What Do You Use For Demo?
I use Tomorrow Never Dies most of the time along with The World Is Not Enough. But I think I am going to use the Pod Race from Episode I from now on.

i used to use my dvd of The Matrix, but now I also use the pod race scene from episode 1.
------------------ I bought a pack of gum yesterday - Bubblicious - Watermelon. I know everyone's saying "Hold off, there's gonna be a special edition with remastered flavor and at least it won't be in that awful paper wrapper." But you know what, I figured it's worth it. I mean if it's not that good, I can always auction off the rest of the pack on eBay. And then if Bubblicious revisits the Watermelon gum, I can use the money to re-purchase the upgrade. Re
Nothing, I am the only family member who likes DVD, and sadly, the only thing my friends think is cool about DVD is that you don't have to rewind.
.But, to entertain myself, I watch the trailer for Bady Boys. No, it's not the best look-sounding disc but, it sure is a cool trailer.

For Dolby Digital I use my laserdiscs primarily, because they often have those cool DD intros which are missing from most DVD's.(except some recent Anchor Bay and Japanese import discs)
Depending on the guests, I get a wide variety of different types of people, some less eclectic than others and some who love everything. These are the LD's I usually choose from for DD. 1. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (Opening DD intro + cliffhanger sequence which sounds awesome!!!!!!) 2. Showgirls (Opening DD intro + Elizabeth Berkley's first strip club routine...it's just like being there and the guys love it!) 3. From Dusk till Dawn (the opening pre-title sequence which from start to finish kicks ass!!) 4. The Rock (Any action sequence is great for DD.) Okay, those were my Dolby Digital LD samples, and they are still really impressive, but now I do show a few samples of DD to friends interested specifically in DVD, and they are: 1. Run Lola Run (opening title sequence, it gets me every time! Another dvdfile member took my advice and picked this baby up!) 2. Blade (it's getting a bit old, but when I started in DVD, I loved to crank that opening club sequence. It was my first show-off disc all the way around) 3. Ronin (I love the way the car chases sound. Actually, this is the first disc I heard in DD 5.1, and I still love it. Just awesome. 4. The Doors (I used to use the LD back when I first got pro-logic surround. How far we've come! I still love to rock out to this and always crank it at parties!) and now for the moment some of you have been waiting for...DTS!! I never had the capability to play DTS LD's..too bad. And I don't have the rear EX or ES setup (yet), but I have lots of DTS discs, including demos 2 and 3 which I did use to show off back when I only had "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Daylight" in DTS. Now I use... 1. Saving Private Ryan (Believe it or not, I held out on buying this disc until just about a month ago. I'm not a huge fan of the film, but it is the BEST DTS I've ever heard. I love the opening beach sequence...but it's grueling to watch, so I only demo it for my closest friends Still, it's my top demo right now.)2. Seven (the sound is so superb, it really adds to the overall effect. I play the early investigation scene with the rain.) 3. Born on the Fourth of July (okay, so I still use it. The video transfer is pure shit, but they sacrificed it for the loudest damn track out there) 4. Cast Away (I actually found this to be the most effective use of surround sound last year. It's just a great demo.) thanks for reading. peace out. |

Believe it or not, out of the 370 titles I own, I tend to use The Fight Club the most as a demo....two key scenes that'll push your sound limits:
1. The "Loud-as-can-be" Chemical Bros. intro into Ed Norton's brain. 2. The imagined "Airplane crash" sequence.

No Superbit demo's anyone?
I use "The Fifth Element" Superbit as a good all around demo disk to exhibit color. The Leeloo escape scene and the scene with the Diva.
"The Haunting" DTS version is a great to demo your DTS setup. 'The Matrix" always kicked butt in the lobby scene. Rattles the glass around my house. Good for bass demos (besides what was already mentioned, all great reference disks) is "Godzilla" starting with the "fire at will" chapter. Boom! ![]() Looks like I'll be using TPM as well as a demo disk as that's a perfect movie that everyone likes. A great movie to show blacks and line definition is "The Crow" SE. I popped that in and also had a old VHS copy of the same movie on another video imput, the people I was showing it too almost passed out the difference was so great. I seen "Air Force One" on demo at a Good Guys in one of their "sound rooms" and that rocked. I mean it really rocked. "Toy Story 2" (and now "Shrek" as well) is another good one to show colors and just how well an animated movie can look on DVD. -Flash |

Since I just got a new reciever and can finnally hear movies in Dolby and DTS I was wondering if anyone had any other movies they consider reference quality. In paticular I am looking for specific scences in movies that can really show off the sound. I would like to find something that would actually make it feel like the sound is going around me, if that makes sense.
Please check out my DVD list and let me know if anything stands out. If not I can run to the store and buy whatever. Thanks |

You can try Cast Away for DTS with the scene when the plane goes down in the water. Fight Club when he describes the emergeny procedure for the plane malfunction. Hanibal in the beginning during the shootout sequence. All three of these have above average picture and sound quality to show off the sense of envelopement that only a digital surround system can provide. You also have LotR and Monsters Inc which are considered demo discs for the entire movie.

Looking at your list;
Lord of the Rings EE Seven Pearl Harbor Perfect Storm Attack of the Clones (asteroid chase for starters) Twister You have a number of other good sounding discs, but those have very active surrounds. There maybe others that I'm not 100% certain of.

For demonstrating my Home Theatre capabilities, I tend to start with some DVD-Audio...high clarity and superior dynamic range. Metallica's black album always kick a little A$$.
Movie, have to go with the ever popular Episode 1 pod race and the Seismic charges of Episode II. I've also been pretty fond of the sound in Any Given Sunday, Fast and the Furious, The Haunting, Moulin Rouge (the awesome thunder of the windmill sweep), Pearl Harbor (when ben affleck dies...DIE DIE DIE!--j/k, the battle), Requiem for a Dream, Saving Private Ryan (D-Day), Band of Brothers (Especially Bastonge), and We Were Soldiers. But probably my favorite disc to demo is The Eagles, Hell Freezes Over. The most impressive use of Multi-Channel music I've heard to date. |

I don't have much of a home theater, nor do I have many people stop by to show off DVD too. But once when my bus driver stopped by to babysit per Dad's request, I popped in Monsters, Inc. Mot only did she love the film and see how great it looked on DVD, but I was also able to show her that fullscreen cropped image out and that she should always demand widescreen. (Sure, they reformatted the whole film for the 1.33 ratio, but the point was made that wider is better.) We also dove into the extras and both had a lot of fun with it.
Not too long after, she upgraded to DVD, and Monsters, Inc. was her first software purchase, That said, I set aside a few discs as my refrence discs in case I ever do get the chance to show off. They are:

I have a 6.1 set-up but live in a crappy apartment, so I only turn it up on Sundays:
- LoTR:EE (DTS-es) - Star Wars: Episode II (DD-ex) - Blade II (either DTS or DD) I thought all three DVDs boost perfect v/a, definite pick up's for anyone
