with. Likewise for her.
Squid Lips, you say that if we take the relationship as purely platonic, it lessens the films "intended impact". But Jackson himself in an interview above describes the relationship as platonic, so clearly he didn't "intend" it that way.
Those of you who say it's romantic... how about some evidence? Where do you get that from?

There is no evidence of a romantic relationship. You've got it right, Porkchop. I've heard people say that Kong was jealous of Jack and that's why he attacks him.

It's creepy that people actually thing there was a relationship between the two. Kong saw her as a companion, Ann saw him as a protector. Nothing more.
The seventies version however had that super creepy moment where Kong was holding Dwan under the waterfall so she could clean up and was sort of undressing her with his finger and enjoying it FAR MORE then a giant gorilla should be enjoying it.

This is the ongoing debate between my wife and I. She thinks there's a romantic relationship between the two, and therefore the whole movie is creepy and perverse. I disagree, but she's not hearing it.
