Innocence: Ghost In The Shell DVDs 9/15

Administrators, if you feel this should be in Off-World, feel free to move it.
I didn't know which forum it should really go in.

I posted this on a few other forums,
which I did the translation myself of the specs of Innocence on DVD:

Awesome, September 15th comes 4(!) different versions of Innocence,
designed to make hardcore fans broke very quickly.
But for people who might not be collectors,
go for this version:

Standard Edition

Y3800
9/15/2004
99 Minutes
Region 2 NTSC
2 Disc Set
Audio: Japanese Dolby 6.1 and Japanese Dolby 2.0
Subtitle: Japanese
1.85:1 Anamorphic
Special Features:
-Theatrical Trailers
-Making Of
-Mamoru Oshii and Toshio Suzuki interviews
-Audio Commentary
First Press Includes:
-“Premium Guide DVD: From “Ghost In The Shell To Innocence”

sorry, the image is a little blurry.....

But for the people who loved the Basset Hound,
and want to shell out a few extra yen:

Limited Edition Vol 1: Dog Box

Y6500
9/15/2004
99 Minutes
Region 2 NTSC
2 Disc Set plus Figurine
Audio: Japanese Dolby 6.1 and Japanese Dolby 2.0
Subtitle: Japanese
1.85:1 Anamorphic
Special Features:
-Theatrical Trailers
-Making Of
-Mamoru Oshii and Toshio Suzuki interviews
-Audio Commentary
-“Premium Guide DVD: From “Ghost In The Shell To Innocence”
Exclusive Bonus:
-Basset Hound Music Box figurine made of polystone (890g)
(Limited To 15,000)

But for someone who likes the making-of aspect more,
for the same amout of Yen, you can instead get:

Limited Edition Vol 2 Staff Box

Y6500
9/15/2004
99 Minutes
Region 2 NTSC
2 Disc Set plus 3 Books
Audio: Japanese Dolby 6.1 and Japanese Dolby 2.0
Subtitle: Japanese
1.85:1 Anamorphic
Special Features:
-Theatrical Trailers
-Making Of
-Mamoru Oshii and Toshio Suzuki interviews
-Audio Commentary
-“Premium Guide DVD: From “Ghost In The Shell To Innocence”
Exclusive Bonus:
-Original Storyboards Book
-Original Screenplay
-Original Script Dialogue
(Limited To 15,000)

But if you have approx $500 to shell out and you are an UBER-collector,
then there's no other way than the 5-DISC(!!!) set:
[side note: the release is 1 month after the other 3 versions]

Collector’s Box

Y49,800
10/15/2004
99 Minutes
Region 2 NTSC
5 Disc Set
Audio: Japanese Dolby 6.1 and Japanese DTS-ES 6.1
Subtitle: Japanese
1.85:1 Anamorphic
Special Features:
-Theatrical Trailers
-Making Of
-Mamoru Oshii and Toshio Suzuki interviews
-Audio Commentary
-“Premium Guide DVD: From “Ghost In The Shell To Innocence”
Exclusive Bonus:
-Complete Making Of (approx 4 hours on 3 discs)
-“Guynoid” Figure (40cm tall)
-Mamoru Oshii Layout: “Innocence Methods: Oshii’s Notes” (194 pages, color)
-Production IG Art Department Team’s “Innocence: Official Artbook”

Now, if you noticed,
sorry, NO english subtitles are on there,
which is strange since all of Studio Ghibli's major releases have had English Subtitles, but I don't know. Buena Vista Japan is releasing this set, by the way.

Innocence is supposed to have a US theatrical release in September in selected cities.
Hopefully your city has been selected.

Seriously, me personally I would like the Y6500 Staff Box,
with the script, storyboards, etc.

a 4-hour making of? OK, that's a bit too much to sustain my interest.
I probably would watch it if i got it, but once, and thats it! I dont see a rewatching value much of a 4-hour making-of

The 50 minute Spirited Away making of, now THAT was well done.
The 40 minute Indiana Jones making ofs, well done.

