Animation does not mean it is kiddie crap

This is a Major peeve of mine, where most people assume that cartoons are only for children.

1. While the orignal Fraggle Rock that aired on HBO for 96 episodes ('83-'87) was indeed a live action puppetry show, there was a spin-off animated series that ran for one season on NBC.

2. While there have been two non-region 1 DVD releases, they are the versions of Fraggle Rock native to the countries they were released in. The scenes with the Fraggles are the same (except they speak French in France and such), but the scenes which featured "Doc" in America featured different characters in other countries.

3. Disney did indeed buy the Muppets. However, "Fraggle Rock" was not included in the sale and as such seems to have become a much higher priority for the Henson company.

I wouldn't be suprised to see the Fraggles out within a year. HBO may own the home video distribution rights to it, that I'm not sure of but I know Henson is aggressively shopping it around.

I'm hoping Columbia Tri Star will get the rights to the show like the other Henson productions lately (StoryTeller and still waiting on Greek Myths series) If i remember correctly the show was filmed in Toronto at the CBC building (still have a few sets too i believe) and makes a return every so often on CBC saturday mornings. Anyways i wouldn't be surprised if it gets a release anytime soon. Might be through Universal if NBC was the last company one to hold the rights to the series and now being the owners of Universal Studios . . . you never know.

In early April we passed on this news that a deal was made between The Jim Henson Company and HIT Entertainment for rights to several properties which were left in Henson Co.'s hands, after most of their other properties had gone to Disney earlier in the year in a separate transaction. Fraggle Rock was among the properties that HIT bought the rights to.

Two weeks ago, we posted a story indicating that HIT was working on the first release of Fraggle Rock on DVD, but we later removed that news post at the request of the ultimate source of the info, because HIT Entertainment hadn't authorized the disclosure.

Now we've been informed that HIT released information late last week to the folks at MuppetCentral.com (a fan-originated site). Here's what their news article says:

However, one aspect of this last note may have been premature, since at the same time reports such as this one were surfacing that the UK-based HIT Entertainment had just issued a stock warning to their London Market investors that profits would be lower than expected, due in large part to the cutback of shelf space for their products by a major U.S. retail partner identified as Wal-Mart.

Don't worry, though! Other U.S. chains such as Best Buy are also known to carry HIT videos, and of course TVShowsOnDVD will have links available to purchase the Fraggle Rock (and other HIT Entertainment DVDs) through major online e-tailers Amazon.com, Amazon.ca (Canada), DVDEmpire.com, and DVDPlanet.com. Those will be available just as soon as the title is officially announced, and those sellers start to list them.

We encourage Fraggle Rock fans to purchase the intial DVD releases and show support for the franchise. However, we've already heard from a lot of Fraggle fans that they don't want individual episodes on DVD; they want season sets. These sentiments are reflected in the TVShowsOnDVD voting for the show: 97% of our voters want season sets, and only 21% indicate they would even consider "individual episode" releases. How many voters does this show have? Well, it's in the top 2% of all shows on the site! Yikes! Yes, it's one of the "Hot 100" most-popular TV series that is unreleased-on-DVD (so far) at this website...and the voters want season sets.

This idea is echoed over at MuppetCentral.com, where the fans there have set up this discussion thread to talk about the Fraggle Rock release, including the Wal-Mart news, the choice of episodes on this initial release, the almost-27,000-signature petition asking for a DVD release of the show, and of course the choice of individual episodes vs. season sets. In fact, they have a poll there for registered members of their forum to vote on "how much would you would pay for a 24-episode Fraggle season box set?", with the indication that results of the survey would be provided to HIT.

We'll also have the specific street date, price, and cover art for the 1-disc, 2-episode July DVD release the moment that HIT provides it.

Sadly i think the 2 episode per disc might hurt sales. If they know they have a big demand for the series on dvd then why not do bigger volume sets or season sets? Well its a start

Got the first DVD at Wal-Mart today for $10.

It has the first 3 episodes on it.

Picture's about as good as I was expecting for the material.

Just happy to have Fraggle Rock on DVD.

There's a little paper flier in it stating that there would be more Fraggle Rock in the Fall of 2004.

Anybody heard anything more about further releases yet?

A read an article on another DVD site Friday that HIT Entertainment will be releasing Fraggle Rock in Season sets in the Fall of 2005!!! There is some hope in this world.

Hope is no longer needed as we are getting our Season Sets Fall 2005 I can't wait and here is the article.

You may have heard a rumor that HIT Entertainment was planning season sets for Fraggle Rock, but the company hadn't decided their plans until a few days ago. We spoke with one of the top dogs over there and he said they're going to go ahead with the rumored plans to release the first season in the Fall of 2005. Some of their customer service reps got a bit carried away and were telling people the plans before they were finalized. We're glad they're going through with them!

We'll keep you updated with any more information we get, though we don't expect anything for a long time.
