Superman: Brainiac Attacks is pretty lame

As a major fan of Superman: The Animated Series, Brainiac Attacks is a crushing disappointment. Yeah, it's nice to hear Tim Daly as Supes again, but who's bright idea was it to re-cast so many key supporting roles? Powers Boothe is AWFUL as Lex Luthor. Lance Henriksen is AWFUL as Brainiac. Whoever is playing Mercy is AWFUL (and why is she inexplicably blonde in this? ). The dialogue is dreadful, undercutting the performances even of Daly and the Dana Delaney, who's usually dynamic in the role of Lois Lane but never gets out of first gear in this one. Really, this is the worst movie off-shoot of a Superman/Batman series yet (even Mystery Of The Batwoman was better). It was nice to see Lois in that little black dress during the dinner scene, though.

From what I've read around the 'net, this really isn't an off-shoot of the animated series. It was written by those responsible for "The Batman", and uses the TAS designs only because they were in a hurry to get it out in time for "Superman Returns".

It's definitely supposed to be in the same continiuity as S:TAS, though, even if it's completely nonsensical that Brainiac acts as if he's never met Lex before. It's just a shame that it's such a shoddy rush-job, though, as it would have been nice to have a really thoughtful "bridge" between TAS and Justice League.

Wow...kinda wish I didn't order it from Amazon yesterday. Oh well, maybe now my low expectations will make me like it more than I would have.

Thanks for the heads up, Jack.

Indeed. You subtract the ticket from the price of the DVD and you're out only about five bucks (or only slightly more than a rental). Then, once you realize how stinky it is, you can sell it and actually make money off the investment.

I'm gonna avoid writing a long review (More like a list of complaints in this case) for this DVD, I'll just quickly summarize:

Lex Luthor acts like The Joker

Brainiac acts like something out of a bad Power Rangers episode.

The plot is absolutely dreadful and unimaginative, and ignores the genius writing of Justice League and the other DCAU shows, which is a crime not to dissimilair to prostitution.

Overall Score: 4/10
