American Idol - 2008

Wow, I can't believe a thread hasn't been started about this yet. I'm not going to talk about everything we've seen up to tonight, and instead I'll just focus on the top 12 guys, and more specifically, the ones I liked.

First up, Jason Castro. The way I can tell which person I thought was the best is by seeing how many times I'm compelled to rewind the performance and watch it again. Jason was the only guy to make me do that, and I think I watched it about five times. The guy has just got the best color to his voice, and the performance was so damn earnest. He really made me believe that he was a true talent. And Paula was right - it was effortless. He was about the only performer to not make me think he was trying. The guy looked like he could have been performing that on a back porch. I really hope he carries on.

Next up... well, there isn't much else that made me sit up and take notice. Micheal Johns' take on "Light My Fire" was good, and Robbie Carrico was good too, but that was it. Jason stole the night, in my opinion.

Michael Johns is my favorite guy so far. I'll have to hear the rest some more.

Michael Johns and David(?) Archuleta(?) are the best so far imo. Problem with David is that he is too immature still and will get crushed by the machine. Maybe naive is a better word and it would be a shame for him to become disenfranchised already. Most of the other twelve are just too young and immature or just plain creepy.

I found Chakieze to be decent and actually appreciated his performance more when seeing it in recap than the first time through, but really didn't care for his attitude.

One thing I find surprising is the amount of "back talk" the people were giving the judges, specifically to Simon. I find it an immediate negative mark for the person if they are that disrespectful. Whether or not you like Simon's opinion or more importantly his frankness, he is very much more often right than not. When I hear the contestant say "well I guess I'm just happy it is in America's hands now and not yours" or something similar, I am surprised and know that they won't make it.

I think these themes kill the people. They aren't songwriters, they are just singers with varying levels of talent. Asking them to change arrangements of songs based on certain themes and then criticizing them mercilessly isn't fair to them. I think they should let them show range and variety, but the judges should keep the imposed theme in mind.

Doesn't Carly Smithson's Irish accent sound WAY more pronounced now then it did at the beginning of the season?

Cheekizy stole the show. No one could touch him last nite. David Cook and Carly Smithson were the runner ups.

Kristy Lee and David Archuleta were horrible. Never turn a Beatles song into a country diddy. As for Archuleta, this is what I was expecting to happen. He is not going to be able to handle the pressures of this show, and will crack, just last he did last nite.

I dont know why everyone is picking him to win it all. He is nothing more than a one-trick pony. Sure he can sing ballads and love songs. But thats it. He will never be able to sing anything close to a "rock song" because he doesnt have the diversity to do so. Too young.

As for everyone else, middle of the road and below.

Carly's my favorite so far. I got in a lot of votes for her the other night.

I also like Michael (as I said before), David Cook and Ramiele (though she didn't do as well this last time).

Chekeze is my fave. Consistently awesome, when he is on fire he is on fire. Solid and steady with a quality performance. If he gets a recording deal I am buying -- no doubt. (Also, he is one of the few on the show who is a new, up from the earth talent. See votefortheworst.com for the history behind such performers as Carly, Michael, David A. and Kristy Lee...except for David A., the rest have already signed recording deals and couldn't make it in the industry.)

Well it's started. So far all the people voted off have really been the week performers. I think Amanda, while not destined to be the winner, was far better than a couple of others who are still around. People who are more talented are going to start getting picked off one by one before less deserving remain (Ramiel, Kristy, Dreads-man)

My money is on the final three being Carly and the two Davids.

Im glad Amanda Overbite(meyer) is gone. She annoyed me to no end. Stop acting like a Diva, until you actually have something to back it up with. i.e. a long successful singing career.

And David Cook is falling into the same category. Simon was so on when he said that DC was acting smug.

I can't believe Chekeze is gone...and Malubay is still there? Not meaning to offend Americans but damn, they must be hard of hearing or something. Even Castro should have been gone before Chillin' Chekeze.

I agree about Jason Castro. I was bored with him weeks ago. Every week it's like, oh what a surprise. Another boring, folksy song.

Can't they just call it early and give the win to David Cook already. I'm not a huge fan of the show but this guy just kills everyone i've seen on stage.

No. If they call it early, we wont be able to see Mariah Carey have another public breakdown.

Carly's accent continues to grow back to her Irish roots...nice touch Mrs. Plant

David Cook's performance was the worst he has given so far

Who would believe that Jason "Toker" Castro had the best performance of the night!

Couldnt agree more. Cook is getting a little full of himself with his "Diva" persona.

And never in a million years would I have said that Dreadlock Boy would ever have the performance of the nite. I knew something was up, even after I rolled my eyes that he had a ukuele, that I was toe tapping to his performance.

That being said, I think David Cook is the only non-plant left on the show.

I did NOT see that coming. Shocked that Micheal Johns got the booted so early into the competition. If you want to call it "early". I had him pegged for the top 2 finalist. Hell, what do I know anyways? Not much.

I was shocked as well. Boring performer but had decent pipes...I still can't believe Kristy Lee continues on - I guess looks ARE everything

Personally, I think that the Lady from the Emerald Isle should have been sent packing after butchering a Queen classic. (It's ok Freddy...you can rest easy in your grave once more...hopefully they won't slaughter too many more of your songs.)

Can we just have no one win this season? I think they're all awful. I don't even want David Cook to win because then he's locked into that awful Idol contract. He's got to lose Daughtry-style.

Well when you put it that way i totally agree. David Cook is by far the best singer they have and SHOULD WIN the contest.

But like you have said (and what all of us at the IGN DVD Community board have also said) is that yes David Cook should win but we don't want him too. Except for Kelly Clarkson everyone else who has won have done dick all in sales. Then you have the "Losers" who have sold millions. Clay and Daughtry and now we need to add David Cook. I'm not a huge fan of the series (can't stand Paula) but i try always to catch David Cook sing and is the only thing worth watching for.

I think that David Cook should also win. He is the only one from the top 10 to get in there on his own. The others have all either had a record deal, album out that sold poorly and were then dropped, or have some sort of affiliation with Randy, Simon, or Paula.
It goes to show that even when they try to plant one of their projects on the show to get them some fame in order to sell more records in the future, the people with real talent will always shine over them.
