Spoiler-filled Menus & Artwork

Has anyone else noticed this trend? Consider "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" where ***Spoiler Alert*** in one menu we see Jen flying off the mountain at the end of the movie. And the original "Planet of the Apes" where the Statue of Liberty is prominently displayed on the front cover as well as the menus. Don't these things "spoil" the movie? I'd be pretty pissed off if I didn't know the plots and unknowingly boughts these titles and were shown the plot-spoiling images...I mean, can't they come up with any original images? Must they scrape the barrel? Your thoughts please!

I don't know if Planet of the Apes could be classified as a spoiler anymore.
But a lot of animated menus have some sort of spoilers:
Disc 2 of Unbreakable
Matrix
Superman
and those are just off the top of my head.
When I put in a disc of a movie that I have not seen, I like my menu's not too revealing. Lately, I have even been avoiding trailers, because some of those have revealed way too much (Cast Away anyone?)

The menu's for "Superman" and "Close Encounters" contain spoilers as well.

I totally agree. Most menu designs completely give away major points of the movie. I wouldn't mind if the menu's were themed around the movie ie. T2 : UE. Cool menu's but they don't give away the movie. BTW I also try to avoid seeing trailers if I can.

I have to agree on T2. The menu was awesome. And if it spoiled anything, it would have been the original teaser...which spoiled nothing.

Not 2 defend "menu spoilers", but I think the reason u c that is b/c the DVD developers r assuming that most ppl r BUYING the DVD's & not renting them, & since we're buying them, we must have seen the film already.

I know, I know, that's not always the case & its stupid, but what I'm saying is that's what I think they're thinking.

I just rented Hannibal, if the menu had spoiled the film I would've been pretty pissed off. So I agree with u guys, unfortunately, DVD makers aren't thinking about ppl who haven't seen the film yet. That's the only explanation I can think of.

What I do when I either rent or buy a film I haven't seen is I play the dvd immediately after putting it in my player...then afterwards I check out the menu's & extra features.

A DVD w/o special features is just an expensive VHS tape.

American Beauty's menu kinda spoils the impact of the beautiful scene it plays.

A related problem is something like Magnolia, where an unknowing first time viewer could ruin the big surprise of the film simply by playing the color bars to adjust their set. Outtakes are 'hidden' there. Heck, the same could be said for Boogie Nights. The big surprise at the end of the film could be ruined by watching the test footage within it's color bars section.

i felt really cheated when i excitedly went into the video store years ago to get the new VHS release of The Hudsucker Proxy, and there was Tim Robbins on the cover prominantly holding 'it'... (you know, for kids) later when i saw the film i realised what a huge part of the movie had been given away and i didnt enjoy the film as much as i could have.

btw, what was given away on the Big Trouble in Little China Disc?

Totally agree with the original post.

There are some Anime titles that give out far too many spoilers in the menus. On top of that, many openings to Anime shows contain spoilers or show you characters that don't show up in the show until many episodes later.

What a bitch.

The Big Trouble disk gives away the last set of the movie where the big action sequence takes place. The lines used for the scene selection also gives some plot points away.

The usual Suspects menu gives away part of the ending.... You may not pick it up, but if you're paying attention, it will really ruin the movie

I find your lack of faith disturbing...
