Disney's HOME ON THE RANGE
Disney's last - for now - traditionally animated film comes to disc, and I found it heaps of fun:
http://www.dvdtoons.com/reviews/334 Like the filmmakers suggest on the not-at-all-advertised AUDIO COMMENTARY, their intention was simply to "have fun" with the film to get away from the "pretentious" features the Studio had been putting out. They admit they have no big moral message to push, and just wanted to create a feature in the old-style of the cartoon shorts. I'd recommend all that didn't catch its theatrical run not to be put off by the PG rating, and the udder joke that apparently warranted the film that tag will go over kids' heads, leaving the rest of the film a simple, but energetic ride that plays for laughs and mostly scores big. Disney Animation WILL come back someday, but in the meantime I'm kind of glad that we went out with a laugh as opposed to some "worthy epic". HOTR belongs in that somewhat sub-classic category along with The AristoCats, Robin Hood and The Emperor's New Groove - solid films that keep the ball rolling before the "next big thing". What exactly that will be, we will have to wait and see... As for now, HOTR offers comedy fare that's still tons better than many other animated films out there (including some of Disney's own). It's out today (September 14)...anyone brought it "Home" yet? ![]()

Yup, I've got it, and I agree with most of what you said. I hope the DVD helps it find its audience, as it's an enormously fun picture that will give a lot of laughs to a lot of people. It's also very emotional at times (Will the Sun Ever Shine Again" sequence and song, in perticular), and the songs are great. All animation fans had a duty to check this one out in theaters and convince Disney to keep on with traditional work. That didn't happen, really, but all those who did see it (myself included, thankyouverymuch) will know how great it is, and all others who didn't should seek it out NOW.
