2002 looks like a great year for DVD

January brings:
The Sixth Sense: Vista Series
Tombstone: Vista Series
Groundhog Day SE
Atlantis: The Lost Empire CE

February:
Peter Pan SE

And then all the stuff without a release date but are looking very likely:

The Back to the Future Trilogy (finally?!)
Office Space SE
Goodfellas SE
Amadeus SE
Rain Man SE
Jerry Maguire SE
Beauty and the Beast Platinum Edition
Monsters, Inc. CE
Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: 25th Anniv.

Maybe even Episode II (if we're lucky and if it doesn't suck).

What are you guys looking forward to picking up? How in the world am I going to afford this all - and this is only what's been announced/rumored - there's bound to be more!

I am looking forward to the A.I. DVD. I would love to see a making of documentary and listen to a director commentary for that film (if Spielberg will finally commit to doing one).

Another DVD that I will be anticipating and will definately buy is The Lord of the Rings.(if it comes out)

Though not a huge hit, I'm hoping Zoolander is released in early 2002 and I'm also looking forward to Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back as well.

2002 will indeed be a great year for DVD enthusiasts. The Coen Brothers' Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, Fargo SE, Raising Arizona SE will be released.

Fans of David Lynch can look forward to Blue Velvet being re-released along with Lost Highway, Eraserhead, Wild at Heart, short films, Twin Peaks the Complete Second Season and possibly Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (with all of those deleted scenes).

Scorcese fans can look forward to special editions of Mean Streets, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and possibly Casino. If you're a fan of 1970s films like I am, you'll salivate when One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest SE, Serpico, McCabe and Mrs. Miller and Klute are brought to DVD.

And because I refuse to get cable, I'll be looking forward to boxed sets of M*A*S*H, Millennium, more X-Files, Space:1999 (ahh, 70s kitsch), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

And one of my favorites from last summer, Ghost World.

Speaking of TV stuff, how did I forgot Seasons 2 & 3 of The Simpsons - I don't know if I should be happy or sad about that. The money...

Most of the stuff I mentioned was re-releases I've been holding off getting, or catalogue material making its DVD debut, there's also a majority of films released to theaters this fall coming early next year, so you Corky Romano fan can look forward to that!

What a convieniant thread! I've been trying to make a list of upcoming DVDs and release dates, this helps out a lot.

What I'm looking forward to are Zoolander, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, GhostWorld, A.I., Sixth Sense Vista Series, Office Space SE, the BTTF trilogy, and Evil Dead.

Amongst a lot of others still in theaters but haven't been announced/won't come out until the end of next year. Monsters Inc., Harry Potter, Amelie...etc.

Isn't Alien: 5 Star Collection supposed to be released some time next year? Or will that be 2003? I am so all over that when it's released.

I was just thinking last night how dismal 2002 looks in term of releases. The only things I want on the horizon are:

Children of Paradise
A.I.
Rashomon
The Hunger
Blade Runner
La Dolce Vita
Solaris
Little Deiter Needs to Fly
Fata Morgana
Heart of Glass
Impromptu

What I would like released:

Butcher Boy
Wise Blood
Newly mastered Gone with the Wind that Warners released in Europe last month.
Metropolis
The Pathfinder
Ugetsu
Last Exit to Brooklyn
Virgin Spring
MST3K Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

There are a number of good things coming in 2002, most of which have already been listed. The movies I can't wait for are:

The Bad News Bears
The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training

(Although Paramount should have made these SEs.)

I wish that Ben Affleck was doing the commentary on J&SBSB. That would be nice, he always gives a little flair and convorsation to the previous commentaries.

Pearl Harbor Vistas Series will be a big event.
Lord of the Rings will kick ass, especially if it's Infinfilm.
I would like to see them redo American Beauty - Deleted Scenes
Alien 5 Star - even though I already have it.

and

Joyride, I enjoyed this movie alot, it better get a decent FOX treatment.

and last but not least,

Shawshank Remeption better be in the works, I hate my copy. I hate it.

Films as great as this deserve to get the ultimate treatment. Movies like Battlefield Earth has A good bit of special features. It is one of the worst movies of the year. And Shawshank, 7 oscar nominations? released by the same company as Battlefield Earth and yet no special features?

Did I mention I am a guy who loves special features? I'm not gonna buy a DVD because it has them or not, but when I know they could have put a tad bit more effort into some of their big titles like this, it just pisses me off.

I understand that, as I love special features too. And I wasn't even playing on the word "hate" (since it's unlikely one can truly "hate" an inanimate object I just wonder what you would want them to add to the disc. Well I guess they could add some nice stuff, you're right. And not just a Darabont commentary, though that would be OK. For some reason (maybe I don't want to have to buy again and sell the old), I just don't feel like I'd be interested in too many features for Shawshank. But that's just me, and for a movie that good, they should have a Special Edition out, and if the rumors hold true....
