Hitchcock on DVD

I was thinking about going all out and buying the following DVDs

Frenzy
Rope
The Man Who Knew Too Much
Vertigo
Psycho

From what I've come to understand, the collectors editions of these are pretty great.

Also, Criterion is releasing Rebecca and Notorious. I pick up most criterion disks... but I'm curious about those other DVDs... anyone have them?

By all means, grab VERTIGO and PSYCHO. NOTORIOUS is just about my favorite Hitchcock film. Also pick up STRANGERS ON A TRAIN and REAR WINDOW.

stiles, just a note--from what I've heard, the video quality for THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH and, to a slightly lesser degree, SHADOW OF A DOUBT looks pretty sub par, though the others are up to snuff. Since better versions won't be forthcoming for a while, I'll be grabbing these up sooner or later, but I just thought I'd warn you not to set the bar too high for those two titles...

Ernest Hemingway once wrote, "The world is a fine place and worth fighting for." I agree with the second part...

A curious mix of the best and worst in motion picture entertainment--that's right, it's Filmmaker's DVDTracker list!

North by Northwest is out as well, with a very fantastic transfer and nice supplements.

I agree that you should definitely pick up Vertigo, Psycho and North By Northwest. I would also suggest that you pick up the Criterion version of The Lady Vanishes if you haven't already. It's early Hitchcock but it is incredibly well-constructed and a lot of fun to watch.

Also for early Hitchcock: Criterion's The 39 Steps. I don't personally own it, but I have seen the film about six times on a very bad-quality VHS and still enjoyed it thoroughly. I understand the transfer is quite spotless.. for a film made in 1935 anyways.

I have The Birds and the transfer is fantastic. I highly recommend it. I plan to pick up Vertigo next myself. I heard Rebecca is to be rereleased soon with a much better transfer and extras ... can anyone confirm this?

All the above mentioned are great.
Hitchcock also had some that were overlooked and underpraised:

-Frenzy: well-made and more graphic Hitchcock
-Marnie: Lots of Freudian symbolism in this psychological film. Good Hermmann score.
-Topaz: I loved this one. It felt like a foreign film for some reason, but very exciting with some good ol' Hitchcock flair.

Maybe you better rent these first if you haven't seen them. The reason they are overlooked is because they weren't as groundbreaking and may not suit everyone's tastes.

39 Steps and Lady Vanishes were truly great as well.

Wow I find it odd that Nobody but Stiles mentioned "Rope".

I love Good ol' Jimmy S.

It all ways scares me when I try to figure out my Fav Hitchcock film, because I realise how amazing he was. So many GREAT films.

Ah yes, Rope. I forgot about that one. I loved it too. I like to think of it as one of his most experimental films without even looking like one.

Where's Lifeboat anyways? -- must be under another studio or something.

"Rebecca" and "Notorious" are both great, and will be spectacular DVDs. I have them both pre-ordered, and will be doing the same for "Spellbound" once I can. "Frenzy" is probably Hitchcock's most underrated film. Despite the fact it doesn't have the "classiness" of other Hitchcock flicks, it's still great, a cut above other horror films. I keep meaning to get both of the big Universal Hitchcock sets, but they're so expensive!

"Lady Vanishes" is also brilliant, and Criterion did an excellent job cleaning it up.

Thanx,
Brook

I have Rear Window, which is great movie and disc. I soon will get Vertigo and Psycho, which I absolutely love, but I just with Psycho was anamorphic. Oh well, I guess I can't have everything. I have an old VHS of Rope, but recently I've had a renewed appreciation. There are many other Hitchcock flicks that I'd love to rent, but in my small town they just don't have them.

Rope. I love it. First of Hitchcock's colour films and his first film with Jimmy Stewart, one of the greatest director/star collaborations of all time.

Also it's a really wacky movie.

While watching "Rope" many years ago, I realized that there was a very sexual bond between the two murderers. I asked a friend about it, and he said it was actually based on a real life case where the two were homosexual lovers. I think it's great that the film was able to express that without being overt about it.

Thanx,
Brook

It was based on the notorious case of Leopold & Loeb, which shocked the nation in the 1920s. The same story also inspired COMPULSION starring Orson Welles.

I've got Criterion's 39 STEPS, and it's a very good disk, lots of good extras and of course an excellent film.
Sadly it does suffer some bad artifacting in places, mainly on bright objects that wobble up and down, but the disk's still well worth having.
There's a lot of Hitchcock available in the UK if you can play PAL r2 disks.
