Identify this cartoon

When Iw as a kid one cartoon show--eithe r aBugs Bunny or TOm and Jerry type show often had an old 50s (i think) short that had a littleboy who misbehaved and would go to school and look at the chalkboard and all the chal drawings etc came to life in his imagination. I think there was another one with him where he was sent to his room by his dad and he imagiend he was in a jungle, then an alien planet, etc.

Can anyone help me identify this? (And if it's on DVD?)

It must be "Simon in the land of Chalk Drawings".
Simon was always b/w and all the characters in Land of Chalk had colour.
SNL had a sketch called "Simon" where Mike Meyers played Simon, in a tub. They also released a remake of the cartoon, which was Narrated by Mr Dressup.

I know exactly what you are referring to, but for the life of me can't remember the character's name. I am positive this young boy was from a Warner Brothers cartoon. He used to fall asleep in the classroom and then imagine he was all sorts of places. I think from time to time he would be standing in front of the chalkboard and his teacher would be asking him something and he would get a dopey look on his face and then start imagining he was fighting in WWII. He often ended up in the corner wearing a dunce cap. I have been wracking my brain trying to remember his name.
I thought it was Ralph, or Gerald ... something very simple.
I can tell you this though, I have a book at home and I know he is in it. When I get home tonight I will look it up and post his name. Of course if I remember it during the course of the work day I will come back and post it.

Not sure if Sougouk is quite right.

This sounds more like Chuck Jones' series about a daydreaming boy, but I can't remember the name!

EGADS! I think I've found it!!!

The cartoon I think you are referring to is called "Boyhood Daze" and the characters name was "Ralph Phillips"

Here is the description I found:

Ralph gets sent to his room for breaking a window. There, he daydreams that he's a parent-saving jungle explorer, an alien-fighting jet ace and a convict. His fantasies include such lines as "My insurance will pay for the window and use whatever is left over to buy yourself a catcher's mitt" and "You are being pursued by Martians who all got A's in arithmetic."

I am not sure whether or not this in on DVD yet, but I will tell you this....I should have been working this past hour while I was trying to find this info

It was killing me!
:p

"From A to Z-Z-Z-Z" Oct 16, 1954 - little boy Ralph Phillips who uses every day school room events as jumping-off points for elaborate fantasies, from which he is rudely awakened each time by the teacher.

Dreams - he can fly. A math problem - the chalk board numbers come alive and laugh at him and he becomes a chalk figure and fights the numbers improvising weapons from the letters of the alphabet. Sent to mail a letter he becomes a Pony Express rider. A fish tank becomes the basis of a deep diving adventure where he saves a submarine by diving 700 fathoms without gear. Put in the dunce corner he becomes a boxer. When school is out, he becomes General MacArthur vowing "I shall return!".

Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings:

Summary and episode guide here including many screen caps.

NotaNumber is right on the money with his (or From A to Z-Z-Z-Z's rather) description of the Ralph Phillips cartoon when he's at school.

This WB cartoon was a favorite of my brother and I when we were younger, watching Looney Tunes on Nickelodion. I recently saw this replay on Boomerang, it was just last week actually. Such a beautifully animated, and well imagined cartoon, lots of fun.

Thanks guys! i hope these show up on DVD sometime. It makes sense they were WB cartoons (so Chuck Jones in style) but I almsot suspected they might be UPA or something.

I found that besides these two there were two other smade in the 50s for the US ARmy starring Ralph as a teen

YES! THAT'S IT!

Just couldn't remember the kid's name. And these WERE directed by Chuck Jones.

There were three:
From A to Z-Z-Z-Z (1953)
Boyhood Daze (1957)
Drafty, Isn't It? (1957)
