Who here hates two-sided DVD's and why?
I hate them cause they are hard to read. I have the DVD of "V" and being that the title of the thing is just one letter,, it is quite hard to read. Also, they seem to get dirty easier,, Maybe that's just me who thinks that though. Another thing, is that they are easy to put in your case or keep case/etc. incorrectly. i.e. With the crappy full-frame tiny ring label showing. Well, this is just a pet peeve topic, but let me know. Alot of classics deserve to have some cool artwork on the discs. Even Exorcist-Special Edition is two sided! That is a crime! Thanks!

Oh yeah, Mykel, how is the Exorcist Special Edtion? I never got around to seeing the new version. I wonder which is better overall: 25th anniversary edition or the "version you've never seen."?? |

the scratching is annoying, but i find that if i keep them in their case they're just fine. and if i need to put them somewhere else (a CD binder, for instance) i just make sure the widescreen side is the protected side.
i don't really mind double sided discs, though, because the keep OAR alive. if every film had to have seperate widescreen and p&s versions, we'd probably see quite a few more full frame only releases. ------------------ deep in the heat of the bush... |

I'm finding lettering that small harder and harder to read as I get older, and that's a pain. It's getting to the point where I need a magnifying glass near the player so I can read the disc. (Don't laugh -- it'll happen to you too.... cue the scream and 50s horror movie music
)Outside of that, though, I don't have a problem if it's for additional information (like T2) or the WS/PS presentation choice, and if it helps keep costs down, so much the better. Flippers are another matter. Unless the film is very long (like a TV miniseries) I'd rather have the whole thing on one side of the disc. ------------------ Trust me -- I know what I'm doing. ) Now that they've repackaged the movie with the paperboard slip-on, they've stuck with the flipper, and the price is back up to ~$30. |

Personally, I hate over-packaged, over-priced double-DVD releases. I'll take a single double-sided DVD over something like the "Fight Club" package any day. Don't get me wrong - I love the "Fight Club" movie, but I HATE HATE HATE the packaging it comes in. Give me lower prices and double-sided DVDs any day!

I typically have no problem with two sided discs. In fact, once I realized that information can be on both sides of the disc, I began to wonder why they're not both always used. I hate double disc sets and their obese packaging. It's done simply for greater visability and to dupe users into thinking they're getting more material.
I'm also not against spreading the feature out over two sides if that means better quality, but ONLY if it means better quality. In a perfect world we wouldn't even need the disc. But since it's there I don't see any reason why they shouldn't use both sides. |

The only problem I have with flippers is mislabeling. The worst examples of mislabeling I can think of are 13 Ghosts and The Stand. On 13 Ghosts, I had watched half of the movie not realizing that it was the non- Ilusion-O version even though I put the side that was labled as Ilusion-O up. That made me mad. On the Stand, it isn't really mislabled as much as non-labled. They didn't put which side it is on the little band around the middle and I ALWAYS seem to put in the wrong side. Grrr.

My problem with doublesided DVDs is partly the fault of the case...and come to think of it this effects single sided discs as well:
Sometimes the spindle is located in the center of the case, sometimes near the bottom. Different cases from different suppliers have different styles. After a film, the room is relatively dark, and sometimes when I take the DVD and try to put it back into its case I don't notice what style case it is, and the spindle hits the playing surface of the disc because I aimed too high or too low. If the inside of the case weren't car-tire black, or if I had more lights on, this wouldn't be a problem. The silver-plastic cases are nice. |

Don't really mind the two sided disc. My preference is a two-disc set in packaging that isn't double-wide (i.e. Gladiator). But it's never going to influence whether or not I purchase something. Like TheJeffy said, "It's what's inside that counts."

I don't really care one way or the other except when it comes to renting from Netflix. I can certainly understand from a business perspective, but I hate that they have now separated the rental of the feature from the rental of the bonus disc. Not only does renting, say, The Phantom Menace now count as two movies out, but you're never assured that you'll get the two discs at the same time. I like to watch the bonus material right after the film (which I'm sure is not unusual), and in the worst case scenario, the bonus disc ships but the feature disc is out of stock.

will3d -- here's a solution. most living rooms come with this special feature called electricity, which is often used to light the area. simply flip the switch at the entrance to the room, and it will become illuminated. you can then remove the disc from your player and put it into the case safely, regardless of what kind of case it is.

but if you've already watched the movie, what mood is there to ruin? you're gonna have to turn on the lights someday. if you need a minute to be in the "mood" of your dark living room, whatever, leave the disk in the player till you're ready to turn the lights on...

Personally, if it were up to me, I would have disks one and three of the Brazil Criterion collection as a double sided DVD-18 and have disk two as a second supplimental DVD and put the two disks in one thin double amaray.
Likewise, I would take (for example) Lethal Weapon 1 & 2 and make it a double sided disk and then do the same with 3 & 4. Then, I would put these two disks in a double amaray and have the entire series in one thin case. |

I'd rather the dual discs, and I dont mind the large packaging. Altho those Amaray cases, come in normal size and hold the 2 discs, so perhaps all manufacturers should take a leap from this. But the worst double sided disc has to be the movie flipper. Out here in R4 land, we have a few of those. I ended up getting a multi region player, mainly so I didnt have to flip Starship Troopers. Just before the 1st battle, youd have to get up and flip. Same as the Rock, & Face/Off. All Touchstone Home Video releases. Thankfully these are being slowly removed.

It always bothers me. I love disc art, and I think to even include the pan&scan version as an option is worng.
