PEARL HARBOR: dts or not ?

I hope so. and no French and Spanish 5.1 on the first disc, this will ruin the 3hours video quality.

Being as it is 3 hours, I would think a DTS track may be unlikely. Maybe separate editions? (I know, I hate the thought as well...)

I don't know about DTS but there are supposed to two seprate DVD editions of the film. One with the PG-13 theatrical cut and another with a more graphic possibly R-rated director's cut.

They should release a version in full DTS with just the action scenes, then have an optional disc for the rest of the crap in the movie.

****Warning: Possible Spoilers Below****

This from USA Today:

Quote:
On DVD, 'Pearl Harbor' shows war's horrors

When a DVD of the director's cut of the successful yet critically bombarded war epic Pearl Harbor reaches store shelves on Jan. 15, 2002, perhaps it should be retiled "Michael Bay's Retribution."

An R-rated version of the story behind the Japanese air attack that launched U.S. involvement in World War II will be contained in a deluxe three-DVD set ($39.99). It's the one Bay wishes could have played in the theaters. When Harbor opened in May, he expressed regret that the horrors were muffled by a mandated PG-13, the family-friendly rating required by his agreement with Disney.

He (Bay) said then, "I would have liked to have made this movie more violent."

Now he has.
4 to 5 minutes of violence has been edited back in for the DVD release. More:
Quote:
"There will be more R-rated setups in the hospital, the kind of stuff that unsettles the stomach. You'll see that a 50mm round can cut a body in half.
Also:
Quote:
The language will be stronger, including more racial slurs against the Japanese.
The film has taken in nearly $400 million worldwide. Other DVD features:
Quote:
More than 12 hours of extras: audio commentary by Bay, the actors, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and members of the tech crew. A breakdown of the attack sequence. A segment on the boot camp endured by the cast.
The article doesn't say dick about the audio. Sorry.

I really wish Disney would stop sticking their nose into things. They've also ordered Pixar to tone down some elements of Monsters, Inc.

I did not like Pearl Harbor, but I'll rent this DVD to check out the features (there's even an intermission! I *did* like Hans Zimmer's music) Besides, maybe the film will be less painful to watch in the comfort of one's home.

What I don't friggin' understand is, there are two different DVD's that get released in December, The Commemoritive Edition and the Commemoritive Gift Set. Then a month later, they are going to release the Vista Series. This version will be three discs and feature all the goodies the first two versions offer

PLUS
Audio Commentary
Making Of...
Directors Cut of the film.

Why in the hell did they need to do three versions of this movie, only to include these three items in the third version? Why couldn't they just include this stuff in the initial release?

I don't get it.
This type of stuff makes me so angry!

I agree. It's ludicrous. Although, maybe they wanted to take advantage of the Christmas season, knowing it will sell a bundle. As for the third version, they weren't quite done with all the features (ie commentaries, documentaries, etc.) That's my guess anyways.

Still, it is rather ridiculous. In the future we'll have 4 different DVD versions of the same movie probably.

Disney = $$$ = evil

The only diffrence between the the first 2 releases is one will have a seperately packaged documentary which you can get now any way. The reason for the seperate director's cut is because it will be R-rated and far more violent that the theatrical. There is no way Disney would package the two together.

I am hoping the director's cut will have both the theatrical version and the DC. Either way, I'll be getting this disc for sure come January.

I think the reasoning for two releases is like someone said--one is R and one is PG-13. They will release the PG-13 in time for Christmas for young people and families, but leave the R version for collectors.

Annoying. But I will get the R version.

Personally, I don't understand the complaining, they're telling us far in advance what they're doing, so we can make our buying decisions on it..I fail to see where that's a bad thing. Buy the one you want, don't buy the other...easy enough.

Remember, this is a company we used to lambast for pulling out surprise special editions a few weeks after the standard came out, why are people criticizing them for it now when they're kindly telling us?

Another thing to consider is that the version in December will have the film on one disc, whereas the one in January will have the film spread across two discs (with the intermission) to accomodate the commentaries. This also could mean they would be making extra room for a DTS track, but I don't know. Of course, that's the PG-13 version, but if it's important enough for some people to have it on one disc, well, there you go.

I like the cover of the collector's edition better, since Ben Affleck's head is much smaller like I think it should be.

I haven't seen it, but I will probably rent the commemerative edition to see if I like the film, then if I like it enough, I'll buy the VISTA edition that comes out in January, which looks like it will redefine the word "loaded".
