Any1 own the Criterion version of "Lambs?" If so, how is it?

Of course I'm talking about "The Silence Of The Lambs."

I have a feeling it's waaaaay better than the newly released 1, but since I've never seen it on DVD, if any1 out there has it...can u tell me if it's worth it?

Thanks.

The Criterion disc is worth it for the supplements alone. I won't regurgitate my views on a comparison of the two, has I have done so at length in another thread. In anutshell: I like the Criterion supplements better (especially the commentary), but I like the audio/video on the MGM version better. Of course, that's just an opinion.

The commentary on the Criterion SOTL is the single best commentary I've ever heard, and I've listened to many. It's very informative. It's got Demme, Hopkins, Foster, writer Ted Tally, and FBI agent John Douglas. I highly recommend the disc for the commentary alone.

I havn't seen/heard the new release, but I'm perfectly happy with my Criterion copy. I'l probably rent the mgm one to see the documentary, but that's it. If I was able to rent the criterion one, I probably would have bought the mgm one for picture sound, and rented the criterion one for the commentary, but oh well. I don't find myself longing for a 5.1 mix like I usually do with 2.0 tracks, and every dvd out there looks better than vhs (except for Scarface), so I'm happy there too.

U know, the general feedback I'm getting from this forum & my personal life is that the Criterion has better supplements but the MGM one has better pic/sound.

Oh well, as long as the Criterion's pic isn't really bad, I'll go w/that one. I'm a sucker for commentary...especially good one's.

The big knock on the Criterion one is, like most Criterion discs at the time, that it's non-animorphic. This may be of little concern now, but once I have an HDTV I'm going to be very upset. I'll probably just get both because, like everyone said above, the suplements are very good.

I agree with the general consensus. The Criterion DVD has fantastic extras, but I am not to fond of the transfer.

The MGM version is in the incorrect aspect ratio, therefore, it is not the correct way to view the film. The Criterion transfer was supervised by DP Tak Fujimoto, and therefore, is as the cimemetographer intended. Also, Demme liked the first audio mix of "Lambs", and opposed a 5.1 mix. Knowing all of that, and the fact that the Criterion disc has a great commentary track, and that it's relatively cheap, there shoudln't be any question about which version to get. RENT the MGM version for the new documentary, but stick with the Criterion version for viewing the film. Jonathan Demme is a drector who's very particular about his films, and seeing as he approved the Criterion version, well...

thanx,
Brook
