DVD-Audio

Lately I've been looking at dvd-audio, and something confuses me. On the back of every disc I see it says something like that it will play in Advanced Resolution Stereo, Advanced Resolution Surround, and Dolby Digital (or DTS, of course depending on the disc). Will the Advanced Resolution modes play out of a normal DVD video player, or do I need some other sort of player to make those work? And is there any quality difference between the AR surround and the DD/DTS surround?

Is there a site anywhere that explains all of this? Thanks.

I believe the enhanced are the ones that require a DVD Audio player. The DD or DTS is for regular DVD players.

I've been looking at DVD audio as well...and wondering. So, do DVD audio discs have tracks that will play on a regular DVD player?

The Dolby Digital tracks are supposed to play in all DVD-Video players. The other two tracks require a DVD-Audio player. I'm not sure how much of an improvement the enhanced resolution tracks offer. For now I'm satisfied with the DD tracks. I only have 5 disks so far: STP, Metallica, Blue Man Group, The Doors and Bjork but the sound quality is substantially better than the cd versions of all 5 albums (in my opinion).

Here is a good site to clear all the confusion. http://www.digitalaudioguide.com/

Advanced resolution should be PCM sound compressed by lossless compression – so it should outperform both DD and DTS.
But bare in mind that all the processing of DVD-audio is done on the player side (it has build in decoder) and then send to receiver/amp/preamp through 6-channel analog output.

Here's another good place to read up on it:

Did you ever get to see the Blue Man Group live? I did in Vegas and have been wondering how the DVD audio disk is. Is it worth buying?
