The Wire - a little dissapointed

I watched the first disc(3 episodes) and decided not to watch anymore. I had heard that this was better than the Sopranos, so my expectations were high. But the Sopranos hooked me by one disc, actually after one episode. This just left me feeling underwhelmed. And felt like a generic cop show. Does this get better? Anyone a big fan of the show that can tell me what I'm missing? I really wanted to like this show, but those episodes were kinda average. Maybe my expectations were too high.

I would watch the whole season and then decide. It is a lot more cerebral than shows like Sopranos and Oz. But stick around; it is worth the wait. There are a couple of moments in the series that will knock you on your ass.

It's been a little while, maybe I'll rent the 2nd disc and give it a shot. I think it was netflix shipping it to me from California and it taking so long to get to me that kinda soured it for me a little bit, and the fact that I wasn't instantly blown away. Thanks for letting me know I should stick with it.

i watched both seasons of the wire that are out on dvd. a friend recommended it to me, and i saw it. i really enjoyed both seasons, and you get a feel for the characters over time. nothing is force fed to you, and it is not a fast moving drama. it does pick up the pace in the second disc. i recommend you give it another shot.

I borrowed the first season from a friend. I started out soooooo sloooooow. What a huge bore. It picked up a bit totawds the end but in no way made me wanna watch any more episiodes. As far as dramas go it doesn't compete with my 2 favorites House and Battlestar Galactica.

yeah, you really need to give season 1 5-6 episodes before it starts moving. it really pays off at teh end of the season, and by the time season 2 starts, you're really into it. that said, i still havent seen season 3

Well, Best Buy had it on sale the other week for $25 so I picked that up and decided to give it another go. One of my friends swears it's the greatest thing ever and our tastes line up on almost everything else.

The Wire is one of the most content driven shows on television, there is stuff laid out in season 1 that get resolved all the way in season 3 and some in 4. In my eyes it is better than the Sopranos (but not by much)

The Wire is excellent... I think it is a little overrated and not the amazing quality of Six Feet Under or The Sopranos, but it is indeed a great show. It takes a little while to get moving, I don't think I was hooked until the end of Season One.

Season Two is where it really picks up though... Season Two is really a great piece of TV and could stand on its own as an excellent 12 hour movie. Very deep characters in a very believable world... worth the entry fee absolutely.

I bought Season Three but haven't watched it yet... waiting until I have the attention to devote to it.

I've been enjoying Season 1. So I picked up Season 2 from a used book/cd/dvd store for $35, I figured with the way everyone has raved about Season 2 in particular, that it was a good gamble.

Once you get familiar with the characters the show really flows well. It's not the fastest moving show, but it has depth, and the issues it raises are excellent. Season 3 was really, really good in my opinion.

personally i believe Season 2 is the best of the 4 so far, the change of scenery from the streets to the docks was the right move (dont worry if you loved the boys in the towers they are still hanging around you just dont see much of them)
