Fight Club Dots...

Hi There, This will probably the record for a first post but this post is the main reason for joining. This is bugging me senseless for more than a year and I can't get a answer in the good old SA.

I have recently started to see something on my R1 cop of Fight Club. I know this DVD is highly praised for Audio and Video performance which is why I am so interested in this particular subject and I would appreciate any reply from you.

Please explain to me why do I get white dots on certain frames of a specific DVD. The white dots is 6 pixels big.
Use slow forward/back to see it, it will pop up somewhere in the given time frame, start from the beginning of the second and move through it.

1) time: (2:31) : As Tyler walks to the window, "Jack" turns his head to listen, as his head turns a white dot appears on his cheek.

2)time: (6:44) : The support group leader is on the left as the shot zooms out. About the width of his arm to the right and the width of two fingers (of actor) from the bottom of the screen another dot appears.

3)time: (15:40) : As Jack talks to Marla, there is a bald oke in the background, above his (baldy's) head (about the height of his head higher), just to the right another dot.

Hope that made sense. Please have a look as I would really love to know what this is. It is not my player, I've tried it on three different players, it is not the disk, I have seen two other disks with the exact same thing. Here are times that were easy to locate the dots for reference. I would say that there is about 2 dots per second throughout the movie.

The first I think is a point of moisture hitting some light just right. There also seems to be another one down lower in his neck right after it.

The second looks like some gunk on the film when the transfer was made.

I couldn't see the third.

If anything, I think it's just specks of grit on the film when it was transferred.

Welcome to the forum!

Hey!

(Spoiler Warning)

There is something wrong with my copy of Fight Club as well.

Early on in the movie as I am watching it a man pops up just for an instance in a few frames then disappears. It doesn't seem to be a part of the movie, it's as if it has been hacked. It only happens four or five times early on in the movie before the introduction of Brad Pitt's character. Once Brad Pitt's character is introduced, it stops.

Also very late in the movie, a naked man pops up for a few frames. Not only is he naked, you can see his penis. Shock Shock.

What is the meaning of this? Do I have a defective disk? Did a disgruntled Disney employee sneak into Fox and insert a naked man into the film stock used for the DVD pressings?

I would have used pause or slo-mo, but I have one of those basic DVD players that doens't have any fancy features like that.

Has anyone else experienced these glitches? I don't know if I should take the DVD back to the store for a refund or exchange, or if I should sue Fox or what.

I think those white dots were added in to give the impression that the movie had been beat up a little. That is my impression at least.

Thanks for the replies. Though I hoped there would be a more technical explanation for all of this... My thoughts also went in terms of the dots being added for effect but I couldn't see what that effect would be. Some suggestion was put forward on another forum that it could be a hardware problem... sorry!

If this results from transfer, I mean geez, that not great transferring is it? Especially for a disk that scored this high on.. well everything.

Well, it's a great transfer of the source. If the source is a little dirty to begin with, then a great transfer will 'transfer' it over.

That's true, it probably will, though I doubt that this wouldn't have been seen by the studio prior to release. I reckon SolidsnakeASS' expolanation makes the most sense at this stage... Still is REALLY frustrating to not be sure.

Almost every transfer has white dots here and there.

Yup. You should see some of the Anime transfers. Hairs, dots, burns, focus problems, grain. . .yeeee. Nasty. It happens. I'm sure for most of Fight Club, the dots were intentional. I'd look at my copy, but
