Your Halloween Film Festival

I usually try and get together with a few friends on or around Halloween and watch a few scary films. I’m not sure what the lineup will be this year (or if we’re even doing it), but I’m always looking for interesting or obscure horror films to add. I’m pretty picky when it comes to horror, but I’m open to any suggestions you might have.

I don't like horror movies, so I usually just watch The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Ever heard of "Hardware"? It's an obscure SCI-FI/Horror movie released back in the 80s about a killer robot that builds itself from different parts. One of the main reasons I still love it is because Lemmy from Motorhead appears very briefly in it as a taxi cab driver. Iggy Pop also has a small part in it. It starred Dylan MacDermett. I own it on laserdisk as it has never been released on DVD...

Another movie I remember from the 80s was one called "Scared To Death" I hardly remember it, but I remember that it was about a monster and the cop that was out to get it. I've never seen it available except at Blockbuster on VHS tape..and that was a very long time ago.

I love Hardware, I also have the Laserdisc.
Interesting enough I saw this film when it came out in the theater and it was longer, the Laserdisc is missing some parts, specifically the acid trip with all the fractals was MUCH longer in the theater version.

I have the soundtrack on CD as well.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II. They are excellent horror films.

I don't like this movie by any degree but it is very popular...Suspiria.

Let's see

Dead Birds
Fright Night
Near Dark
Wolf Creek
Last House on the Left (I hate it but I hate Wes Craven)
Cronos (not scary but very good movie)
The Other (1972)
28 Days Later
The Beyond
Re-Animator
3...Extremes
Audition
Candyman
The Changeling
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
In the Mouth of Madness
Prince of Darkness
The Return of the Living Dead
From Beyond

I never got Suspiria. I guess I understand it as a novelty, but I had trouble getting through the whole thing.

From what I've seen of Argento, I don't like. I can't place my finger on it. I just can't get into his films, but he is consider a horror legend. It also might be the fact that he films his daughter nude, which is unbelievably messed up.

Its been a couple of years since I have done my 'Scream A Thon' : watch all 3 Scream movies back to back, so I am getting together with a few peeps and watching those soon.

Also, I have a friend who have NEVER seen a Nightmare or Friday the 13th movie! So I am going to get to expose her to those this month as well.

I figure Nightmare 1, 3 and 7 are the best of the series, and Friday 1-4 (until Jason dies for real) should be good to go with.

oh yes, there will be booze.

Suspiria is an amazing film! Argento is a brilliant filmmaker, but I do understand it's a specifc taste, his films are quite a bit different from anything made in America. His movies revolve more around a mood or a feeling than a plot, watch his movies with an eye on lighting, color and textures for the true experience.

Argento films are either hit or miss with American fans. Most people won't get the story or anythign but he creates some of the best moods/atmosphere settings in all of horror and that I think is what attracts most American fans to him. Suspiria is worth a spin by any horror fan if not just to say they've seen an Argento film

I really disagree. When I saw Suspiria, I did take notice of Argento's use of color and light, but I didn’t think it was enough to save the film from being mediocre. As for the mood, I guess I’m either not enough of a horror fan or I really didn't get what he was trying to do, because I found his “mood” more grating and silly than anything else. And that music by the Golbins just yanked me right out of the film. I’m a fan of Italian cinema, but I really don’t see Argento’s appeal.

I'm always open to discussion if anyone wants to give me his or her insight on Argento, though. Perhaps a Film Discussion thread.

my friend, are you challenging me to a duel????

You've got me in an Argento mood, I must now go hunt down some Argento dvds to catch up. I never understood Argento's facinastion with Goblin, watch his cut of Dawn of the Dead, night and day different then Romero's, but probably his best work other then producing Asia but that itself is another tghread