There is a thing called overkill......

the shorter condensed making-of on the regular releases sound much better.

oh, i agree, i was just inferring that most US anime/japanese live action movies get no respect from their US distributor. The extras usually include interviews with the American voice over actors, and very little on the actual produdction. The only recent exception was Returner, which included the 1 hour on-set diary with commentary...but that's rare on a Region 1 release.

This was just released in Japan, immediately hitting #1 on the charts.
Sad to say there are no English subtitles for this release,
only Japanese captions and Japanese Theatrical subtitles (for the non-Japanese parts)

The closest theater this is running at is 50 miles away. I can't make it out there for a while so hopefully it'll run for more than a week.

Has anyone seen this yet? I was thinking of going to Boston to see it, but don't want to spend my time and money if it is not good. It has gotten mixed reviews. I really liked the first one. Should I see this?

I saw this last week on the big screen and really enjoyed it. Stunning visuals. Be prepared for subtitles if you do go to a theater to see it. I like the 1st movie as well, but my favorite GITS of all is the standalone complex seires.

Although I quite liked it, giving it 8/10,
one thing interesting was the dialogue. Good or Bad it may be.
Since I am not exactly top notch on the meanings of Haikus, Proverbs, or Biblical mumbo jumbo, a lot of the dialogue just went over my head as to what they were actually trying to say.

But it doesnt seem like it is just me, but other people like on the imdb
(oh dear.... those posters.......)
seemed to also say that much of the dialogue seemed like mumbo jumbo.

Either way, visually and artistically an amazing piece of work.
It is again, a sci fi anime with more to think about than anything else.

Also, the Dolby 6.1 track was damn good. Can't imagine the DTS-ES being better,
but it certainly gave a kick in my living room.

Oh and do yourself a favor and watch the 1st movie before this one.
It will make MUCH more sense that way, seriously.

Also, I just couldnt get out of my head the fact that the voice actor
that played Togusa is the guy that did Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop,
therefore just 'thinking' his character was much cooler than he actually was.

Re: Innocence: Ghost In The Shell DVDs 9/15

I was definitely planning on rewatching GitS before going if I went. Haven't seen it in over a year. If ound the first 8 minutes online and, although it was very small and horrible quality, it still looked amazing. I might go down tomorrow. We'll see what happens.

I'll keep that in mind when I see it. Not really as cool as Spike.

The Japanese DVD has a 15 minute featurette called
"From Ghost In The Shell To Innocence"
which sums up the basic ideas from the GITS world,
and bridges the 2 films together (to make more coherence to people who might have not seen Part 1, or forgot some parts, etc) and also has a nice Character introduction too.

Okay, bash me all you want, but where's the english dub?

I love the english voice actors on the movie and the series.

Loved the movie, saw it twice (one day right after the other), but I got tired of having to read the subtitles when I really wanted to just watch the beautiful animation. I normally don't find sub-titles distracting, but in this case, I did. Both times.

Sounds like somebody's too cheap to pay for the time and actors to dub it.

Wow. That's just the kind of intelligent comment that I like to get.

This isn't the 80's. People do actually spend a lot of time and work making good, quality dubs now-a-days.

A lot of them actually even work with the original show writers and/or official staff from the company to verify translations.

If a dub is done well, I'd rather not have text covering part of the artwork and distracting the line of sight and visual style that the art directors spend a lot of time working on and developing.

I certainly want to have the original language track available (i.e. I'm absolutely ecstatic that the new Godzilla releases from Columbia/Tristar are not only great anamorphic letterboxed transfers, but have the Japanese language tracks). But I see no excuse, in this day and age, to not have a dub on a high-profile release.

And I'm tired of anime snobs talking trash about all dubs because some of them, especially ones in the past, have been bad.

If you're really that much of a purist, then spend the time and money to learn Japanese and watch it with no subtitles.

P.S.
I don't see people complaining about watching "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" in English when that's not it's original language.

Actually, watching a Japanese movie with no subs is not a problem for me.

I just never liked dubs since they ruin the feeling of the movie that the original actors gave.
TGTBATU is one of those strange exceptions in my library,
it was just a great movie, and since there really was no 'original audio'....

If they do dub it, alright, whatever. it's not going to bug me, as long as i have the original language.

Some anime or any live action movie that doesnt have the original language,
to me is much much worse than not being in OAR.
