What Are Your Guilty Pleasures?

Everybody has a favorite film they know they shouldn't like. On paper, these films are often inept, badly acted, incoherent, etc. and don't rightfully deserve any attention, but damn it, we can't help but enjoy watching them. I must confess that I too enjoy certain films that I know aren't very good:

Lifeforce (1985) This is one f---ed up film! Naked space vampires, Halley's comet, zombies and very, very, VERY bad acting can all be found in this Tobe Hooper insanity. Part of the enjoyment is watching so many highly respected British actors--including a pre-Star Trek Patrick Stewart--shout out their lines as if they were suffering from Tourette's Syndrome. Steve Railsback, in a career-killing performance, creates one of the most inept protagonists ever seen on film. At least the special effects are pretty trippy. Little wonder why Cannon Films went bankrupt a few years later...

Tank Girl (1995) There's no plot, a hodgepodge of songs selected by Courtney Love, Ice T as a Kangaroo man, erm...at least it has some snazzy animated sequences and, well, that's about it. I still think Lori Petty is perfectly suited for the role, but isn't that Malcolm McDowell (!) and isn't he playing the same villain he played in that dodgy Star Trek film where he killed fat old Captain Kirk? I can only bow my head in shame...

The Keep (1983) I'm a big fan of Michael Mann. I love Manhunter, which I think is superior to Silence of the Lambs, and I think Heat and The Insider are marvelous films. Okay, so in this film we have Nazis, a malevolent vampiric entity, fine actors with mumbling problems and a Tangerine Dream soundtrack (they got a lot of film work in the mid-80s)...and I still don't know what the hell happens in this film. I get the impression that this film was heavily edited from a much longer cut, but I'm only speculating. Jurgen Prochnow, Ian McKellan and Gabriel Byrne mumble unintelligibly while Scott Glenn plays a supernatural guardian of goodness who shows up to get laid and fight evil--all in a day's work. It's bad, but it does have style--I'd like to see a definitive version on DVD. Does Michael Mann disown this film? I haven't heard, but I'd be interested in what he had to say about this incoherent horror film.

Hmmm...

Johnny Mnemonic - I like it better than The Matrix plus it has Henry Rollins. "Give me $10,000 a night hookers"

Tank Girl - Fun, fun, fun. And with Ice-T and a special(?) apperance by Iggy Pop and a mutant robo dolphin how can you go wrong? Lori Petty is hot.

The Naked Killer - This is just a special film. Naked chicks kicking. Be sure to get the subtitled version as the subtitles are...interesting. Great party film for those not easily offended.

Dolemite - Ahhhh Yeah. This is just classic. Blaxploitation at it's best. Dolemite with the help of his kung-fu whores goes up against a drug lord to get his bar back. Be warned though, not for the easily offended.

Hell Comes To Frog Town - Camp film doesn't get much better than this. Roddy Piper is forced by the Government to be a human "stud" and rescue fertal females from the frog people.

Hudson Hawk - This movie just gets weirder and weirder as it goes. I love it.

Not Of This Earth (remake) - Campy fun as space vampires plot to make off with the human blood supply. Tracy Lords first non porno film, and she can't seem to remeber that.

Modern Vampires - Danny elfmans brother made this. The one that has been making a name for himself in offbeat homosexual plays way-the-hell-off broadway. anyway best camp movie to come out in a LONG time. Plus it has Udo Kier, wich is a must in a vampire movie.

Bad Taste - coming to DVD soon. Peter Jackson's silly gore fest. Maybe more gory and sillier than Dead Alive.

Street Trash - also coming to DVD soon. Talk about a movie with no plot. Some street bums explode when they drink some stale(?) booze they buy from the local cheap-ass liquer store. Mostly just an excuse for over the top silly gore.

Great thread this Retro! As much as adore movies like Requiem for a dream,L.A. Confidential, Eyes Wide Shut,Crouching Tiger,2001..etc etc, I believe every collection needs a dose of crap to balance things out.
There's nothing quite like a slice of no brain junk (read: films that all the critics hated with a passion)to tarnish a dvd collection.

Believe it or believe it not I actually bought Driven twice - Region 1 & the Region 3 DTS version (probably the most amazing sounding dvd in my collection - absolutely reference standard).
The movie is totally flawed but I love anything Sly stars in and I know that for 2 hours i can switch brain into neutral (bad pun intended) and enjoy some totally daft racing action.
Other guilty pleasures from Sly that are tucked away in a corner include The Specialist,Get Carter and Judge Dredd (Go ahead flame away..i deserve it).

