LION KING II: Simba's Pride

Don't know if anyone's interested in this one, but I just posted my customary exhaustive review for DVD Toons:
http://www.dvdtoons.com/reviews/329

While feeling little more than a re-tread of the first film, there is some enjoyment to be had in Lion King II and it's not a total failure.

The disc package pretty much is though, in that so much more (the Stand By Me short, extensive deleted scenes and the trailer) could have and should have been included.

Best of the bunch, and outshining the film for long-time Disney buffs, will be the main reason to get this: One By One, a charming short that shows Disney still has the magic when it lets its artists get on with doing what they do best.

What I can confirm though, is to squash those rumors that the main feature has been tinkered with. Apart from a digital presentation, this is the exact same feature (including several things that I DID wish they'd fixed) as appeared on the Limited Issue release in 1998.

Worth the upgrade for this new anamorphic transfer alone for people who have that disc, as well as the additional (skimpy) bonuses, including of course, the excellent One By One.

It's out Tuesday 31 August.

I'm skipping this one. It was an ok movie but I actually prefer the most recent Lion King, The Lion King 1 1/2 to Lion King 2 (neither as good as the original of course).
I'm happy with the version I have on DVD. No reason to double dip.

I'm with Damian on this one. I thought this movie was pretty bland and boring. I was hesitant on buying Lion King 1 1/2 because of Simba's Pride. Thankfully though 1 1/2 was a lot better then this movie even with a short run time and original Lion King scenes mixed in with the "new feature"

Looks like an OK dvd but i doubt it will make my dvd collection anytime soon.

I agree with you guys on the film - nothing oofensive but nothing outstanding either.

I do make a point of saying in the review that I think they held this off in case it hurt sales of LK 1.5. I mean, after getting "burned" on this one, how many people would have gone out and gotten that after watching this one? Not as many that's for sure!

Anyway...probably not worth upgrading for the movie, but if you are a long time, dedicated, die-hard Disney fan, you'll not want to miss out on the One By One short - an exceptional piece of art and a reminder of the very reasons we love Disney in the first place.

Perhaps a rental for that, or a wait till it's in the bargain bins, but that is certainly worth seeing for the animation alone.

I don't have the original DVD and my son enjoys this, so I'll be picking this one up. At least this one has a more original story than 1.5

But the beauty of 1.5 was the fact that it WASN"T meant to be an original story and ended up being just as funny as The Emporers New Groove. I admit I got 1.5 simply to round off the series but ended up laughing so hard during the movie it quickly rose to become one of my all time favorite Disney movies. Generally their direct-to-video sequals suck so hard (**cough** Cinderalla II **cough**) that I tend to avoid 'em. But I ended up being VERY happy with 1.5.
And my son LOOVES that movie as well.

I am just going to say it outload. The Lion King 1 1/2 might be the worst movie ever made. It is an unfunny, childish, redundent peice of garbage. I feel dumber after watching it. I never liked Disneys direct to video line but I never thought it would get this bad. First of all it puts Timon and Pumba in scenes they don't belong. Simbas birth was ruined. Now the animals are no longer bowing out of respect for there new king. They were bowing in the first movie because of Pumbas farts. This destroys the majesty of what was one of the most epic movie openings ever. Then it shows the time passing between Simbas birth and Can't wait to be King as one night. Really wow the wonders of hyperaging. Scenes like the elephant graveyard, Be Prepard, the wildebeast stampede all were serious classic moments dumbed down and ruined by a greedy studio who doesn't give a fuck about there classics. I watched the whole abomination not once did a laugh or enjoy myself in any way. Simbas Pride was definutly quite a bit below the first movie but at least it is a movie. The Lion King 1.5 is a joke. Whoever is responsible should never be allowed to touch another classic materpeice that was the original Lion King.

Childish? Uhm...you do realize it's a movie mostly aimed at kids right? They weren't aiming for a high-brow epic animated movie. Just some laughs for the kids and maybe the parents and I think they achieved that. I can easily seperate that movie and the original Lion King so it doesn't take anything away from the original movie.

I say childish because the first movie equally appealed to adults and kids. There is no way anyone over puberty can watch The Lion King 1.5 without sensing something is wrong.

As you say:

"The Lion King 1.5 is a joke"

...but obviously you didn't get it.

I'm a tad over puberty and enjoyed it completly.
But people watch movies for different reasons and take different things from each viewing. You're view is neither right nor wrong, just your view and I respect that.

If you consider the Lion King 1.5 a spoof then it has to be funny. It wasn't funny. Its probably jokes I would have laughed at when I was 3 but not now. Theres nothing worse then taking characters I have loved for a decade and turning them into a disaster.
