Penn & Teller: BULLSHIT!

The second season starts tonight.

For those not familiar with the show, it's on Showtime and possibly the best thing to happen to the truth since Jimmy Swaggart was caught. They take on many issues that are filled with would be do gooders, con men, and some folks that are just plain lost. Exposing the bullshit behind the smile. Who better to do so then the princes of the con.

The first episode in season 2 takes on P.E.T.A and airs tonight at 10PM.

Who else loves this show?

I know I would love it if it was broadcast here....

I'm defintely going to hunt down the first season that was just released on DVD.
Sounds like a very fun show, in much the same way that www.snopes.com is a brilliant website.

I actually TiVo'd the whole first season and transferred them to a video tape, but I'd love to have the season set as well.

When Dish gave us Showtime for a week or so preview I watched this every chance I got. It isn't enough to entice me to get Showtime on a monthly basis, but I have an eye on the DVD set.

Definately one of the more insightful and funny things on TV right now.

Does anybody know what the difference is? I bought the censored version at best buy (only thing available) and thought the censored stamp was a normal part of the title. The discs have plenty of swearing and some naked fun, so I don't know what is uncensored about it.

I think the only difference is the word "Bullshit" on the packaging.

They made mincemeat out of PETA.

This week's wasn't quite as much fun as last week, if only because safety hysteria doesn't make quite as big, fleshy, meaty a target as PETA, but it was still dead on.

I'm beginning to think of P&T as being a lot like John Stossel, but with nudity and F-words.

Agreed.

I think they were a little incomplete with the toilet seat thing. They should have included people that actually do have rashes or other things that could be transferred and given actual info on how long certain bacteria or whatever can survive instead of just that they wouldn't live very long. Or even tested how much was transferred and if the paper thing could protect you from it or not.

And, yes, I do use 2 sheets whenever I have to use a public toilet.

War on Drugs tonight. This show is always best when P&T feel passionate about the subject, like with PETA and then tonight.

They didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, but they said it better than I could.

Re: Penn & Teller: BULLSHIT!

Is there any word on when new episodes will resume on Showtime? Thanks to internet censorship I cant go to the showtime page as I am in Canada and it says 'Sorry, these pages are intended for viewing from within the United States only'
the last thing I saw was The Fountain Of Youth.
when season 2 started they said they had started production on a minimum of 12 episodes, and if my counting is right, only 8 have been aired.

The site only has 8 episodes listed:

Season 2:

P.E.T.A.
Safety Hysteria
The Business of Love
War on Drugs
Recycling
The Bible
Yoga, Tantric Sex, Etc.
Fountain of Youth

With nothing new on the schedule.

Definitely. And the fact that they give it to anybody who they think is acting stupid lends them some legitimacy.

I think thats pretty hard on Penn & Teller. John Stossel's psudo-reporting has gotten so bad since Hugh Downs left 20/20. I always thought it was Barbara Walters who was holding things together around that show, but the second Hugh left John Stossel went out of control and Barbara tried to host that Who Wants My Baby show.

Is there official word that season 2 is done or will there be 4-5 more episodes before season 3 starts, presumably in September?

I do have to say though, it seems like P&T really blew through their A-list material in season 1. They really seem to be grasping for topics in season 2. Some episdes are really really good, but some blow. I think the show has 1 more season left. I am really hoping for an episode on presidential elections. Penn will be swearing to high heaven.

I saw a couple of commercials yesterday advertising new episodes of Bullshit starting in early August, something like the 6th or the 8th (I forgot the exact date).

Yeah they also seem to grasp some of the complexity of what they are covering, i.e. the motivations, etc. and they often acknowledge that there is usually a rationally based middle ground. John Stossel is more of the kind of people P&T go after.

For example, P&T's show on environmentalists does not denounce environmentalism, but goes after the uneducated extremist bent who have no idea what they're talking about. Stossel's tactic is usually to misrepresent environmentalists as a whole in order to advance his cause. P&T attacks PETA because it is an irrational extremist group that encourages violence, however they provide testimony from rational groups, which encourage the humane treatment of animals to show exactly how crazy the PETA fanatics are. Stossel would view this as a weakening of his argument.

P&T may seem blunt in its techniques sometimes, but it often shows a greater level of sophistication than most major media editorialists, mainly because they don't seem to be working for a political party. While their overall statement usually resembles a libertarian position, they really are just out to attack bullshit and those that use it to manipulate, mislead, and take advantage. If that truly is their mission statement, John Stossel would be more of a target than a colleague.

Re: Penn & Teller: BULLSHIT!

Woot! epguides.com has the titles and air dates of the rest of season 2 up ...

ep.209 - 5 Aug 04 Death, Inc.
ep.210 - 12 Aug 04 Profanity
ep.211 - 19 Aug 04 12-Stepping
ep.212 - 26 Aug 04 Exercise vs. Genetics

any ideas on what they will be about?

12-Stepping seems pretty obvious (12 Step Programs to get healthier), but Death inc? or Exercise vs Genetics?

Profanity sounds pretty fun though.

My hopes for a Presidential Election episode for the end of the season are pretty much gone. Maybe next year.
I am also looking forward to a File Sharing episode in season 3. I don't care which side of the debate they are on, my guess is that they'd be for it though.

The new episode airs in less than 24 Hours!

any word on if there will be a season 3? if there is they should call it quits after that. they really seem to have been reaching for topics in season 2 and the episodes have not been a good or as funny

woot! a new episode has been added to the schedule for September 9th, bringing the total episodes for this season to 13, just as season 1.
the plot synopsis make it sound like a rehash of some old concepts though. are they really running out of bullshit this fast?
i seem to be the only one posting to this thread. if i'm the only one watching the show they really are in trouble!

wow.. 4 posts in a row, all months apart. is anyone else into this show?

any word on season 3 yet? the sho.com website is only available to US residents and it is very difficult to navigate when using proxify.com.

Come on Presidential Elections and Filesharing !

I'll try givin' this another bump. is anyone watching this?

Season 3 has been OK, nothing can top season 1 though.

Circumcision was literally painful the way they kept showing it and shoving it in your face. Life Coaching was pretty funny. Holier Than Thou should have been an hour so they could have backed up the stuff they were saying more, and I am waiting for College, Hair, Big Brother and Gun Control to arrive.

What I want to know though is if the episode that was supposed to be aired on July 4th (Signs From Heaven) has been delayed and if they went with Ghost Busters last night on the 11th. I have a friend that records them and sends me a tape every once in a while (cause Showtime isn't available in Canada and you cant even access the web site from outside the US), and he said he couldn't find any sign of an episode on July 4th.

Don't have the Showtime anymore, since they Canceled Dead Like Me, but I did pick up the season 1 & 2 sets, so I am catching up on the episodes I missed right now.

I've been watching and have seen all episodes aired other than the latest one. The gun control one was pretty poor. Very light on actual data and solid arguments. The college one wasn't the greatest either.

So this season has taken a turn for the worst. The show has obviosuly run out of real material to mine and so now they're turning to political ideas that are just horribly presented and with an obvious bias for P&T's Libertarian views. Pretty sad for a show about bull shit.

The endangered species episode was terrble. Bad notions, unexposed biases, and poor arguments all around. They need to stick to ideas that are obvious and fun to expose such as seances, magic, and other hooey. They're doing a terrible job of feeding us their political views.