Like Seamonkey I love anything Verhoven puts out although i havn't stooped to the levels of Showgirls yet (That's cause I'm holding out for an ultimate edition )

I bet Soggy Baggel thinks he's caught in some horrible nightmare when he reads this thread

I already admitted my Deathstalker II DVD purchase, but I'll purge all remaining guilt by admitting ownership of these beauties:

The Black Hole - Maximillian the robot rules!! Scarier than the Terminator.

Godzilla '98 - dumb fun w/the emphasis on dumb. Liked the action scenes.

Flash Gordon - cheesy, but fast-paced and Von Sydow is brilliant as Ming.

Missing in Action - The original M.I.A. rescue flick and Chuck's at his wooden best.

The Beastmaster - Marc Singer, Tanya Roberts topless, and ferrets. Need I say more?

Tango and Cash - I love Sly, but Kurt Russell carries the movie. He's in on the joke. Sly doesn't seem to be. Lots of stuff gets blown up real good.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space - no comment.

Most of these were nostalgia purchases (except for Mr. 'Zilla). You can see how the teenager. 1980's destroyed my movie-going tastes as a

Also, all of them were less than $10. It's amazing how quickly your good sense fades when confronted by cheap DVD prices.

Oh no...is that the Cannonball Run for $9.99

I would have to say my guilty movie pleasures are:

Roadhouse (lots of great T & A)
Death Wish 2 (love watchin the baddies die!)
Name of the Rose (great, albeit unnecessary, sex scene in the middle of this film)
The Lady in Red (kickass violence and sex scenes)
The Brood (watch Samantha Eggar lick blood off her baby!!)

yes I'm a sick bastard! (hee hee)

I bought a pack of gum yesterday - Bubblicious - Watermelon. I know everyone's saying "Hold off, there's gonna be a special edition with remastered flavor and at least it won't be in that awful paper wrapper." But you know what, I figured it's worth it. I mean if it's not that good, I can always auction off the rest of the pack on eBay. And then if Bubblicious revisits the Watermelon gum, I can use the money to re-purchase the upgrade.

I think I may be the only person in existence, but I enjoyed Monkeybone. Also in the recently released category I liked Driven. Other guilty pleasures include Dr. Giggles, The Goonies, various other 80's kids movies (hey, I grew up with them), and assorted badly dubbed Jackie Chan movies.

Like DVDUSA, I have no guilt, but I understand what you mean. Here's mine:

Exorcist II---Call it a reverse of when you get caught up in the hype and it sucks. I got caught up in the pans, and found it not that bad.

Superman III---This sequel gets its as$ kicked by a lot of people, but if you don't compare it to I and II, I think you may enjoy it.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls---Don't think I need to explain this one.

The Men's Club---Apparently, a lot of people think "great cast, sucky movie", but I really enjoyed watching this. Even if the male characters were a bunch of jerks. Any movie that has Roy Scheider, Harvey Keitel, Frank Langella, Richard Jordan and Treat Williams in one movie is ok with me.

The King of Marvin Gardens - This is a mostly-forgotten Jack Nicholson starrer from circa 1972 that nobody I've met has seen. It doesn't really go anywhere, but I like it for some strange reason. I also like Nicholson's wardrobe in it.

Unlike dvdusa, I experience guilt but not shame. The guilty pleasure in my collection is:

Q the Winged Serpent

The lowlights of this Larry Cohen film include not-so-special effects, gratuitous gore, and a plot that could easily have been the inspiration for Godzilla '98. Nevertheless, I find the concept of a dragon nesting in the Chrysler Building and snatching rooftop sunbathers incredibly appealing. As an added bonus, it features Michael Moriarty and cult-movie favorite David Carradine.

Superman III & IV - What can I say, I love ALL the Superman movies, including the ones everyone hated.

Wild, Wild West - I literally went against everyone's opinion when this was on in the theatres & saw it (alone, mind U 'cause no one wanted to see it...including MRS. Riddler). What can I say, I loved it!

Three Amigos - Another general movie public hating film. This movie still cracks me up! Me & two other friends (that happen to like it too) are forever quoting this movie! "Jefé...what is a plethora?"
