He likes to skin his humps...
If I may be allowed some profanity...(skip if easily offended)
MGM fucks me in the ass once again!! From what I have heard, the region 1 Silence of the Lambs has burnt in titles...region 4 does not. Instead it's got those hideous monstrosities known as player generated titles. **Ugh** I should have learned long ago that region 4 always screws it up. So my copy is going right back to the supplier, and I'll be getting the R1 version. Fuck region 4, and fuck their friends and relatives. I just hope this means that the R1 Terminator will not have player generated titles like the R4 did. Anyway, in short, if you are a region 4 consumer, do NOT get the SotL disc. Import it. |

You shouldn't even get the MGM version, get the Criterion one. The MGM version is an embarrasment to the filmmakers. Take a look at what I wrote on another thread:
Screw this new DVD and screw MGM! Here's maybe some reasons why Demme didn't participate in the documentary: *His preferred aspect ratio for the film was 1.85:1, not 1.75:1 *He and DP Tak Fujimoto were big fans of the Criterion edition's transfer. *He was VERY clear in stating that he did NOT want a 5.1 remix done, becuase he felt that the original soundtrack to the film perfectly expressed what he wanted. *All he had to say about the film had already been said in the Criterion commentary (Sort of the John Carpenter "Halloween" thing) With all of these things, I really don't see any reason to get the MGM edition. The only reason I might rent it is becuase I'm curious to know what the promotional materials were like. Criterion's edition is nearly prefect, and while it lacks all the shine and newness of other transfers, I enjoyed it a lot. The supplements really go deep, and bring a lot of new insight into the film. The commentary is one that should not be missed by any degree of horror fan, and "Voices of Death" will knock the socks off of any run-of-the-m,ill studio supplement. If you want to get the REAL specail edition of "Silence of the Lambs", get the Criterion one! ------------------ If you're a film fan in Colorado, be sure not to miss BLOODFEST!, my horror film festival benefiting Bonfils Blood Center. There are great films showing, so you should come! Get all the info here! Go to the missing title art gallery for fun comics, creative writing, and original short films! or, visit Cheap Thrills ...or more? for lots of horror cinema fun! I have the Criterion version...got it when it first came out.
I mostly got the new version for the 70 minute doco...but I still want the film the way it should be. (Was especially hoping the print would be noticeably better.) |

The Criterion edition is on it's way, but I still may get the new edition for the aforementioned doco, and the 5.1 remix (prologic sounds like ass on my system)

Im confused now!! I was planning on getting the MGM version for the documentary, but now all these thing shave been said, I may just stick with my Criterion edition.
But--'med' says that the Criterion version is on its way (?!?) Does this mean I should hold off getting the MGM version and wait for this new Criterion edition with the documentary on it?! Confoooooosed!! |

Redux, I think he means it's in the mail on its way to his house (or apartment or whatever). There will be no new Criterion edition.
As for the cropping, well, maybe it is a little (1.85:1 to 1.78:1) but keep in mind that a lot of 1.85:1 films are transferred this way on DVD. I don't think it matters much, especially since this new DVD is anamorphic and has a cleaner transfer. JD and TF may have been big fans of the older transfer, but then again, how many of you laserdisc owners would still be big fans of the transfers on those discs? |

Fortunately, I have the Criterion LD of this title. I sold my Criterion DVD to Dave McFly and I'll be getting the new re-release.
I've been happy with the Criterion LD so I don't think I'll miss the Criterion DVD.... Peace... ------------------ My DVD Profiler List |
