Does anyone actually like Easter Eggs?

I think Easter Eggs are really stupid. To me, they are like music cd's with "hidden songs" on the end, that you have to sit thru minutes of silence sometimes to get to. Just list it with the rest of the stuff. I do not want to have to consult some website to figure out how to access some extra feature, especially when they usually stink.

They're extremly annoying and when you find out about them you have to go through all these stupid little tricks to get them. It's a ridiculous idea.

In my day you didn't have to spend hours punching in little codes to get yer extras. There were none. And we liked it.

Sometimes we would just sit and watch the snow pattern on an unrecorded VHS tape.

Bwah, DVD! who needs it?!

I have to agree, easter eggs are annoying!
Give me the darn features...if they're worth having. Or at least make them easy to find (like Shrek's gumdrop buttons)...no don't make them easy...drop them! I don't like looking for them, I don't like checking the internet for them, nothing!

While I usually enjoy an extra surprise feature, I kinda wish everything was just clearly labeled.

I rarely find them on my own, so I often wonder how many I might be missing on my discs that aren't mainstream enough to be included in the online lists.

Just make them worth the hunt. I could give a rat's ass about DVD credits. At least the Phantom Menace had outtakes during the credits. I like bloopers, but I hate when they show an actor tripping over the same dialoge 10 times in a row.

Finding the easter eggs on a DVD can be good clean fun, unless I try to access the third version of T2 on my DVD player and it doesn't work and I throw a hissy fit...oh well. I didn't know there were easter eggs on some of my DVDs until I read about them months later! Aye, easter eggs are an amusing addition to a DVD's overall presentation.

I don't mind easter eggs so long as they are the type where you only have to like move to the right to highlight a hidden picture, then press enter.
But some are getting a little too complicated to find like where you have to enter in some code at a certain screen then move right and left, then stand on one foot and jump up and down while kicking your cat with the other foot at midnight.
Those are a little frustrating.

Hello

I think you'll find that my first post on this thread is what's known as an, 'observation' rather than a complaint. Perhaps we should have a link to a dictionary here.

Finally, Easter Eggs are meant to be fun, they are meant to a little something extra to search for and the exercise is meant to be FUN. None of them are that well hidden, if you need to resort to looking them up on the net then perhaps you need an injection of happy hormones or something to halt the miserabilists that appear to be taking over.

I don't even try to find them myself, but if I read somewhere the info how to find them I'll check them out.
But who really cares to find an easter egg where you can find DVD CREDITS ..

Oh, wait.... That's two words.

Tyler, if you don't stop with the insults, the first two words in my post will apply to you.

They are okay. I am not smart enough to find them on my own though. There's probably tons of easter eggs hidden on the hundreds of video games I have bought over the last 12 years. Zelda for N64 has enough little things for an eternity.

The first part was in reference to Easter eggs on DVD, I got on a tanget with video games because they do the same thing.

So, yes DVD easter eggs are cool to the point I can find them on my own. There's no telling what is hidden out there on all our discs.

I would hardly think of this as an insult - perhaps a pertinent comment but certainly not an insult and I think it clear that I did not mean it as such. Aren't we being a tad oversensitive here? However, if you wish to suspend me for calling people miserable, by all means... But I do think that this is a rather miserabilist thread and I shall stick by that.

But threatening to ban me for this after all the heated exchanges that I have read here seems pretty extreme, even to me.

I mean, come on guys I may as well start a thread entitled:

"Does Anyone really like special features?"

I think special features are stupid as they take up valuable disc space that could be used for the transfer and they take me ages to plough through of a weekend and waste my valuable time. I also have to look up on the net what special features are on a disc in a review (such as those on DVDFile) and I would much rather read about something else instead...you get the gist.

Anyway, I haven't posted such a thread but the bait is there and this is a baiting thread if ever there was. Chill out guys - other users don't seem to be offended - and it cerainly wasn't meant in a nasty spirit - hence the smileys!

