How is Ghost in the Shell vol 1: Stand Alone Complex?

I noticed this in the Best Buy ad today. I'm curious as to how this new series (?) stands up to the movie. My main concern is with the animation. The movie kicked all kinds of ass with its art and sound. I don't want to shell out the cash and end up with Disney-esque straight to video garbage.

I don't know yet Ikea as I haven't seen it, but realize that there is two releases of this. a 3 discer (with one disc being the soundtrack CD) and the single discer. If you are going to buy, buy appropriately.

I noticed the three disc, which is what I'll get if I do buy it. Having the soundtrack sounds great, if it's anything like the movie soundtrack, it'll be spinning all the time.

The animation rivals the original for the most part. It's CG heavy, but it works rather well.

They changed it to more of a cop show, but it's quite fun.

But then again I've only watched the first five episodes a year ago or so.

The box set sounds like a rip, all it contains is an extra DVD of the same episodes, only with a DTS soundtrack. If you're only slipping four episodes a disc, there's no reason they couldn't have included the DTS soundtrack on the first disc.

However, the soundtrack is quite good, and comes in the box set.

I seen the first few episodes (via fansubs) and enjoyed them quite a bit. In fact, if I dare say it; it's better than the movie.

good stuff. If you liked the movie you'll probably like the series.

/and since no one is around and this thread hasn't been moved yet, I'll just go ahead and do that.

Great stuff, the series is highly recommended.
The 3 disc version is a waste of money to me,
essentially the second disc being identical to the first only with DTS this time,
and a 3rd CD soundtrack.......
blah.

There are a lot more volumes coming soon from Bandai
(cant remember exactly how many episodes were made)
next one being released in September

The series is more faithful in terms of characters to the original manga. It gets deeper into the world of Ghost In The Shell. More political even. Great great stuff. Now, if only they'd just hurry up with releasing everything NOW. season 2 is already underway in Japan.

....Or you could get the entire series on bootleg.

I read somewhere that there are 7 volumes for GITS: Standalone Complex. That would make sense if it were a standard season of 26 episodes.

I also read a rumor that the Cartoon Network will be airing the entire series this fall, as they have done for many series released by Bandai. If that's the case, I may hold off buying Vol. 1 until then. I did see a commercial of the DVD release on the Cartoon Network, and it does look pretty cool.

There are indeed 26 episodes. I've seen the fan-sub version of this and it is very good. I liked the Standalone Complex much better that the GITS movie, as the series is very close to the manga graphic novel.

For only $17.99, I will most definitely be picking this up at Best buy this week.

I really enjoyed (and still enjoy) the movie, and love the 2nd movie.

The series has taken awhile for me to warm up to it though.

The first volume had, IMHO, a couple of decent episodes, and the second volume was a bit lesser in quality. But the 3rd volume, has 4 absolutely wonderful episodes.

Also, has anybody else noticed how they really just keep layering in the j.d. salinger references, primarily from Catcher in the Rye and Nine Stories?

I love them doing this!

Aren't you forgetting about bitrate? 2 DTS tracks, 2 DD5.1 tracks, and 2 DD2.0 tracks would have been an enourmous strain, no matter how long the disc is.
