WILLY WANKA'S WILLY..

I've been having thoughts recently about WILLY WANKA AND THE CHOCALTE FACTORY..I had the orginal DVD release and after watching twice got rid of it. I saw it on television recently and have come to the conclusion that WILLY WANKA is the most fucked up movie ever made.

What the hell where they smoking? This is supposed to be a kid's movie? Think about it, a freaky guy living alone with creepy green dudes called the UMPALUMPA'S who do nothing but sing, children who are told not to do something, suffer EXTREME consequences. WANKA takes everyone on some weird boat ride that turns out to be an ACID TRIP. WALL PAPER that tastes like fruit, I kid trapped in a television and a brat named VEROCA ASSAULT.

This is really disturbing and later on it has a happy ending where the poor kid win's the creepy place for the rest of his life, what fun to live with strange green people!

Yeah, sure, and we all just know that "Puff the Magic Dragon" is about marijuana. Alice in Wonderland is another movie featuring an acid trip.

Sometimes its possible to interpret things much differently as adults, isn't it?

STYPEE, did you see that bit on Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago about the upcoming DVD? It seems Gene Wilder may have been onto your interpretation.

The answer is simple...it's NOT a kid's movie. That's just where the stores insist on putting it.

Read "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", or especially some of Roald Dahl's short stories, and I doubt you'll think of "Wonka" as a kid's movie anymore.

Heh.. I can't remember what show this was from, either MadTV or SNL, but they were doing a parody sketch about the re-release DVD. Part of it was an outake where Willy Wonka was singing that song where they're going through that trippy tunnel and he stops and says "Whoa wait... Isn't this a kid's movie"... I thought it was quite amusing.

I read those as a kid along with seeing the film. Maybe I should give it a second look.
Also, on my trip to NYC last year I picked up a collection of Lewis Carrol's (sp?) stories. Had to give that a second look after my g/f got me the Alice in Wonderland DVD (or should I say Disney DVD).

Lewis Carol used ether.. that is why his books are a crazy trip.

Any one ever read Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator? Now that is a cool book.

Did anybody watch the featurette on the DVD? The director said he made the movie using adult humar because he believes that kids are smarter then adults give them credit, and they would understand all the adult jokes and such. That's why the movie has an "adult" feel to it.
He started off the interview by saying "his daughter (who was a little girl at the time)came to him after she read the book and said he should make the movie. I'm not directly quoting but that was jist.
It is a kids movie, but told in an adult style.

Sure did. I've read most of Roald Dahl's books, including the ones he wrote for "adults".

Yeah same here. I loved his biography of when he was a child called "Boy." He definitely lived a interesting life, and was a brilliant author.
