Best DVDs for surround sound ambience?

As a companion to my thread in Hardware, I was wondering if you guys had a few favorite DVDs that don't so much showcase roaring surrounds like car chases, but showcase ambience; birds, wind, cars, etc.

I’m looking for DVDs that are enveloping even when things are not exploding.

Predator DTS track, it really makes it sound like you're in a jungle the entire movie. Plus with classics like "I ain't got time to bleed" its a sure winner.

Twister has tons of wind in some scene.

GlenGarry, GlenRoss has some great ambient rain.

Some Vietnam war movies, like Platoon, will have great ambient sounds when they're in the jungle.

Peace...

Two good discs for background ambience for me are Solaris and Cast Away - they make really great use of the surrounds in a subtle way.

If you want to hear the definitive rain/storm scene (IMO) cue up the one in Open Range. It's great.

Good one, Vonner. I forgot how good the DTS is on that disc.

I'm sure there are many others, but just off the top of my head, the dam scene in X2 has a good bit of ambient surround effects. Actually, I think the opening scenes of the 1st Xmen, with all the rain, also has a good amount. The X2 scene is one that made one of the cats peer around the room, with her ears flippin' around. ...so cute...

Not to mention the gunfight in the end. When the first gun goes off, you'll swear you took one in the gut.

Lord of the Rings has great ambience throughout, especially in Fellowship, when their in the mines of Moria(sp?).

I agree, and was going to mention that too, but the thread was about ambience, not shear knock-you-on-your-ass bass punches. At any rate, yes, the gunfight is awesome.

Well i always liked the sound in Unbreakable from the train station scene, being in the pool and caught in the rain. I think its another reason why i loved Identity so much because of its constant thunder storm playing through all the speakers.

Also some awesome tracks are Finding Nemo and DareDevil both are great for both a HT demo and for atmosphere.

Batman Begins is another great dvd to use especially for all the scenes they do with the bats. they are everywhere in the speakers and works out nicely and so does the Scarecrow with the fear effect in place.

The Perfect Storm is great for the waves beating around everywhere and then adding the wind on top of that

The rain at the beginning of the the first xmen movie is good. But for overall best ambient sound I would have to say for me is Master and Commander. There in the middle of the freakin ocean! The sound designer did a fantastic job on that movie.

I highly suggest Hero! That's one of the things that really stood out to me (along with the beautiful colors) when I watched it on DVD was the sound. There's one scene in particular where two men are fighting in a light rain. Every drop of rain that fell gently into a puddle was like music to my hears. Just beautiful!

You have to watch this movie. The sound, colors and scenery are reason enough regardless of what the story is about. lol

The "Star Trek" films work pretty well... for a different kind of ambience - computer noises and people talking in the background about shield status or whatnot.

Airforce One has some great ambient sound, especially that speach in the big, open room, very cool.

The first release of The Terminator has the best ambient surround sound of ANY DVD I've watched to date!

Peace...
