Secret of NIMH SE in June?!

From the Toon Zone...

"Secret of NIMH" Special Edition and High-Definition DVDs on the Way

By Ace the Bathound

A posting on Don Bluth's website states that The Secret of NIMH has just been remastered for HD DVD (see note dated Jan 17, 2007), and that they are hoping that it will be available by June or July 2007. The comment also states, "We're told that the new color master will be made available at full screen 1:1.33 (as it was shot), 1:1.85 letterbox (as it was projected in theaters in 1982)and 16X9 HD," and that producer/director commentary and an on-camera interview DVD extras are finished and should be on the final product.

And Shannen Doherty. And one of the inbetween artists on the picture was future Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce W. Timm.

According to the DVD Journal, June 19th is the release date of the NIMH SE, which will be a 2-disc set.

Well, just watched the film today, and the new widescreen transfer is quite good. Most of the print defects and cel dirt have been scrubbed away, and the transfer is quite lovely. The Bluth/Goldman commentary is excellent, although it would have been interesting if they got into their split with Disney. However...why is this a 2-disc set? The second disc only contains a 15-minute featurette and some crappy kiddie games. They couldn't fit that one the first disc?

Anyways, it's the film that counts. Now we just need some better cover art...

I agree that the first disc of the NIMH SE is fantastic. I'm also completely stunned by the 2nd disc. Free promo discs at stores like CC & BB have more content. ONE featurette & 5 set top kiddie games. Other Family Fun Editions like Ferngully & Anastasia gave us lots of bonus content including Bartok (a whole movie as a bonus feature). And for this they put a featurette. What a waste of a disc.

Nice to see I can actually discuss this film here without getting laughed at.

Indeed. Why didn't they include Bluth's entire Banjo The Woodpile Cat short? That would have been a wonderful extra, kind of like Tim Burton's Vincent and Frankenweenie on the Nightmare Before Christmas DVD. Where's the still-frame archive of storyboards, character designs, background paintings, ect.? Where's the film's trailer, which was on the original DVD? Do even kids like those idiotic set-top "games"? And the insert...looked like a placemat from a fucking fast food restaurant. The sad thing is, the featurette was very good, it just went by way too fast. I wanted to see more home movies, more live-action reference footage, more mention of the film's voice cast (I did like the still of young Shannen Doherty), but it was over practically before it started. Plus, the cover artwork sucked ass. I'm still waiting for someone to create a cool alternate cover.

Oh well, it's the movie that counts, but...*sigh*

You're so right about that insert. Last time I saw something that looked like that I was ordering the Grand Slam breakfast at Denny's. At least we finally got Bluth's first solo classic & in both wide & full. I watched it both ways on my bigscreen & they're great. I gotta keep saying "it's the movie that counts" too. At least it was a very low priced two disc set even though the second disc is so lame.

Thank goodness I held onto the 8-page insert from the original DVD when I sold it months ago. Yeah, it was still kinda aimed at the kiddies, but at least it looked classy, and had the chapter titles.

Seriously, we need someone to create a new cover art for this.
