King Kong (2005) coming March 28th

From the DavisDVD.com Rumour Mill

Quote:
King Kong (2005)

Word has it that director Peter Jackson's King Kong will be released in April as an elaborate two-disc set. According to DVD producer Michael Pellerin, they've saved a lot of behind-the-scenes material for this release that wasn't included on the recently released Kong Production Diaries. No word yet if Universal and Jackson will also release an "ultimate edition" extended cut a la New Line's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
Well i would be interested and i would hope if this is the only release (hahah who am i kidding) that it would include the DTS-ES track from the theater. Yet Peter Jackson has been quoted as saying that he did make cuts to the film and would love to do an extended cut of the film if he is allowed. So if they follow the DD EX track on the regular 2-disc edition, and the go all out on an extended cut edition later with the DTS-ES track then i would be fine with that too. Love to hear a commenatry from the Kong animators

If the DVD releases of this are different enough, then this is one film I might purposely double dip on.

I wouldn't mind a shorter version of this which omits Jack Black's last line, "It was beauty." Yeah, right.

I think that point was underlined, and re-underlined repeatedly over the course of the movie. Peter Jackson should trim back on the film and cut out some of the repetition.

Remove the absolute classic line? The only reason Jack Black said it was because Peter Jackson completly intended for Faye Raye to say it but she died before he had a chance to film her scene.
I do not want that line removed from any version of the film.

Didn't she die in Aug 2004 or something like that? Would that mean she would have been alive during the making of King Kong 2005?

Peace...

How much damn behind-the-scenes material do they think will be marketable for this film?!

Little update. Rumours now have the release of the movie for a late March release now (28th according to DavidDVD.com)

Also i shall post the region 2 art that they have going for the dvd cover art. This comes from a great poster on the IGN boards who just happens to of received a Norwegian insider-magazine for the movie-business. So things could change for us Region 1 people but still a good chance of it being true for us

I like the single disc art better for then the 2 disc set

No details have been released yet other than retail prices of $29.98 and $31.98, respectively. Keep checking back for official disc details the minute they're revealed!

Do we think this is it, or can we all expect an edition towards the end of the year similar to the LOTR?

I liked KK, but not enough to double dip- I would rather have just the super duper one.

Hard to say. With LOTR, Jackson was upfront about the versions that were coming out and so far I haven't read anything in regards to an even bigger edition coming out later in the year.
It's always a crap-shoot anyway right?

I read an interview where Jackson said he would like to do an extended cut and that 30-40 minutes were cut(!), but it was up to Universal.

He also said in that interview that New Line let him work on the DVD releases of LotR, namely the extended ones, while production was happening on the theatrical releases and Universal are approaching it differently.

Knowing Universals propensity for the Double Dip, although with PJ involved I may cut them some slack, I may just wait.

I wish he could say because it would be nice if the Extended Edition, if it was made, included both versions in case the extra 30 minutes were not great, we could watch the already lengthy 3 hr version.

Man, I wish we could cut down some of the pacing.

Maybe the future of DVD Players will give people the option to edit and burn their own versions of DVD with out using editing equipment.

Amazon.co.uk and HMV UK have their own exclusive covers.

I have seen R1 specs saying that it includes "35 all new production diaries."

I read a quote from someone at Universal who said the standalone production diaries would not appear on the DVD release of Jackson's Kong.

It looks like it will include the post production diaries, I didn't realise there were 35 of them.

Yes, but you can still download the post-production diaries at Kong is King.net. I'm not sure how long these will be available for free on the website, but I'm assuming they will be taken down just before the DVD is released.

I wasn't the biggest fan of this remake, although I really did enjoy the visuals and action sequences, so I probably will not be picking this up when it comes out. It's just one of those cases where the hype eclipsed the actual film for me, and the production diaries ruined the magic a little; not to mention the obvious CGI effects. I'm on the fence now, but maybe once I've given it a chance to sink in (I saw it less than two weeks ago) I'll change my tune.

The DVD Talk boarders linked to an R4 release where the extras are the Post Production diaries. They also threw in the Production diaries free as part of their offer, it's just under $40 US shipped. Granted, it's not coming out there until 4/12, but still...

Nice artwork, but I am still rather "iffy" on buying this release. I believe a new edition will be along this Christmas, and I just know I won't visit this title more than once. It will just sit on my shelf until a new edition comes out.

And I dunno about a future SE of this film. It underperformed at the box office, and the fact that they're releasing 1 and 2-disc editions simultaneously seems to indicate that this'll be it.

I tend to agree. I think if we see a crazy SE, it will be on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, where they included the full film's length in HD, plus all of the production diaries in one mega-set. Something to really show off the new format.

The movie has done a bit more then a half a billion dollars worldwide. We tend to only think of American box office reciepts but the reality is the movie has done a bit more then a hundred million dollars MORE overseas then it did here. I think if Peter Jackson wanted to put out an extended edition he wouldn't be met with much resistance from the studios.

Well if they release an extended edition of the movie in November then they will probably get my money. Just like they will for the 2-disc edition that i'm sure i will pick up as well. Its the LOTR dvd thing all over again and well it really didn't seem to bother that many people.

I only bought the extended editions of Lord of the Rings and not the two-disc theatrical cut DVDs. I might hold out until confirmed details are released, so I can decide which version of Kong to buy.

Didn't bother me because Peter Jackson was upfront about telling the fans there would be multiple versions on DVD. I'll buy the regular 2-disc set then happily plunk down more money for an extended edition later in the year.

The quality of Jacksons DVD extras and EE's make it worth the dbl dip.
I just didnt love KK so much that I have to see it again in a month or so.
I could hold out until whatever comes out in Nov and be happy.

LOTR, on the other hand, I couldnt wait to get on DVD into my home theater. So, I felt that urgency to get it in Aug since it was like 9 months since I saw them in the theater. Once I saw the quality of FOTR:EE, I knew the others would be must haves also.

Again, it's the honesty so I can make a buying decision now that I appreciated from PJ.

I can't wait to see what he can do with Halo, and I really hope he wraps things up down the line and visits the Hobbitt.

Axel Music are selling the R1 two disc set for UK £16.99 and some people that have bought it from there have received it already, that's two weeks before its actual release.

They have a scan of the back cover too:

Here is PJ's acceptance speech from the EMPIRE Awards. It's also a blooper real and has some footage from the...er...extended cut.

This might be on the DVD, so don't watch if you'd prefer to wait.
