Jurassic Park LD vs DVD measured (with graphs)

Hi folks,

This is my first post here. Be warned, i am extremely anal, nitpicking and technically annoying about both audiophile and videophile issues. I have won single handedly the 'Most Valuable Dork' (MVD) and 'Very Important Nerd' (VIN) awards on several other forums. I usually don't post anything without providing a buttload of technical evidence (screenshots, graphs, etc...) or having Stephen Spielberg come to your place and pointing it out directly on your setup. My only excuse to all this is, that i am german.

Since the speculations about the Jurassic Park DVDs seem to be still an issue over the net, i decided to give it a go and measure them again. This time i included the DD laserdisc, as a point of reference.

I created a SPL measurement site that is going to be an anchor for future measurements. Graphs of 'The Rock' laserdisc (non-CC) vs. the new Criterion DVD (DD and DTS) are going to be up soon.

Here we go:
My DVD/LD 'SPL' site

Hope this is of some help. For all those who are going to claim 'yeah, but you can't measure which version sounds better'... I wholeheartedly agree, please read my leading comments on the site.

Best regards
Bjoern

Hello Bjoern! Welcome to the forum.

Actually, your site was brought to our attention in this thread: (Link). You've got a great looking site and I read through your JP DVD/LD comparison. Good stuff.

There are a couple of other technically anal people that post here (I'm not one. . .I'm kind of a technical slob ) including Tyler Durden who was the first to spot the whole Jurassic Park DTS problem, so you'll fit right in.

<--- superfluous Smiley.

MVN, MVD sure!! But I read your review as intrigued as ever

You also kinda pissed me off since I bought the DTS DVD and feel ripped off!!!

Anyway Glad you're here I only wish I was as savy to do those measurements.

P.S. Just a thought if you're ever bored I'd love to see the graph of the plane sequence in fight club

Bjoern...
Thanks for the info.
Until the dvd I had only watched JP on vhs, so I have to take everyones word on the whole JP dts thingy.... the dts sounds pretty good to me,I guess it's true that ignorance is bliss.
Nevertheless, I am curious to hear it as everyone says it should sound.

Thanks a lot for the warm welcome, guys! Much appreciated.

I will update the SPL site with graphs from Lost World and The Rock, hopefully until the weekend.

Hank, i will try to make a graph for the plane sequence someday. I think it will be not that spectacular on the bass front, but will have among the highest levels in the mid to high range. That scene is LOUD
