Which Dario Argento film to choose?

After I rented Suspiria and saw it for the first time last month, I bought it on DVD before I even returned the video. Sadly, that is the only Dario Argento film that is available at my local Hollywood Video.

So now I am thinking of making a blind purchase. I have the following to choose from, from recently released Anchor Bay titles:

Terror at the Opera Limited Edition
Dario Argento collection: Inferno/Phenomena
Dario Argento collection2: Demons/Demons2
Dario Argento collection3: Tenebre/Deep Red.

Remember, I would be spending about $25 on whichever I choose (if I choose at all, that is), so which would I be more pleased with making a blind purchase, and having only seen Suspiria (and Dawn of the Dead if that counts).

Soggy Bagel's Revenge, I find myself looking in your direction on this one.

In my opinion, "Tenebrae" is Argento's BEST film. The last 20 minutes will blow you away. I recently held a film screening of it for my charity film festival, and everyone who attended thought it was wonderful, and quite scary to boot!

"Profondo Rosso" is probably his best technical work, and the most important film he made.

If you really want something weird and different, though, go with "Phenomena"! It was the first Argento film I saw and it completely changed my outlook on cinema, a GREAT film.

Thanx,
Brook

One more thing...

Please refer to "Opera" as "Opera", not the stupid American title, "Terror at the Opera".

Thanx,

Sorry, just referring to it as the cover says, and what my old Video Watchdog magazine calls it. The article in the mentioned magazine does talk about some of the cuts that were made to the American release of Opera, so I understand where you're coming from. But if the Anchor Bay edition is supposedly uncut, why does it still have the American title? ...hmmm

Thanks for the suggestions! If only Tenebrae and Phenomena were in the same collection, I'd be set.

I'd suggest Inferno, but all are worthy.

I would not suggest the Demon movies since he did not direct them.

I would have to say go for the Tenebrae/Deep Red double pack. Next to Suspiria, I'd say Deep Red is his best film. Tenebrae was good, and a worthy purchase, but not up to the standards of the Suspiria and Deep red. I bought Opera blind and must say I was disapointed- it was pretty weak in the plot department, even for an Argento film.

So now it is down between the collection#3 (Tenebre/Deep Red pack), or Opera.
But then again, Phenomena features Jennifer Connely.

This is soooo hard!
