Frank Thomas, Disney Veteran Dies

http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movi....ap/index.html

Very sad to say one of Disney's best animators has passed away at the age of 92.

With it being in this forum, many people may not see it because they don't come here. However, this man's passing is really the end of a life that has defined alot of the images we remember from animation. True, while they may be skewd to Disney only, they are ones we will never forget. I found this list on HTF:

The Seven Dwarfs weeping over the fallen princess' body in 1937's "Snow White."
The little wooden boy capering at Stromboli's puppet theater in 1940's "Pinocchio"
Thumper teaching the young prince to ice skate in 1942's "Bambi."
The panicked school teacher trying to escape the Headless Horseman in 1949's "The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad."
The cold & scheming stepmother, Lady Tremaine, in 1950's "Cinderella."
The Queen of Heart's explosive appearance in 1951's "Alice in Wonderland."
Captain Hook's elegantly evil performance in 1953's "Peter Pan."
The dog's romantic dinner at Tony's in 1955's "Lady and the Tramp."
Flora, Fauna & Merriweather -- the fussy old fairies in 1959's "Sleeping Beauty."
Dick Van Dyke dancing with those penguins in 1964's "Mary Poppins."
Baloo struggling to tell Mowgli that he has to leave the forest in 1967's "The Jungle Book."

That's what I meant when they started this one up (ahh, well, I'm over it now, don't get me started)!

We just posted Disney's official statement at Animated News. A sad, sad, day:

A sad day indeed.

For anyone who hasn't seen the documentary "Frank & Ollie" I highly recommend that you do so, for not only will you be in awe of their talents but in awe of that energy they carried with them long into their later years. Most people lose that sparkle in their eyes before they even become adults but it never faded from either Frank nor Ollie. They inspired many & touched us all... RIP Frank.

It just doesn't make sense. It's not like animation topics were overrunning General Software, and why the need to make distinctions between animation and live-action? It'd be like separating discussions into DVDs for Films that Use CGI Effects and DVDs for Films That Don't.

But that's not the topic at hand. Frank Thomas had a great career, and I'm glad he lived a long, full life, staying apparently pretty spirited up through the end. He'll be missed, but his contributions to animation will keep him alive.

And don't forget those books!

The Illusion Of Life is still THE animation bible. Also worth picking up the 1995 doc Frank And Ollie, which just shows simply why Frank will be so missed by those who knew him closely.
