Read the following page, especially the DVD update section at the very bottom:

Dude, that was probably the best link anyone's ever given at this website. If I wasn't at work I could have spent all day there. That list of different films corresponding to different aspect ratios etc. was just f**kin' awesome.

Thanks.

I stumbled onto The Widescreen Museum a while back and was amazed. It's an incredible wealth of information and well worth a bookmark on any filmgoer's browser.

One interesting note in the referenced article, is that Patton has been released twice on DVD, the second time in anamorphic with somewhat better framing than the first. I did a little checking and found that the newer, better transfer seems to be in the lesser package. The original was two discs and included Jerry Goldsmith's original score. The second one has the banner "Fox War Classics" at the top and is only one disc. It's missing the original score, but it has the newer copyright and notes "anamorphic" next to the OAR on the back. Better yet, it's cheaper. Best Buy has the newer one for $14.99, while the older one is $19.99. Just FYI.

Your eyes might be playing tricks on you because the new release is the exact same release of the first Patton sans the second disc. What might be confusing is that the first release isn't labeled anamorphic even though it is.

While on the subject of the Fox war classics, I really wish Fox had remastered The Longest Day. The original release was improparly framed, non-anamorphic and only had a few trailers on it. I was hoping for a special edition (or at least an anamorphic print) but it looks like that'll never happen.

The only difference between the two discs is the inclusion of a documentary on Patton's life. I picked up the older one for the extra documentary.

FYI.

Looks and sounds great for an older movie.

Actually, I haven't seen the newer disc, but the article referenced above at the Widescreen Museum makes note of the remaster. If they're wrong, then it's my error in not checking it out personally. Thanks, though.

The remaster they were talking about was for the original DVD. The article was probably written a while back.

Anyway, if anyone's going to get Patton, I'd recommend the original since you get an excellent documentary and the isolated score for only a few bucks more. The re-release is just to try to cash in on veteran's day.

Sorry to be MIA for a few days, but I've been sick at home and my computer is on the fritz. I just wanted to respond to Chris OC's confusion regarding the two DVD releases of PATTON and confirm what Fluffmygarfield has said. Both DVD releases' transfers are identical and anamorphic (though the original does not say such on the packaging), and the article at the Widescreen Museum is referencing the original 2-disc release--that article is over a year old. The aspect ratio comparison it is making is between the 2-disc DVD and the old LaserDisc transfer...

Oh yeah, and (though the transfers are exactly identical) I second the vote for buying the two-disc version, if for no other reason than to possess Jerry Goldsmith's phenomenal isolated score, any cinephile's dream...
