Last Horror Film That Actually Scared You?

The new “Nightmare on Elm St” release reminded me of this.

When was the last time you remember actually being scared by a film. I’m not talking about those cheap scares that make you jump. I’m talking about those slow, curl up in your seat, pause the movie to lower your heart rate, scares. Maybe I’ve become desensitized, but so few films actually scare me these days that I’ve actually started disliking the horror genre.

The films I remember that really scared me were:

1. Night of the Living Dead (1968).
This film stills scares me today. I don’t know what it is, but…zombies, they creep me out, man.

2.John Carpenter’s The Thing
When I was little, I had to scream at my mother to turn it off. I don’t know if it would hold up today, though

3. A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Like “The Thing,” I’ve not watched it in awhile, so I don’t know if it would hold up, but it scared me to death when I first saw it.

3. Ju-On
Creepy! That awful noise the “grudges” make is nothing short of upsetting.

4. Evil Dead
Believe it or not, the Deadites scared me.

5. Alien/Aliens
Nuff said.

6. House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Now, when I saw this, I was "on something" that made this film very, very scary. I know that technically shouldn’t count, but dude...I freaked out!

That’s honestly I can think of. There are several non-horror films that have scared me to death like “City of God” and “Irreversible.” There are way more of those films than actual horror films. I’m not sure if the horror genre has gotten worse or if I’ve just lost my taste for.

Your thoughts?

Theres been a few that have jumped me in the last say 10 years if you consider that a scare. However these movies didn't leave much of an impression. Now the ones I conside scarey leave that impression. You remember that baby. Now if we go by my scarey movie definition I would have to say the last ones I remember making an impression in no particular order are:

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" - Couldn't sleep for a week.

Alien - 3 words - Tom Skerritts doom

Halloween 1 and 2 (oddly enough) - Captain Kirk at his best.

Those are all I can think of at the moment. The 90s where pretty clow for good horror and so have the last 6 years.

The Ring. definately.

And I agree on House on Haunted Hill - seeing people on a camera, but not being able to see them with your eyes as they come towards you is just creepy as all get out.

There has only been one horror movie ever to creep me out at all, thus it holds a high spot on my list of best movies for actually getting me scared. The movie is Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Kairo (or Pulse). It is just totally creepy the way he composes his shots and uses the camera.

The Ring was the last one to do it to me. The Exorcist did a number on me when I first saw it as well.

The Shining - both versions handled the woman in room 237 quite well. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.

The Sixth Sense - say what you want about it, but I still find moments in this film to be very effective. That poor kid.

The Haunting (1963) - this is one of the best haunted house movies around. I'd also recommend The Legend of Hell House and maybe The Sentinel (1977), if you're interested in a couple of other creepy films that owe a lot to this classic. The remake is an embarrassment.

"The Exorcist" especially when they added the part when she's coming down the stairs on all fours!

Alien - just scared the living hell out of me, still does!

The Amityville Horror - just too creepy, still have trouble watching it to this day!

Jaws - I mean, who didn't get scared with this one? When I first saw it, I couldn't even take a bath for a couple of weeks (no kidding!) I was only 7 years old and thought that the shark could find its way through the water faucet!

Suspiria - Dario Argento... 'nuff said!

Phantasm - the flying balls and the trolls!

Honorable Mentions:

The Sixth Sense - just that one part where you see something run in the background while the kid and the mother are in the kitchen. I know that part is coming when I see the movie, the it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

Signs - the part where they're having the birthday party and the Alien shows up in the background and everybody starts screaming!

"The Exorcist" for the same reason David mentioned, plus just the fact that you just dread every time they have to go up to that room. Now that I work in Georgetown, those creepy stairs are like 5 minutes from me.

"The Amityville Horror" as well. That is just creepy, especially the voice that says "Get out!!"

"The Omen" (the original). The scenes at the end are chilling.

"Rosemary's Baby." This movie is just creepy as hell.

"Session 9" This film I found out about on these forums. Man, did it creep me out when I was watching it alone at night with the lights all out.

