Unconventional ways to show off your system.

Ok so this past weekend I got to go to a higher end video and audio retailer about 4hrs. from where I live. I got to listen to several different speaker arrangements and selections. Although I didn't get to buy any speakers since I just patched the roof I did get to listen to several different kinds of speakers including Def Teck, Boston Acoustics, Klipsch and Polk. However, I was wondering what you used to show off your system that was a little unconvential. I bought the first dvd of this group http://www.animusic.com/ and actually enjoy it. I have been looking at some Blue Man Group DVD's but I haven't ever heard them play.

So what do you use to show off your system that's not quite in the standard norm? Also, does anyoneknow where I can sample the Blue Man Group stuff?

I'm not sure what would be considered unconvential. I use anything that challenges my system or exhibits its capabilities. We're big fans of Blue Man Group though, and have seen their broadway style show in Chicago, and both road tours (although, "How to be a Megastar Tour 2.0" was greatly recycled from the original Complex Tour.) I wasn't exactly impressed with the video quality on the Complex DVD; I wasn't disappointed either, considering I wasn't expecting much from live footage and the DVD was only $10 at Best Buy. It does make good audio demo material though, as does their CDs. The DVD includes 5.1 DTS versions of 3 tracks on the flip side. The only other live concert DVD I have is AC/DC Live, and this DVD is considerably better IMO; better video, better sync, etc... although, I believe the BMG DVD is NOT anamorphic.

I haven't been to a huge number of concerts, but the original Complex Tour gave me goosebumps and chills up my spine over and over again. The light show and effects were fantasic and the music chocked full of tremendous energy. The music is a little on the heavy side, but I have yet to encounter someone that doesn't love it, or at least like it.

There are some videos and such under the multimedia section of their website. And, of course, you can always listen to snipets from the CDs on Amazon or similar stores.

Well I was thinking that sevelar people according to various forums use Bass heavy movies and scenes. I just enjoyed the sections I got to watch of the aforementioned dvd and it wasn't something that you would see on a normal basis. I liked the use of Surrond Sound also.

I actually made a Demo DVD features some very "demanding" scenes. It has scenes from LOTR, Spider-Man 2, Matrix, Star Wars, etc. Usually when I'm showing the system off I just ask the person to pick which segment they want to see.

thats a pretty good idea. I should DVDShrink something like that together.

Lately I have been using a feature on the Nine Inch Nails HD DVD. Its basically a sound test with a female voice saying "This is the front left speaker... this is the center speaker ... and this is the front right speaker, etc..." It ends with a big, well mixed orchestral sound. Its short and loud and shows off the speakers nicely.

Then I'll thrown in some trailers supplied by our good friend PirateHunter. Lately its been Bee Movie for its brightness and clarity, the full Simpsons trailer, and Sunshine for its great soundtrack.

There is also that Region 4 PAL Australian porn that I have that mainly takes place on the beach which has incredible picture quality which I only show to some people.

There's a long HT demo thread over at AVSforum. I just acquired discs 1-21, which are on my host. I'm still working on downloading them to my personal machine from there. Since I have the space and such on my host, I threw together a website for info and artwork. If anybody wants to check it out:
Site: http://htdemos.tjapkes.com
User: avsuser
Pass: demoinfo

The content is otherwise restricted. I believe the "fair use" argument really starts to loose strength when distribution of info and material becomes too open and public. Thus, it's hidden. I've only checked out disc 1 and parts of 2, but it's looking pretty good so far.

PM me for more info.

Interesting sidenote: Epic Music Video's AC/DC - Live at Donington DVD features "unproduced" audio of the show. There are numerous differences or "errors", including "new" feedback, crowded or weaker instrumentation, vocal variations, and distortion (on both the PCM 2.0 and Dolby 5.1 tracks) not heard on any prior release. The DVD isn't advertised as being any different, but it is.

Though I gotta admit the Epic DVD's transfer sucks. Artificating all over, chroma noise, dirt all over the negative.

disc to disc comparisons are great. i've been using the nine inch nails: beside you in time sd-dvd and bd to demo. its great just to have all the audio mixes and switching between the two to show the picture quality of high def. i've also used bjork: vespertine cd and dvd (which is in 5.1)...
