What is the Best DVD?
What DVD would you say has the complete package:
Visual/Sound/Supplements I would have to say it's a tie... Star Wars: The Phantom Menace because the sound and supplements make up for any scenes with not so excellent picture. Gladiator because the visual and sound are some of the best and so-so supplements. |

Easy answer. One's best DVD is their favorite movie. No video or audio transfer, no really good documentary, or different camera angles, can rival the greatness of the joy of being able to watch a movie you love.

![]() But from a technical point... I can't comment on Phantom Menace yet(Damn it to hell!), but Gladiator is a nice package. Although, Snow White is quite a technical achievement, from the transfer and supplements, to the menu. ------------------ Sean I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve. |

From a purly technical standpoint (Transfer, sound, supplements) I would have to go with Fight Club or T2:Ultimate Edition.
However, chalk me up as another person who agrees with Soggy (never thought that would happen ), so the best disc for me is Requiem for a Dream.------------------ I am the eater of worlds, and of children. And YOU are next! |

I'd probably say, Superman: The Movie, Fight Club and X-Men are the best of the ones I have. I haven't seen SW: TPM DVD yet, or Snow White.
I like some of the supplements on the Criterion's The Rock, especially the Dos and Donts of Gunplay. Very interesting. EnriqueH |

Why do you have this hardheaded notion that a person must love either independent films or mainstream films? There's room in my collection for both. Also, it's not that I take issue with the fact that you don't like mainstream films, but with the fact that you insult the intelligence of those who do. You seem uanble to grasp the concept that people have differnt tastes, and that people whose tastes diverge from your own are not supid because of that. You also seem unable to conceed that although YOU may like a film, that does not automatically qualify it for classic status. You consistently bomb threads about mainstream movies, offering no insight and not backing up your opinions with well reasoned arguements other than "The Mummy Returns was stupid. How could you like it, it's so stupid." Pretty childish. It's like purposely going to a resturaunt that you don't like and complaining about the food. You don't like mainstream movies, don't post on threads about them. There's nothing hypocritical about being open to enjoying all kinds of films, and everything asshole about putting people down simply because of the films they enjoy. And oh yeah, nobody asked you. P.S. Poppa- sorry for contributing to the derailing of you thread, but I just had to respond. To bring it back on track, I would also include Star Wars: TPM as a favorite disc in BOTH the technical and enjoyment qualifications ------------------ I am the eater of worlds, and of children. And YOU are next! |

This is my last off topic post, I PROMISE!!!
Chunkblower, all I really want is for people to know that you don't have to limit your viewing to stuff like "Legally Blonde". And yes, I think people that do limit themselves to mainstream movies are not all that smart. It's the same with the computer industry. People just buy a Windows computer becuase that's what everyone else has. People who make an educated chocie and chose to go mainstream I really have no problem with, but it saddens me when I see the best movies of the year making absoloutley no money and all the idiodic crap they play in the multiplexes making hundreds of millions just becuase they spent a lot of money on big special effects or Sandra Bullock's name. Sure, something like "Miss Congeniality" isn't all that bad, but it can't hold a candle to some of the brilliant (and far funnier) comedies that get released in the art theatres. A lot of these movies mainstream moviegoers would really love, and they'd start to wonder what they ever saw in Hollywood pictures. Imagine if movies like "Mononoke Hime", "The Closet", and "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" had even been given a chance in the multiplexes. People would have LOVED them! Not to mention "Requiem for a Dream", a movie so incredibly amazing, but multiplexes wouldn't show it just becuase it was rated NC-17. Complete bullshit. Should we show a movie that actually means something? One with a well thought out, original plot? One where a very limited crew worked their asses off just for love of the picture? One where the director and writer were actually speaking from their heart? One that might have controversial subject matter? No, I think we'll just run that guy from "Airheads" around with some wrestling star, spend a small fortune on cheesy looking computer effects, and people will go see it becuase it's the big movie that everybody's gonna go see! I agree that movies like "The Mummy" need to exist, as there's some people who simply can't deal with an intelligent film, and these kinds of movies are good to watch just for laughs. But the point is, there are so many people who have never even heard of any independent films, and think that the shallow, brainless stuff played in the multiplexes is all there is in the world of cinema. Without arthouses, we probably wouldn't even have NC-17 rated films, or even be able to see films from other countries. So I guess I don't have too much of a problem with you, Chunkblower, I just feel bad that the best movies out there hardly get seen by anyone. Oh, and NOW.... I'll get back ON--TOPIC!!! I think that one of the best DVDs is Criterion's "Peeping Tom". The quality of the film is just amazing for something from 1960, it look brand new! The audio is crisp and clear, and tehre wasn't really a 5.1 mix needed for this film, so I'm glad that one wasn't included. The extras are most wonderful too!