"Poltergeist 3" when I was a kid freaked me out. Those mirrors and that old man. I remember actually shaking, and my dad turned it off before I could finish it.

"Blair Witch Project" When I first saw this, I thought it was real, because of all the internet hype. The idea that you didn't know what was going on or who the evil thing was just creeped me out.

"Halloween 1 and 2" are classic horror films, and I think they still hold up.

"Nightmare on Elm Street" Yes, this one was just plain scary.

"The Ring" was very creepy indeed.

"Ju-on" saw this film with a friend and was actually scared. "The Eye" was also eerie, but "Ju-on" was much better, and I liked the remake "The Grudge"

"Night of the Demons" I had to flee the room as a kid because it just got too scary for me.

"The Changeling" was another one I read on this forum. Also a good creepy film.

Oh, and I loved "Wrong Turn."

The only movie that ever scared me to the point where I couldn't sleep was The Exorcist.
Halloween, Alien and a few others have creeped me out but I never any real problems after seeing them.

Yes, and I was amazed at how good she still looked in Sideways. But Candyman was just great genre horror.

Candyman definitly always got to me, creepy ass music! Even Candyman 2 has it's moments.

The Exorcist, for the above mentioned reasons, scary as hell.

Exorcist 3, was really scary too. The old woman in the in confessional "I slit er throat, and watched er bleed".

Pet Semetary, absolute creepiest movie ever! Scared the hell out of me everytime, and still gives me goosebumps(Zelda). Part 2 is no slouch either.

Yes, that was a good one. Speaking of Stephen King movies, I would also have to say that Cujo was very frightening. And that first part of "IT" on TV. When that clown is telling the boy Georgie that he will float. Ewww, I still get shivers.

Yes, the sequel on Pet Semetary was very good.

Pet Semetary is about the best adaptation of Stephen King book next to Misery. Pretty close to the book minus some details.
The movie was creepy. Zelda, the sister kept in the back room (who was actually played by a man) was just about the scariest thing in that movie.

These are about the only movies that still creep me out, when I was young of course it was different, not much affects me these days, I guess my dad taking me to see Hellraiser in the theater when I was 5 desensitizes oneself

The Ring - the Japanese Original scared my pants off, the remake (while well done) didn't have quite the same impact.

The Nameless (los sin nombre) - a little Spanish film that had me biting my nails the whole time. Very creepy.

Blair Witch - yeah, I know. but i saw it at one of those rare preview screenings, when the hype was still building. Also helped that the theater was freezing cold.

The Descent - I don't know if anyone has seen this British gem yet, but if you're even the least bit claustrophobic (like me) be warned. No film has made me this uncomfortable (in a good way) for a long time.

I always consider it a rare treat when I find a horror film that really scares me. That doesn't happen NEARLY often enough. Too many movies these days settle for being "thrill rides" that make people jump and laugh instead of taking time to build up a creepy atmosphere.

This was the case with me too. I wonder if they planned it to be that way. I was shivering from being creeped out, but also because it was pretty cold in the theater. It really added to the effect.

Is this "the last movie i saw that actually scared based on release date" or "the last movie i saw that actually sacred me...doesnt matter when it was released". For example, i could list the exorcist because it scared me and i watched it recently, but its not the most recently released movie that scared me.

Last movie that actually scared me was:

"The Exoricism of Emily Rose"

When I was a kid, it was Trilogy of Terror. It was a set of three short stories starring Karen Black. One of the stories had this little wooden African idol with a gold chain around its neck to keep the spirits quiet or some such nonsense. Of course the chain comes off and it chases her around her apartment trying to kill her. I had nightmares for a week.

Poltergeist really scared me as a kid.

I was hoping Blair Witch Project would do it, but no luck. And I saw it before all the hype.

But the last movie to actually scare me was The Ring. Some of that may have to do with the fact that I was coming home to an empty apartment. My wife (girlfriend at the time) was out of town and I had recently moved out of my mom's place so I was not used to it being so dark and quiet when I got home. Of course, I went online and found the video that they watched in the movie. I kept waiting for the phone to ring.
