FACE OFF: Japanese Anime vs. American Animation

Ok, so this has gotten a big more confusing in recent years as more American animators have copied the style fo Japanese anime. But, in general, which do you prefer? Speed Racer or Bugs Bunny? The Lion King or Spirited Away?

I spent 3 years in Japan. Didn't like Anime the...still don't like it now. I wish that more American cartoons looked...well more like American Cartoon. I like my toons to look more like I'm used to. You know, with semi-normal eyes. Not the ones that fill half the face.

It's a bit too broad, really - i mean, I love both American produced, and Japanese produced animation - but each has a tremendous amount of crap as well.

I love animated work, regardless of where it comes from. I suppose there's more anime in my collection than American cartoons, so maybe that's my answer.

I also love all sorta of animated shows and movies... but if I had to make the choice it would be anime by a landslide.

I'm with videoworx - if it's good I like it. There is an awful lot of crap coming from both.

I voted for American, mainly because of the "golden age" stuff (mid 30's-mid 50's) coming from Fleischer, Disney, Warner Bros and MGM.

But is that due to the fact that American cartoons are much easier to see here on television in America than Anime. Therefore to see Anime you must buy or rent the dvds while American animation is everywhere.

They both have their plusses and minuses but my vote goes to the country which created Cowboy Bebop. The best animated series ever created.

I got a lot of free anime from working at Ventura, which was my first exposure to the genre. It showed me that if the story is good, the animation doesn't matter. InuYasha is the series that did that for me.

With that said, I still tend to favor American animation. If I were to put the American animated shows I like and the Japanese animated shows I like on a scale, it would tilt very quickly to the American side.

As a kid I'd have liked American animation better (Bugs, Daffy, Duck Tales, etc.), but as an adult I definitely like Japanese anime better (Bebop, RahXephon, Spirited Away, etc.)

I love the american animation of the 80's and early 90's. But, I feel sorry for children who are stuck with todays saturday morning cartoons. Japanese animation pisses me off when they don't draw backgrounds during action sequences (its just lazy if you ask me). I also can't stand how 90% of the dialouge is a 10 year old boy grunting and moaning while his humogous eyes shake. However, the japanese usually have some imaginative stories.
