Planet of the Apes is great

I just wanted to say that planet of the Apes is a great movie.

I do not understand why Tim Burton received all this criticism from the so called critics.

This movie shows us how evil man is and how man is destroying our planet.

Well done Tim great effort and keep up the good work.

The critics need to understand that movies (and music) is not a science - it is an art.

I agree Planet of the Apes was a great picture, the old one and the newer remake the only thing that botherd me in the Burton flick was the gorilla getting out of the police car. The way he ended it like that seemed just plane dumb, and stupid looking.
A trip back to the Apes' Planet would have been better for the sequel, at least a lot better looking, the backgrounds in the Burton movie were stunning.

Costcutters,

Do you work at the barber shop/hair salon called costcutters? just wondering, since I just got my haircut there about 2 weeks ago. Let me know.

I bought a pack of gum yesterday - Bubblicious - Watermelon. I know everyone's saying "Hold off, there's gonna be a special edition with remastered flavor and at least it won't be in that awful paper wrapper." But you know what, I figured it's worth it. I mean if it's not that good, I can always auction off the rest of the pack on eBay. And then if Bubblicious revisits the Watermelon gum, I can use the money to re-purchase the upgrade.

The ending of the film was great.

It resembled the original (Novel)

I can't wait for the sequel.

I'm afraid you got the Planet of The Apes Original Version (1968). Not that that's a bad thing, but it's not the new Tim Burton one.

I work in my local cinema and when we had Apes on I frequently asked customers about what they thought. Some liked it but most came out with conversations like the following,

customer:"It was rubbish, I cant believe I watched it all the way through, it was so strange!"
Me: "what, may I ask, did you not like about Tim Burton`s masterpiece?"
Customer: "Tim who?"
Me: "He made Batman, Batman Returns, Mars Attacks, Sleepy Hollow, BeetleJuice"
Customer with a clear look of confusion) "right, well anyway, the end was crap, I didnt understand it, what does it mean"
Me: "actually it is sup;posed to make you think, it doesnt really mean anything. Did you not like anything else?"
Customer: "no, the rest was great, just the end."

SO, everyone did not like the end , so did not like the rest of the film. Just like a crappy dessert can stain the memory of a great main course. But I loved it.

What bullshit.

I can assure you, I was bored and annoyed by this dreadful piece of crap all the way through the meal, and was thankful when the dessert was served so I could get the hell back to my car. It is the worst thing Burton has ever done, yes, worse than MARS ATTACKS! and worse than BATMAN RETURNS.

I dunno what happened to him, but I no longer have any faith in his ability to turn out anything but kids' movies for warped kids.

I have to agree with gravy on this one.

planet of the apes has great make-up effects and that's really about it. The Special effects are rather cheesey.

Basically, the redundant quoting of lines from the original movie, the overacting of the Thade character and the inane grunting, plus the moronic dinner party scene were enough to make me hate this movie. I am a huge fan of the original and I walked out of the theater heart broken at what they did to the original.
my 2 cents

My wife I enjoyed it as well. She has never seen the original.

A brilliant masterpiece that will sweep the Oscars? No. It’s not supposed to be.

Is it more of a forgetting where you are or all the worlds problems while you gobble down some popcorn with 300 people you don’t even know, You bet !!!

I don’t however think that Mark W has a career in acting. Why was he always out of breath when he said his lines?

hey dont get me wrong, I thought the film was good. Not Great. I loved the costumes, backgrounds and make-up. The story was pretty pants and the acting from MW was poor. But I loved the ending, everyone was up in arms at this. I think Burton did more with this ending than he could with a great film, it will be remembered!

Why was he always out of breath when he said his lines?

Because he was thinking of his scenes in Boogie nights when he was witrh Heather Graham and Julianne Moore, get anyone excited that would

I thought the new version was entertaining, and certainly better than a lot of other summer action movies, but I was disappointed in some respects.

The original, despite the numerous rewrites, emerged as a focused, politically-charged social commentary. The surprise ending was there both for shock, and to enforce the point of the movie. The story and dialogue were sharp and exceptionally well-written, and it still stands an excellent example of science fiction cinema.

By comparision, the remake (or re-imagining, whichever you prefer) was well-acted, well-directed, and well-staged escapism, with a somewhat meandering plot that didn't always seem sure of where it was going. The ending, I thought, was merely there because there was supposed to be a surprise ending, and to be honest, you really have to reach to explain it, if you can at all.

