Silent Cinema 2 for one

At my local Dollar General store they have a few dvd's packaged 2 discs for $5. On one disc there is Metropolis and a black and white version of the Wizard of Oz and the other disc has Night of the Living Dead and a Betty Boop cartoon on it. All I can see is the front of the cases so I can't see any specs but on the front of the Metropolis DVD it says Silent Cinema. I know there are about 4 or 5 cuts of Metropolis out there. Does anyone know anything about these mini sets?

I would stay away from these. Unless Metropolis is from Kino, it's probably a cut and/or piss-poor version.

A black and white version of Wizard of Oz? You mean a different one than the classic starring Judy Garland, right? Otherwise, what would be the point?

I'll check to see what it says. I am sure it will be there tomorrow.

Ok here is where I get blasted but I am probably the only person on the face of the earth that didn't like the Wizard of Oz.

I'm not a fan either.

There have been quite a few adaptations, but I'm guessing this is the silent one starring Oliver Hardy from 1925. It's also on the 3 disc Warner set as a bonus, fully remastered. I'm very sure the dollar store one will look like crap.

Damn I knew I liked piratehunter for some reason . I checked and these discs are put out by Catcom. Anyone know anything about them I mean the quality of transfers etc.? I am sure they aren't the best quality but I mean look at the source material for Metropolis. I mean it was made in 1925 wasn't it and it's been chopped up and re-edited so much that the original cut is no longer in existance.

manicsounds gets a big because this is what I found on it

Metropolis/ The Wizard of Oz (1925 silent version with Oliver Hardy as the Tin Man)

I did find this out

Product Description
Double feature: Metropolis, the original sci-fi classic (115 minutes), and The Wizard of Oz, original 1925 silent version (87 minutes). Also includes a Betty Boop cartoon and a Scarecrow cartoon.

FWIW, the 1925 version of The Wizard of Oz starring Larry Semon was written about by Walter Kerr in his wondeful study of silent comedy-The Silent Clowns. As a boy, Kerr looked forward to that film more than any other. But when he saw it, it sucked and was not funny at all and little to do with the novel.

I tried to watch it on TV once, and after seeing so much great silent comedy from Chaplin, Lloyd and Keaton et al, I found it quite boring.

My guess is that those cheap DVDs will be of execrable quality. But, for the price, even if they suck, you won't be out all that much.