Well, there are no smilies in the first post and the second one has one so that you can seemingly justify questioning our intelligence.

Whatever. For someone who's most recent posts seems to be mostly complaining/scolding ones, I think you should reevaluate just who the " miserable load of old gits" really are.

Tyler, for the most part, I agree with you, and I hate to kick you when you're down, but I can't resist the chance to play devil's advocate. You said, "Finally, Easter Eggs are meant to be fun, they are meant to a little something extra to search for and the exercise is meant to be FUN. None of them are that well hidden, if you need to resort to looking them up on the net then perhaps you need an injection of happy hormones or something to halt the miserabilists that appear to be taking over", to which I must reply, have you checked out the outtakes Easter Egg for STAR WARS, EPISODE I?! Now who would just automatically assume, oh, if I go to the Options screen and type in 11, Enter, 3, Enter, 8 and Enter, I bet I'll find some hidden stuff! I agree, Easter Eggs are cool, and my sad ego enjoys knowing about them when the general DVD fan doesn't, but they're often not as simple as point-and-click...

Filmmaker,
I agree with the SW easter egg comment. I for one didn't know about it until I read about it on a site. I think they are cool but if you never know about them, they are nothing. I tried to enter the 1138, it took me a while because I didn't realize how deliberate you had to be and wait in between each button press. I found it more of a pain than fun.

There's another way to get to the outtakes that's much much easier than the "1138" method...

It Depends On What The Easter Egg Is. If It's Dumb Junk Like A Commercial For The CD Then It's Annoying, But If It's Like A Trivia Game Or A Good Amount Of Commentary OR Something In That Sort It's Worth It.

------------------
I bought a pack of gum yesterday - Bubblicious - Watermelon. I know everyone's saying "Hold off, there's gonna be a special edition with remastered flavor and at least it won't be in that awful paper wrapper." But you know what, I figured it's worth it. I mean if it's not that good, I can always auction off the rest of the pack on eBay. And then if Bubblicious revisits the Watermelon gum, I can use the money to re-purchase the upgrade.

Watch Title 3 on the DVD.

Great site for Easter Eggs: www.DVDReview.com
They have an extensive Hidden Features section.

I understand the "coolness" factor of Easter Eggs, and they moved over to DVD from computer software, but then they were usually just splash screens with jokes or lists of the programmers who worked on the software.

With DVDs, often the hidden features are pretty cool, and it's kind of off putting to think there's something cool hidden on the disc (that you paid for) but you can't find it.

Some people don't want to play games to see the content of the DVDs. If only the people who found them fun knew about the existence of an Easter Egg, then it wouldn't really matter. But obviously, many people who don't like playing these games know about them. They just want to see what they paid for. I don't think that's an unreasonable point of view.

Hi 1138

Perhaps you haven't been reading my recent posts then - you might find if you did that the vast majority are very positive and indeed one might say enthusiastic - just see my thread on FF as proof positive.

As for the rest, well I think that you guys are missing the point of Easter Eggs. Disc producers don't sit there thinking, "I know, let's really piss people off by putting some really cool features into an easter egg format". These are meant to enhance the interactivity of the format and act as a surprise for the dedicated few who hunt for them - hunting is the key word here - hence the title Easter Egg, they're not called thus because they're covered in chocolate and make you fat they're called this because you're meant to hunt for them and it's supposed to be fun. There are numerous resources that tell you how to access them if you can't be bothered to join in the hunt so I really don't see the problemo. I think it would be sad to see these little extras (and they are always little) go. Just my opinion.

I don't like easter eggs.
If I want to play a game, I pop in Monkey Island or Grim Fandango, thank you very much.

If they would list the hidden material and left you with the challenge to find it, I think I could accept that.
But if I don't know what to look for, if anything, it annoys me.

Plus they have way too much cholesterine

I love easter eggs.

It adds an element of surprise to the purchase and provides additional extras.
