This thread has appeared before, just search back.
I will add that I recently listened to Eurythmics Peacetour in 5.1 and was impressed by the interesting mix - the background singers seem to be all around you (an interesting choice), the audience is correctly in the rear speakers...and anyway I liked it. Don Henley's disc has a meatier sound, probably because he was in a theater as opposed to an open air stadium. |

this is something that really depends on your taste. Mirrorball might be a great concert disk for Sarah McLachlan fans, but i'd probably be annoyed by it.
my favorite concert DVD is Stop Making Sense (Talking Heads, directed by Jonathan Demme I believe). Another good music disc is Gimme Shelter, though it isn't strictly a concert DVD. there is a good amount of concert footage in it though, and the Madison Square Gardens concert stuff is particularly great. also, the disc rocks. i haven't gotten a chance to really delve deep into the extras, but even the booklet is amazing. ------------------ deep in the heat of the bush... |

Though, as the world's most unredeemable U2 fanatic, I'm quite biased, I really think U2: RATTLE AND HUM is as good as it gets. My stepfather complains that the movie doesn't devote enough time in getting to know the band and their insights on their music, but I argue that U2's most lucid statements are made through their music, and any time Bono, The Edge, Adam or Larry try to provide any perspective beyond that, it seems to come off as much lesser than the whole. I love how RATTLE AND HUM just focuses on the emotional and creative power of U2's music, without any explanation, perspective, opinion or justification. That's what makes it so powerful and effective. Oh yeah, the disc sounds killer, too!

...my brother played on his great setup "John Fogerty-Premonition" which was really great, but when he put on "The Eagles-Hell Freezes Over" in DTS...it blew me away...a member out of each speaker...I could see why this is "THE" best DVD concert to listen to!!!...at least according to this music lover!

This is a great topic. In my humble opinion DVD is a great medium for concerts. It’s ability to deliver a great picture and more important great sound. With 5.1 channels available one can really create stunning atmosphere and put you not only in front of the stage (like good old stereo), but in the middle of it. It just beats me why those studio producers don’t exploit this more.
Now reading this tread, I am not getting the answer I am looking for. We all have different tastes, so lets put that aside and just concentrate on the technical side of the disk. For example: I am not an Eagles fan – not at all. But every time I pop “Hell Freezes Over” in my DVD I just, in a lack of the better words, melt. So lets do something like this for this tread: Eagles – Hell Freezes Over: Video: Nothing wrong with it Audio: (on the scale of 1 – 10) DTS – 10*, PCM – 10* Am I getting the point here (about the purpose of this tread)? |

With all due respect, mrkeeling, what makes you feel you have the right or authority to dictate the purpose behind a thread you didn't initiate? I assure you I don't mean to flame you, but what you tout as important in this thread is of secondary importance to me--I mean, who gives a proverbial rat's ass if a concert disc has great audio and/or video if the band/artist highlighted has no talent (which is subjective, yes, but no less worthy of discussion)? You know, DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS is a great looking and sounding film disc, but does that amount to a hill of beans when one discusses its overall merit?

I believe the title of this thread is: What's a great concert disk?. That's pretty open for interpretation and however people choose to define their responses (whether the disc is good technically and displays the wonder of DVD audio, or by the talent of the particular musical artist and the energy/emotion of the concert) is up to them.
Just because someone or some group is musically talented, doesn't imply they can exact the awesome technical capabilities of DVD technology. Conversely, just because a DVD is technically superior, doesn't mean the artist can play/compose music worth listening to. I think this thread has room for both kinds of replies. Unless the topic starter, OneofRyan, had any other intentions with this thread, I think people can and have responded in ways that fit under the topic header: What's a great concert disk?. Let's not turn this thread into a flame war over who "sucks" and who doesn't as a musical talent. ------------------ ..:: Eye | Moderator |

IF anyone in this tread (or forum at large) feels that my previous post was “a dictation”, I apologize.
What I was trying to point out is, to use Filmamkers words, I don’t give “a proverbial rat's ass” about other peoples opinion on band/artist talent. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind hearing it, but that will not determine what I do like and what I don’t. At the other hand, as all of you post in this forum, you must be DVD enthusiasts. And if you are (or as you are), your opinion on technical quality of the disk means a lot more to me, and it WILL influence my purchasing decision. No matter how much I do like the artist/band, there will be no enjoyment if the performance is killed with horrible sound and video. Again, this is MY opinion – I am not trying to dictate anything |

The new "Public Enemy: Live at The House of Blues" disk is pretty decent. Although, I wish an earlier tour had been documented rather than the new, Terminator X-less version of the band.
"Stop Making Sense" is a great film and concert disk. It's also packed with extras and two different 5.1 mixes. |

It sounds like you got that point from my post, so that's good... I have to say that John Denver has a couple of good concert disks out. Also, Paul Simon's disk is pretty darn good. We need a good Bruce Hornsby disk!

Here is one that is really special:
MUSIC FOR MONSTERRAT – It is a charitable concert for the Island of Montserat in The Royal Albert Hall. I guess one would expect more from sound - you can hardly hear Sting in “Money for nothing” and a few feedbacks’s here and there – but then again it gives you the “live” feeling. In general it is not bad, not bad at all. And where else can you see (and hear) Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton playing together with Phil Collins behind the drums. |

Montserrat is a little island in the Caribbean Sea (somewhere between Puerto Rico and Venezuela). It had a very popular recording studio used by many popular musicians. When the island was devastated by a volcanic eruption, all of them gathered together for the charitable concert.

Jerry Herman's LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, one of the best recordings of a full orchestra in a concert setting, and one of the few tributes to a Broadway composer that uses original orchestrations and performers. The disc was pressed by Varese Sarabande once and never repressed. The disc, surprisingly, is one of the very few DVD's I have ever seen that has no Dolby Digital track...only PCM stereo. But the performances and sound don't get much better than this.
Another great disc is the import from Hong Kong (yes, an actual LEGALLY LISCENSED disc from Asia from Panorama Video) is Julie Andrews in Concert. The disc is flawless in visuals and stunning in 5.1, with no subtitles and no region code). Not easy to find. It surprises me that her concert never got an American laserdisc release (only Japanese) and is still egnored for dvd. |

My picks have to go for
All the Metallica DVDs, Metallica has been a great DVD supported and S&M and Cunning Stunts show it, as does the remastered Cliff'em All Motley Crue: Lued, Crued and Tatood. Anamorphic picture, good sound (not as good as the Metallica dvds) and cool ass supplements |

Regarding 'Gimme Shelter' and the infamous anti-Woodstock death at Altamont while the Rolling Stones were performing, do any of you know anything about George Lucas' involvement? The end of the film, including the Hell's Angels trouble, shows the Stones boarding a helicopter with either KFRC or KTVU (sorry, it's been a while since I've seen the film....KRFC is a San Francisco Bay Area radio station and KTVU is a Bay Area television station). The concert takes place in the Bay Area. And the closing credits list 'George Lucas' as a cameraman. I assume this is 'the' George Lucas since ILM is based in Marin County and George Lucas has a long Bay Area history (ex: American Graffiti was filmed there in the early 70's). Does anyone know if George Lucas has ever discussed being at the Stones' show and witnessing the murder?
As for great concert DVD's, I also like 'Hell Freezes Over' and James Taylor's 'Live at the Beacon.' |
