Voltron!!! At last!!!

After posting about it in my wishlist, I found this website. Yes it's really happening; Voltron is coming to DVD! There is a lot of exciting information on the website. (lot's of extras, 5.1 sound) I suggest you read everything because they provide some good details on the different masters they found and all sorts of other things.

I for one can't wait for this.

However there is this one small thing... In this George Lucas world of - if it ain't broke, break it - they redesigned the Voltron logo, and in my opinion for the worse. A small thing to complain about? Maybe... but a small thing that should have been left alone. I'd like to know what most of you think about the logo change. It's an 80s show. It didn't need an 06 logo.

Check it...

From the looks of the site they are releasing only the Lions version of Voltron, or they are doing the Lions first because that was the popular one here in the US. but the sets sound pretty good. 8 3 disk sets.

As far as changing the logo? They just made the sword (the T) bigger and more detailed. Theres no change to the show, I wouldn't say the shows broken. I think just the oppisite, it is an 80s show if they just change the logo to attract more attention to the product on the shelf go for it.

I bought it Tuesday. What I can tell you now is that I continue to be bitten by the quality control bug. I had to search through many to find (metal) case that wasn't bent or dinged, or chipped. I got mine to find a tiny chip anyway. (not the end of the world) open it and find some of the glossy inner booklet torn away (like when you put a piece of tape on something and rip it away. Inspect the DVDs and find a few scuffs and scratches (something I am VERY TIRED OF!) But low and behold silly me... maybe I should have keep it. I return it for another one... get home and it is scratched FAR WORSE than the first set. So now (looking like an idiot, I have to go to Best Buy again and make another exchange) Aright!!!

Going on... the second set is missing a catalog that was in the first set. So that sucks to. The glossy cardboard case that holds the DVDs is a somewhat tight fit in the metal Lion case, tight enough to make you bend the edges of the cardboard when you put it in or remove it. I am anal so all this irritates me.

People need to get back to freaking quality control. How are these getting scratched any way? I am assuming a machine is dropping them and someone in the factory puts them right back on the line.

I finally curbed my anger enough to give disc one a spin for about 45 minutes. I was very please with what I saw. Colors are nice and bright. The show doesn't look as horribly old as it is. Yes there is some snap crackle and static, but it is never painfully constant or bothersome. I'm sure it is impossible to get rid of all of it, especially when you read how this set was put together. Audio is about the same as the original, no sense of enhancement here. But that is fine with me for some reason. I don't really need this show to be in 5.1 with killer deep bass. Just getting my childhood blast back is fun enough.

So all and all (when I get a set with minimal scratches) I will call this a good buy.

All of my dvd problems (and I mean ALL of them) have been from Best Buy. (even though it's not their fault)

Space Above And Beyond - 3 returns
Voltron - 3 returns
LOTR Fellowship - 2 returns

Wooohoo! Got my Blue Lion tin yesterday from Best Buy. No dings, no scratches, no damaged disks of any sort. It pays to shop at brick and mortar stores and pick the merchandise up and shake it a bit.

So what are the extras on this Voltron, Vol1?

They repeatedly mention "putting as much extra stuff on these discs as we can", but not much detailed info except for character sketches. (yawn)

From Animeondvd.com

Quote:
The extras in this collection are packed with some great features. Disc three contains only three full episodes as opposed to the six episodes contained on each of the previous discs. This alone, gives you an idea as to how much extra stuff is piled onto the third disc. For starters, there are two pilot episodes of the very first Voltron episode, which gives the viewer an insight into what Voltron looked like in its early renditions. One of the most interesting aspects of the disc is the interview with the producers and creators of Voltron. A half hour segment explains how Voltron came to be and what it took to make this animated classic possible. I guess I am naïve, but it’s amazing to see how much marketing was pumped into the initial launch of Voltron. From toys, books, clothes, etc... it is no wonder why Voltron along, with many others (i.e. GI-Joe, Transformers, etc...) became instant hits with those who grew up in the 80’s. There is also a short clip on the remastering endeavor taken to remaster Voltron. To round out the extras, the humorous parody of “You Got Served” as seen in the episode “You Got Robo Served” on Cartoon Network’s Robot Chicken is available for your viewing pleasure.
Although I haven't started watching the set yet the booklet that comes with the original air dates and plot summaries has a small break down of what went into the reconstruction of the elements to geth the video cleaned up. Sound like they did quite a bit.