But maybe that was the point: to create debate. At any rate, I did enjoy the new version, and it was certainly technically accomplished, but it just can't quite touch the original.

Add me to the list of those that didn't like it. I wanted to like it, and did(pretty much) right up till the ending.
Saying the ending is supposed to leave you guessing just strikes me as weak storytelling.

I got to see the DVD last night. My roommate brought home a promo copy from her work. I have to say the DvdFile review is dead-on. The special features were really, really good. They even made me watch the movie again and pay attention to a lot more little details than I did the first time around. I haven't had a chance to see all of the extras yet, but here's what I thought was most interesting:
*face like a monkey - a little documentary on making the masks. Great to see the whole process from beginning to end, having to make plaster mold of each actor's head and then use it to make prosthetics, and then add each hair individually. It was very interesting. Also had a great tribute to the makeup artist from the original film.
*chimp symphony - what can I say? danny elfman is amazing. It was really nice to hear how passionate he is about music, and there's a lot of personal info about him and his whole music process. He makes his own percussion instruments and stuff. Very neat.
*multi-angle features. These have a navigation bar at the bottom to let you jump to the actual scene in the movie or see production art. Also a very good insight into how the movie was made.

I have to say this is what DVD's should be like. The world behind the movie is much more interesting to me than the feature itself. Oh, and the menus and navigation were the best I've seen so far, but I'm not necessarily a dvd expert.

So that's my "review", I guess. hope you enjoyed it.

Jim

I want to share my recent experience with you and ask for some advice.

I recently visited my local video store and I was totally amazed that they did not have any Planet of the Apes Videos / DVD's to hire.

That's right none at all not even the original or any series and we are talking about a major franchise video operation.

What should I do?

Like I said in the other thread the DVD is very good. If you liked the movie you won't be dissapointed. I can reccommend the DVD even though I personally didn't like the movie. And the movie does have merit to me. It has a great score and effects.
It just didn't go in the direction I would have liked and it did some thing sI found dissapointing such as repeat lines from the original.
And lines like "I'm having a bad hair day" or "can't we all just get along" cheapened what could have been great sci-fi.

Spoiler alert!!!

Let see, Guy for no reason decides to launch himself into a time hole that is never explained as to why it's there and why they are observing it, crashes to a planet of Apes and then runs away from a city for no reason until we find his ship which contains a tracking device that if it was so important to have why didn't he grab it before he left it in the first place. He then fights Apes of which he can not defeat but apparently continual beatings from a Gorilla or chimp have no effect and a human.

My favourite of course is bad Gorilla kills good Gorilla and then turns on his Buddy simply because a human tells him I created your culture.

Annoying Ape voices about drove me nuts, I guess all Apes grunt a like just as Wahlberge was in terrible shape, watch again and listen to him always talking like he just ran a mile even though he was just standing around.

Good movie, no, worth watching, I'd say yes. Worth owning, no way unless you truly enjoyed the ending which I did, but DOH!! saw it coming from a mile away!!

Not on my purchase list.

I enjoyed this movie. It wasn't great, but what was great this summer? I can't name one film.
And I liked the ending, because it had a cool Twilight Zone feeling. I always loved that show, and this ending seemed to pay tribute. Unless they expand on it in a sequel, and that would ruin it IMO.

Enjoyed the hell out of it! Phenomenal makeup, solid direction, arguably Danny Elfman's best score, and I just flat out don't see what everyone's hang up with the ending is--it lacks the social impact of the original's, to be sure, but in terms of temporal mechanics, it is very easily comprehended. I find comments like Nexus 6's "you really have to reach to explain it, if you can at all." to be harder to decipher than POTA 2001's ending. Though I don't intend to let Hollywood off the hook for its many transgressions, I'm also beginning to get the sense that audiences are just getting too damn cranky...

Everyone comlains about the end of the film. What about the final battle scene. Burton does an excellent of showing just how powerful the scimians are, yet in the final fight the humans go toe to toe with them. After the jet (that still works by remote???) kills the first wave of monkey, the second wave alone would have torn the humans to pieces. After that, I cant bring myself to enjoy this movie ever again.

Right. That final battle should have lasted about three minutes.

The action sequences in POTA sucked. They were unoriginal, uninteresting, and downright boring. I didn't care about any of the characters or what happened to them. The movie's just a mess. And the ending is so out of place as to belong to another movie. It's like you got to the end of The Sixth Sense and the big surprise is that Bruce Willis is Keyser Soze. My response: "That's great, but what does it have to do with this fucking movie?"
