Sales charts mystery
Here's something I don't understand...
A movie comes out in the theatres and stinks up the place. It gets trashed by the critics and bombs utterly. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY says it's good. Then it comes out on DVD and... bam, it tops the sales charts. Sometimes for weeks in a row. "Driven" is the latest example, but certainly not the only one. How does this happen? Do people just buy ANYTHING that comes out, whether they know anything about it or not? |

I think it has a lot to do with clever marketing. The biggest offender (if you want to use that word) is Warner. They tend to price their box office turkeys a bit lower than most regular titles, and spend quite a bit to promote them (at my local A&B sound, there is an entire rack display devoted to Driven- the DVD is also under $20 when most new DVD's are priced around $25). They also tend to load their duds with some pretty decent features, if all you care about is quantity. It's pretty sad when the special features on Battlefield Earth are better than the features on a blockbuster like the Mummy Returns.
