I went on a Criterion Collection binge yesterday...

Yesterday was a Criterion Collection day of days for me. Barnes & Nobles is having a "Buy 2 DVD's Get 1 Free" special going on, and since I had some spare money I decided to partake of the offer. But, I thought to myself, why not get some movies you've been meaning to get for a while now? Why not breeze past the usual sections and head into foreign (pardon the pun) territory? So I did. I brought home Yasujiro Ozu's "Floating Weeds" and "Tokyo Story," as well as Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai." I haven't seen any of these films, but great reviews and word-of-mouth on all of them caused me to desire owning and seeing them. Plus, my favorite podcast, Filmspotting (formerly known as Cinecast), had a great discussion on the two Ozu films that piqued my interest.

So, did I do good? Am I in for a marvelous movie time? Let me know.

Seven Samurai is pretty great... I haven't seen the other ones. There was a time I would buy anything with a Criterion labelm on it... That time is long passed.

It's a good sale for sure.

Seven Samurai is the only one I have seen and you can't go wrong with that one.

Reaver, if you haven't opened it yet, I would return Seven Samurai. Criterion is rereleasing it later this year as a 2 disc set, with new transfer, new translation, and a bunch of bonus stuff.

Thanks, but I'm not bothered. That one was the free one, so I'm not out any money on it. If I like it enough I;ll just pick up the new one when it hits and sell off the old one. Thanks for the info though.

The Robson HMV in Vancouver had a buy 1 get 1 free sale for CD/DVD 2 weeks ago from 9-noon on a saturday 2 weeks ago. The criterion section was pummelled. I picked up Hoffman and Beauty & The Beast - both for $60CDN.

Ozu is a much better friend than our more famous and popular Kurosawa. The Floating Weeds set is really great with both versions. His stories are simple and slow, but really come together at the end in a most emotional climax. He works the camera beautifully, using mostly (if not, all) still shots that are so well composed. His movies are very Japanese culturally and have a lot to do with family and the problems between generations, growing up, and getting old. They are pure poetry. I don't think you have not made a mistake in getting those two beautiful films.

Each Criterion was about $30, which didn't seem overpriced.
